Luckily, marine photography is something you can always start yourself! All you need is a camera 😜. But i agree, it’s people like Paul Nicklen that started my love for marine biology and the incredible things you can do in this field.
:) Glad you share a love of the ocean. For me there’s really no other way to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ocean than to take care of a small piece of it on a daily basis. That’s why I have decided to become a reef tank hobbyist. You may swim with fish and ocean animals while diving or snorkeling or doing research on them up close, but none is as magical as having them live for years, even decades under none other than your own care and regard for their environment. I am deeply upset that there are activist groups trying to end the saltwater hobby. If possible I would only buy Captive bred fish and corals (which unfortunately is far from a reality currently, save for a select number of species), but ending the saltwater hobby altogether would mean losing a vital source of inspiration for future generations in their appreciation of God’s design when He created the oceans of the world. Not to mention with the rate that our coral reefs are dying due to global warming, some species may only exist in captivity as a result of captive breeding efforts a few decades down the line. We may even assist marine biologists by growing corals and raising fish to give back to the oceans (of course we’ll keep some to ourselves in our tanks :)). We can be the staunchest allies of marine biologists and I really believe that even the marine biologist experience is not complete without getting into the hobby side of things. :) My deepest disrespect for these brain dead conservation groups and the politicians who back them unconditionally. If they really think they can act in the better interests of these beautiful and amazing marine animals, they should prove that by taking care of a reef tank. I bet 90% of them will think it’s too difficult after only a week. If they have not personally experienced what it takes to maintain such fragile ecosystems yet try to attack the people who can AKA us, they’re in no position to do what’s “best” for these animals. Same with their attitude towards cats and dogs really. I’d not hesitate to use brutal tactics to crush them if I ever become a governor or even the president. I’d treat them as a modern day KKK, domestic terrorist groups and use every tool in my playbook to track down their leaders one by one and rip their organizational abilities to shreds.

However, one of the biggest issues I've been worried about in pursuing this career is the whole independency thing. Why did you give up becoming a veterinarian? I just graduated earlier this year, but I've been thinking for a while now about going back to school to study to become a marine veterinarian because working with marine animals has always been a dream
I gave up becoming a marine veterinarian because I realized I really wasn't all that interested in animal health and medicine. I'm far more interested in ecology and environmental advocacy. Although you can definitely incorporate both of these into the life of a marine veterinary position, I didn't want those interests to come second to the primary role of animal health. The road is TOUGH for marine veterinarians, but the persistent and dedicated do succeed! Also, once you actually receive your DVM, you can do all kinds of things! Even if you don't end up finding a position to work with aquatic animals. One of the great benefits of pursuing veterinary science is that DVMs will always have a job.
@@oceanscholar You're reply was very insightful, thank you. I have a lot of thinking ahead in terms of what I'd like to do in the future, but one things for sure is that I want to work with marine life. Appreciate the work you're doing educating and informing people about marine bio as well as the careers around it :)
I thought that I wanted to study food engineering because it involves science. But when I found out about marine biology, I think that I may change my career path.
I'm in the tail end of my 3rd year of my bachelor's, and people are beginning to ask me what career I'll have, what my plan for grad school is, where I'm going to live and work (my uni is ~4500km away from home), etc. Honestly I didn't think I'd get this far cuz I *sucked* at math and chem in both high school and my 1st year so I'm lowkey freaking out lol
Congratulations on making it so far! It just goes to show that you can always improve when you’re passionate about something. I’m curious on how you’re doing now career/school wise?
I'm currently having the *worst* identity crisis ever. I always wanted to be a marine biologist, I really love science but I'm not very good at math or chemistry.. still on 11th grade but very nervous about what I'm going to do after high school..
After graduating from with my bachelors in marketing, I thought whether or not I made the right choice. Part of me believes I made the wrong choice and should’ve gone with something involved around my interest, sea life. Looking at it now, I don’t have the scientific or mathematical knowledge to succeed in that field. But my love for sea life pushed me to be a Fishing RUclipsr. Now my knowledge from my marketing degree is helping me to improve my channel. Hoping for the best.👍🙏
Oh my gosh me too!!! Although I’m only 12 I have been in love with sharks for a long time and my passion for sharks actually came from shark movies that make sharks out to be a scary species believe it or not. The more I saw sharks as monsters the more I wanted to prove people who think they are wrong!
@@magggmae Yes! I’m just scared I won’t be good enough to pursue that since science and math are my worst subjects. But I’m really pushing myself to learn and study Biology chemistry physics geography and mathematics.

U are adorable. I wanted to be a marine biologist BUT I could not get past math class in college and I also have anxiety and depression and depression that keeps me from living a life with holding down a job
Hi there! I am currently an AS student and am aspiring to become a Marine Biologist. Before getting admitted into uni I wanted to learn more about the field and take up extracurricular activities related to marine bio. Now, the problem is there are no aquariums or zoos nearby where I live where I could look for volunteering opportunities. Currently, I am just doing a Coursera Course on Large Marine Ecosystems. What kind of further ONLINE activities can I part take in and what other resources are available which will help me out in the long run? (other topics I am particularly interested in - ocean conservation and plastic pollution)
If you can, keep taking online courses; watch documentaries, RUclips videos, etc. You can also add in books or textbooks if a certain topic interests you. See if you can join or volunteer in an organization that lets you do online work for them. You could even start something in your local area, whether it's advocacy, education, policies or mini projects. Best of luck.
My main goal is dolphin trainer, I've always loved and felt a connection to dolphins, i recently swam with them in the Florida Keys! (Thats when i finally decided to make it my career!)
That's great Cecelia! Dolphins provided me with one of the most resonating experiences I've ever had swimming with them in the wild in Honduras. They deserve more awareness and protection.
Bit of disclaimer, if you actually end up going for marine Biology with a focus on marine mammals, it's is most likely that you're gonna end up being anti training/captivity and against sea world institutions. Has hapoened to a lot of people I know, mostly because of how cruel things like dolphin training can be.
Hey fellow Ocean explorer :) We're also doing a web series on the bizarre behaviors, amazing animals and fantastic features on our shores. Great to see others making content in this space! Keep it up!
Thank you for this video. I am currently in 8th grade looking forward to learning chemistry, biology and marine biology. But besides that point, thanks for this vid because i was looking for help to get a head start on finding jobs and this helped. But one question, can i be a labratory assistant and a aquatic veterinarian at the same time?
Amazing and super helpful video! I’m really interested in the data processing part of the research technician position. Roughly what does the salary and work schedule look like?
I went to Florida State University! I made a video about this titled "Life as a Marine Biology Major" if you were interested. I've been attempting to create a video about top programs for marine biology, but realized it's quite a complex subject! I'll likely post one eventually once I've done enough research.
Our fish store has a aquatic veterinarian Any fish or coral this isn’t doing too well you can bring it back for no charge and they will help it get better
I know I wanna be a surgeon but I also want to live my life a little because I enjoy the ocean...which major will allow me to swim with sea life the most in college???

I'm glad you found it useful! I'm not entirely sure what the most common career out of these would be, but I would think that one of the most common and popular career options of the ones I mentioned would be a school teacher!

Are the job opportunities for marine biology good or you have to get a PhD to get the good jobs because when I was a kid I always wanted to take care of sea animals. But, now I don’t know. I’m trying to protect my financial state for the future and I’m not the type to take risk just because it’s my dream.
I don’t know how much this helps, but from what I gather a PhD means that you will be leading the research projects, a master degree means you will usually be a leader within the project, and a bachelors degree can get you to be the worker within the project (salaries vary depending on degree, job, and location) I know it is a very competitive field with more people competing for jobs than jobs. If you are truly passionate, I’m confidant you’ll find a field that’s right for you. Hope this helped a little!
Of course! I’m glad you found this information useful! Back when I was an early undergrad I wish I knew more about the hundreds of different job opportunities out there for someone interested in marine science.
what gcses would i have to get and what a-levels would i need to take a get to be able to get into a university that does marine biology, do i need 9 or can i still be a marine biologist with 6 and 7s im 14 and just started my gcses and idk what i need to be able to peruse marine biology
Hey sir I have a question I want to get into marine biology but I'm still nit sure where I want to do marine research and their making us pick career paths next year any advice?
Thank you so much! Do you have college suggestions for someone looking to do Wildlife and Fisheries? I’m in the middle of Nebraska, not too fantastic for marine biology
I'm not entirely certain what I might suggest for Wildlife & Fisheries, but I would do a search for the top programs for biology and environmental science!
I've always like studying about different animals in the ocean, but never got the chance to actually do Hands on like seeing dolphins and holding other animals
I’m 13 and want to become a marine biologist who is like diving or finding new species it’s just because I love the ocean it feels like my home I swim a lot (I’m an regional swimming middle-sex region)and I’m good at science do you have any idea for what I should do
I wish I could tell you I have a number but I definitely don’t have one! The role “marine scientist” is so broad and encompasses so many roles at so many different types of organizations. Some work 50+ hours a week and some work way less. It does seem however that for smaller organizations in developing countries without a whole lot of regulation on overtime, that those types of jobs tend to push closer to 50+. Although, some people don’t mind that because they love the lifestyle.
You might be surprised to know some marine biologists don't ever step foot in the water! Many marine biologists work strictly from their computer or the lab.
im DYING to study something related to the ocean ive been obsessed with it since i was little after watching octonauts and Spongebob and jaws 🥹🥹 i love biology and literally anything related to marine life 🐳🦈
Me too I have been lost for a while as to what I want to do but I really feel this is for me, I love fish, the ocean, the mystery of it and the fact there are always new species to be discovered!
I'm currently studying animal management at college but I want to know how I can help my career path, this video helped so much thank you!. Is there a specific job for helping rescue marine mammals ?
There definitely is somewhere in the world! I would say your best bet for helping your career path is beginning to locate and talk to professionals in your desired field. See if you can find marine mammal rescuers near you and see if you can talk to them or shadow them! That experience will help you immensely in learning about the career and having something to put on your resume related to it.
If the goal is to eventually study animal science/behavior, math isn't usually a HUGE portion of the career, except for statistics. Statistics are incredibly important for animal science and something you should definitely work hard to understand!
Is UK good for marine biology?am from India..am looking forward to study marine biology in UK..what is your opinion about that ?..and also how can I contact you?
I was always intrested in zoology and marine biology but had to get my graduation in computer science Fuck i hate it. Wish i could switch the profession no matter how dangerous ocean would be. I always had a dream of swimming with bowhead whales.
If you're looking to become a "deep sea SCUBA diver" you should definitely look into technical (TEC) diving courses, which will teach you how to dive deeper and for longer. If you're looking to begin a course I would do a google search and a bit of your own research to find a dive shop near you that offers TEC. There are no degrees that you need to begin this certification, but you will need extensive diving experience. I would find a shop and talk to an instructor to get more info!
I would absolutely love to be a marine biologist. However, I cannot swim and would prefer working in labs where I can do research. Do you have any advice on how to go from here?
Being a marine biologist doesn't require you to know how to swim.. lots of scientists doesn't even dive only spent the rest of their careers in lab, writing, and giving lectures
Can someone please give me tips on how to get a scholarship after I'm done with A levels.. Along with that I still have to do my year 12 so I'd like to know some things I can do right now?

It´is the most useful video that I have found by far!! I am a marine biology student in Peru and I'm looking for opportunities or jobs, I think I'm on time. I don't want a single job for the rest of my life!
All the love from Peru.
PD: Sorry for my bad English skills hehe
Your English is great! And I’m glad you found it useful. Best of luck on your job search!
I’m very thankful for this video I’ve been doing a lot of research even tho I’m only 13 and I still have A LOT of time to Decide but I think I’ve chosen one that would suit me
I just finished school and now I'm thinking of pursuing this field. I'll let you know wassup in 4 years lol
After 9,000 views still no one has mentioned the squirrels 😂
I did
Omg this is amazing I'm picking my GCSEs next year and was thinking of jobs this seems amazing!!! Only thing is I live in the uk and my family is rlly broke hope I can still do it tho!! Xxxx
I'm so glad you found it useful! Best of luck!
I have similar reasons for not pursuing veterinary medicine
Greta info for a guy just starting out in the marine biology field!! Thanks so much!
Extremely useful!! Keep up with your work!! 👍👍👍
I'm currently having the *worst* identity crisis ever. I always wanted to be a marine biologist, I really love science but I'm not very good at math or chemistry.. still on 11th grade but very nervous about what I'm going to do after high school..
Hi I'm a marine biologist you can be a chemical oceanologist or a marine biologist with a chem minor or double major it's up to you all is not lost
Don’t throw away your passion based solely off your current capabilities. Adaptability is the difference between failure and success in STEM
OMG THIS IS MY DREAM I WANT TO BE A DIVEE AS A MARINE BIOLOGIST HOLY SHIT
After graduating from with my bachelors in marketing, I thought whether or not I made the right choice. Part of me believes I made the wrong choice and should’ve gone with something involved around my interest, sea life. Looking at it now, I don’t have the scientific or mathematical knowledge to succeed in that field. But my love for sea life pushed me to be a Fishing RUclipsr. Now my knowledge from my marketing degree is helping me to improve my channel. Hoping for the best.👍🙏
I just wanna help the sharks and swim with them!
Oh my gosh me too!!! Although I’m only 12 I have been in love with sharks for a long time and my passion for sharks actually came from shark movies that make sharks out to be a scary species believe it or not. The more I saw sharks as monsters the more I wanted to prove people who think they are wrong!
@@Natalie-ft9cs exactly!!! I’m glad you also see what I see!
@@magggmae Yes! I’m just scared I won’t be good enough to pursue that since science and math are my worst subjects. But I’m really pushing myself to learn and study Biology chemistry physics geography and mathematics.
@@Natalie-ft9cs I’m going to go to school to become a surgeon but I do want to be able to help them in any way I can :)
hey! I’m 14 and I’ve been surtified in diving since I was 10. I got surtified in Belize, and I’ve been really interested in marine biology. I’m also going on a diving trip in January in Honduras acually!
certified?
I’ve been interest in Marine Veterinarian since 9th grade of high school. About to transfer to university to get masters then PHD. It’s a hard study but going to be my dream.
Wow! I'm actually just starting university to study marine bio as I want to be a marine vet as well, any advice from your experience so far?
I've been wanting to be a marine biologist since I was 5 and I still want to be one I will go to college for it and hopefully I will become one it sounds so interesting
That's awesome!
Don’t let boring or difficult courses push you away from that joy
So glad to hear you talked about Utila!
U are adorable.
I wanted to be a marine biologist BUT I could not get past math class in college and I also have anxiety and depression and depression that keeps me from living a life with holding down a job
could you make a video for people who want to work with marine life but are no good at math lol.
I’ll work on it! Luckily most of marine biology isn’t tooo math intensive 😜
Thank you for your informative discussion about marine biology.
Please make a video on Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management.
I loved this video. It was very informative. I am interested in this field, but google was a maze. RUclips always has what I need. 🎉
I'm not sure! I would look into similar work titles and see what the position description entails.
i personally don't mind writing reports etc, because i really want to help the earth. I can't wait for this to be my future
What college did you go to and can you make a video of the top marine biology programs??
I went to Florida State University! I made a video about this titled "Life as a Marine Biology Major" if you were interested.
I've been attempting to create a video about top programs for marine biology, but realized it's quite a complex subject! I'll likely post one eventually once I've done enough research.
my dream is to become a marine biologist and a marine veterinarian
That’s awesome!
Our fish store has a aquatic veterinarian Any fish or coral this isn’t doing too well you can bring it back for no charge and they will help it get better
That's so cool!
Very helpful thank you!
As an aquatic veterinarian you also get to work in a lab and do research right ?
i accidentaly put it on 2x speed but i still puased it on the right one on accident
I'm studied Marine Biology. It's fun to know about every species in the Ocean.. heheh but I love to study about marine plankton
I know I wanna be a surgeon but I also want to live my life a little because I enjoy the ocean...which major will allow me to swim with sea life the most in college???
Definitely a dive instructor or divemaster!
marine veterinarians do surgeries and are involved in rehabilitating animals??
Loved the video. But i wanna know whether i will get a job as a marine biologist after pursuing Msc in marine biology?? Or I'll have to complete my specialisation course in the same?
I want to be a marine biologist..I will definitely achieve it
I'm interested in the first one you named like the dive teacher job and a marine photographer
Hey been trying to get more info of what exactly does a marine biologist does and what it is and this video helped me a lot because now I know that there is multiple choices for me to do but my question is what is the most common career people usually persue?
I'm glad you found it useful! I'm not entirely sure what the most common career out of these would be, but I would think that one of the most common and popular career options of the ones I mentioned would be a school teacher!
Actually... After seeing this video... I am... Feeling... That... I too wanna dive..... 🤩🤩🤩
You should ;)
This is very useful to me because I want a job in which I can have fun with animals and then when my brother was watching a movie, O heard about maine biology
Hi There! Huge fan great vid but.. I have a question and I really need an answer because I want to become a marine biologist but want to work in the ocean which one do you recommend for me?
Hey Eli, how could I I get in touch with you ?
I awfully need an honest advice in this field
I am oceanography student, 27 yo, fond of diving, i am licensed CMAS DIVE MASTER, BUT i have many obstacles. Waiting your response
Hey Ahmed, so sorry for the delayed response. If you'd still like to contact me, you can email me at eli.b.myron@gmail.com :)
Can you just be a diver for a lab? Like no diving officer?
Those positions can be rare, but they do exist. Working as a research technician under a marine biologist might provide that opportunity!
I'm from Sri Lanka. And I want be a Marien Biologist .Therefore what I do for achieve it and enter to Ocean University .Also I complicated my G.C.E. A/L in Sri Lanka. Please give me help for it.And your video is amazing ❤❤
That's awesome Ravindu! And thank you so much for the support.
I'm a highschool students and my dream career is marine biology but the problem is ....... 😭
Hello Sir. I am Dentist. Am I looking for Majors in Marine Biology. Should I Shift my career to Marine biology???
Thank you very much!!
Very interested in Ecolog and the Coral-List digest. Do you know of any UK/Europe based things like this?
Can you get a job with a BA/BS or would you recommend getting a Masters as well?
I really want to become a Marine biologist, and I’m on the process to. But I’m so interested in plants and Coral reef, what do you recommend me?
Marine Botany
Thank you
They just got better and better
i love the ocean and marine life but i cant even swim 😭 i need to learn asap
Thank you!!
Thank you so much! Do you have college suggestions for someone looking to do Wildlife and Fisheries? I’m in the middle of Nebraska, not too fantastic for marine biology
University of Maine
I'm not entirely certain what I might suggest for Wildlife & Fisheries, but I would do a search for the top programs for biology and environmental science!
@@oceanscholar thank you!!
I've always like studying about different animals in the ocean, but never got the chance to actually do Hands on like seeing dolphins and holding other animals
I’m 13 and want to become a marine biologist who is like diving or finding new species it’s just because I love the ocean it feels like my home I swim a lot (I’m an regional swimming middle-sex region)and I’m good at science do you have any idea for what I should do
How many Hours do Marine Scientist (NGO) word in a day
I wish I could tell you I have a number but I definitely don’t have one!
Is If you are a marine biologist you can go into sea or around sea?? 😅 and which is the highest paid carrer option??
Marine biologist, but I can't swim 😂
You might be surprised to know some marine biologists don't ever step foot in the water! Many marine biologists work strictly from their computer or the lab.
Do you have to become skinny for this? I’ve been wanting to do this for so long but I never had confidence in myself to do it.
What 😭
im DYING to study something related to the ocean ive been obsessed with it since i was little after watching octonauts and Spongebob and jaws 🥹🥹 i love biology and literally anything related to marine life 🐳🦈
Me too I have been lost for a while as to what I want to do but I really feel this is for me, I love fish, the ocean, the mystery of it and the fact there are always new species to be discovered!
I am from a mathematical background...can I pursue this beautiful course ??
Its a vibefull JOB, I love it 😘😘😘
Can you make a video about companies that are marine science or marine bio companies to search for jobs through
to become an aquatic veterinarian should i major in marine biology or veterinary medicine ?
If you have the option, I would say biology :)! It would make it much easier to pursue either later on into your undergrad
I believe you would need both
I want to study marine animals behaviour and hopefully create films on marine animals so for this would i still have to get high math marks
If the goal is to eventually study animal science/behavior, math isn't usually a HUGE portion of the career, except for statistics. Statistics are incredibly important for animal science and something you should definitely work hard to understand!
Damn how cool would it be to be an ocean game ranger :-D
Is UK good for marine biology?am from India..am looking forward to study marine biology in UK..what is your opinion about that ?..and also how can I contact you?
I was always intrested in zoology and marine biology but had to get my graduation in computer science
Fuck i hate it.
Wish i could switch the profession no matter how dangerous ocean would be.
I always had a dream of swimming with bowhead whales.
How do u become a deep sea diver or can you tell me ore about it? Also how can I join/where? United Kingdom
And are there any qualifications (degrees)
If you're looking to become a "deep sea SCUBA diver" you should definitely look into technical (TEC) diving courses, which will teach you how to dive deeper and for longer. If you're looking to begin a course I would do a google search and a bit of your own research to find a dive shop near you that offers TEC. There are no degrees that you need to begin this certification, but you will need extensive diving experience. I would find a shop and talk to an instructor to get more info!
@@oceanscholar hmmm interesting…. Thank you also what about a submarine pilot
Hello! Can I study Marine biology as my PG after UG in BMLT?
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊!
I would absolutely love to be a marine biologist. However, I cannot swim and would prefer working in labs where I can do research. Do you have any advice on how to go from here?
Being a marine biologist doesn't require you to know how to swim.. lots of scientists doesn't even dive only spent the rest of their careers in lab, writing, and giving lectures
bro i have a doubt.....which university did u study marine biology??
Florida State University!
Can someone please give me tips on how to get a scholarship after I'm done with A levels..
Along with that I still have to do my year 12 so I'd like to know some things I can do right now?
Hey I'm 17.. from India ..want to be a marine biologist .. but there's not much of scope here in India for this course .. but searching about aquatic organisms ...has been my passion since when I was 12 ..can u suggest me something that I should do ahead
Hey Rishikesh! I would suggest volunteering/shadowing at an aquarium near you, and begin preparing for a university that allows you to study biology, environmental science, or marine biology!
@@oceanscholar my final year of school is on .. I need to get good grades to go to a good college ..and final papers are 2 months later .. I literally planned as u said .. for the aquarium 🔥
Are there ones where you can interact with the animals a lot?
