Why It’s Almost Impossible to Drive a Golf Ball 450 Yards (ft. Dustin Johnson) | WIRED
Really great video 👍
Love ur channel dude
Hey rick
I am not sure if he answered the question why it is almost impossible to drive more than 450 yards. In the beginning of this video, it seemed like he was gonna prove it mathematically using physics (laws and equations of motion, friction, swing speed, launch angle, v-notch impact test, physical strength etc etc in addition to just the COR .)
Nice video Ricky boy
You only said that cause they cut the corn syrup ball. I know you Shielsy. Hahahahaha top shelf good man

Besides the mechanical limits, there is also an exponential increase in drag on a golf ball the faster it travels
BROOKSY!!!!
until it breaks the sound barrier
@@edge21str that is not the limit to drag. It is quadratic not exponential and it does not care about the sound barrier
@@Julian79.. I was just trying to make a joke and I'm not too versed on the subject, but doesn't drag coefficient decrease as speed increases past mach 1?
@@edge21str yes you are totally right, there is a sharp increase in the drag coefficiwnt at mach 1 and it decreases with higher speeds again. I did not know that, apperently the compressibility of air is the reason. Thanks and sorry for then false information

Agreed, this entire serious is a joke. It's entertaining, but a joke nonetheless.
Totally disagree. It was really interesting. I loved it.
I think the series is interesting. In some cases gear does limit performance, such as in golf. So this exact episode is perhaps not "impossible enough", but rather limited to 450 yards. Others have serious physiological barriers that can be hard or impossible to breach.
Think they should look up world long drive tour before making videos like this
Lol no, that won’t happen. Average tour driving distance has only increased around 13 yards in the past 20 years, and because of the COR limits, it will likely remain stagnant. Then there’s the long drive champions (who rarely play any tour events, as they just don’t have the overall skills). They would have to shorten their drivers to 48” or under, as that’s the max allowed on tour, which would bring their distances down even more. Long story short, averages will stay around ~ 300-310 unless the rules change.

Carry distance is surely a better metric than total distance, but you still have to account for wind speed and height difference between start and land positions. That's why carry can vary quite a lot.

Lololol. Nice.
This. Wish at the end they broke every rule with club/ball to get maximum distance.
Mike Hoke Austin in the 1974 U.S. National Senior Open hit a 515-yard drive.
The tee shot is listed in the Guinness Book of Sports Records as the longest hit in competition. More amazing, he used a 41" Steel shafted club with a Persimmon Head, and a Titleist Balata Ball.
Oh, and one other thing, Mike Austin was 64 when he crushed his record drive.
He was actually 59, Steve Pratt has the census records that prove this. Remove the altitude and the tailwind and the drive was 480 yards.
@@WeaverJ576 even so, still an incredibly long drive

If the shot is completely uncontrolled then it will be shorter than if it is even marginally under control.
John used to tell his caddy that when he was going to swing shout out, CRUSH it John.
Excellent !! well done, informative, comprehensive treatment. Thank you!!

It's all about swing arc,and timing of hands, arms, hips, legs and shoulders at impact to generate club head speed.the longer the arms, the longer the shaft combined with swing timing that produce swing speed.
and you have to hit the ball with a club head traveling 120mph such that the sweet spot on the face of the club (about the size of a pin point) makes contact with the ball with the face of the club closing relative to its arc such that when the ball leaves the club face it is going to an area 320 yards away that is only 30 yards wide - good luck everybody

Mike Austin a mountain of a man holds the record for the longest drive in professional competition. Mike 's record is 515 yards and was done at the National Seniors Open, what is now the Senior Open and Mike was 64 years old at the time, he struck the shot with a 35 MPH tail wind and was at about 2,000 feet above sea level and he was using a Persimmon Driver with a steel shaft . Mike as I said was a very big man with massive hands and he was naturally strong as an ox, an ex WWII fighter pilot and a bare fisted brawler in his early days Mike was a true student of the game and is most likely the father of what is now the Long Drive Championships which are gaining in popularity on ESPN. Mike taught some of the game longest hitters back when Persimmon drivers were still used and 350 yards back then was a massive hit. Mike's record setting drive in a professional event still stands to this day as the mark the games current biggest hitters all chase, I am sure one will find the conditions right some day as Mike did, but having met this very special man personally I hope the record stands for a long time to come, Mike is no longer with us but his record stands as a testament to his teaching style that used the hips in a bell like motion coupled with the leverage of the ground to just pound the ball.

How it is almost impossible to generate 10 000 rotations per minute with a tennis racket
The game was better back in the woods and forged iron days. Much harder. Par was a good score on all the holes. A 400 yard hole wasn't a driver wedge; reaching a par 5 in two wasn't automatic. When I got the new equipment I gained 50 yards on my drives. It was fun at first, but then as I started playing all the old courses I'd enjoyed, I was practically driving all the shorter par 4s. It felt cheap. It cheapened the game. But the genie's out of the bottle now....but everyone's who's so wowed by these distances probably never touched those old clubs. They were a real challenge, but learning the nuances was an art. It was a better game. And it was especially better when people walked and carried their bags. Old school guy here.....
you will not see the USGA lift restrictions because that would antiquate countless historic golf courses
I bought Jack Nicklaus's "Golf my way" when it first came out in the 70's. He said the average tour player drive was 248 yards. Technology changed that. It's not the golfer.
Don Johnson in Tin Cup hit it about 700 yards with a 7 iron.
He hit it down the fuckin' road....😂

The best way to look at the golfers swing, is to liken it to a watch spring. Drawing to club back is tightening the spring and hitting the ball is the release of the spring or unwinding the spring.
"Remember the ultimate goal is to get to the hole"... Don't worry. This objective is in my head every day.
i can hit it maybe 250. how these guys are hitting it 400 is insane to me.
Not gonna lie, the golf ball expert looks exactly like his profession.
Back in the day people said it was almost impossible to get 300 but look now as the clubs advance we will hit further and people will start to make longer holes

Players have been finding ways to hit the ball farther? Yeah, by finding Pro V1s in their bags.
Matt Brown sell out😂
Well that's just false
What the dimples do is make the ball fly and be able to be controlled by the player. If you hit a ball without dimples you will mostly hit knuckle balls with crazy movement.
Who's here to see Dustin Johnson's amazing swing?
Nicholas Johnson is a great player but with his talent and only have 1 major is ridiculous. He folds everytime hes in contention on sunday in majors. He usually is right there makes a run gets close or leads at some point then collapses. Im sure he dosent care because these guys make sooo much money but he should of had at least 5 or 6 by now with his talent.
@@jeffreyval9665 trust me
He cares. A lot. 50 million net worth is a lot. 200 million is a lot more. Lol
The longest hitters aren't really any longer other than technological changes.
Jack Nicklaus never had clubhead speed measured until he was 58. At 58, he still had 118 miles an hour of clubhead speed. Dustin averages something like 121 or so, and once in a great while gets above 125. I doubt Jack would've had any trouble matching him.
the rest of the guys out there generally work with the same basic swing, which is definitely different than Jack's era.
Before Jack, I'd bet Sam Snead had the ability (if he'd have had lighter clubs that could tolerate it) to generate similar swing speeds. The balls and the clubs couldn't really take advantage of it.
Deja vu.

Why it’s almost impossible to get a 17 in a round of golf
That is impossible
All the regulations seem pretty stupid. Let players and equipment be excellent and exceed what has come before. Golf is already a game of tedious perfectionism, we need some crazy hero shots to be possible to make it interesting!
The fact that dimples were created to make ball flight better, yet certain dimple patterns like the Polara are banned because they make the flight *too* good is just especially silly.
