- A truck makes a tight turn from Queens Boulevard in Long Island City onto Skillman Avenue. There isn't enough clearance for the truck and 3 vehicles were forced to back up.

I remember me doing right tight turn in Boston where first car was sheriff so...he backed ,turns his signals ,moved cars behind him and then wave to me when I thanked him:-)
When I first started driving I got lost in down town Baltimore 8 came to a red light and saw a cop I started waving both arms at them frantically these doucebags just waved back at me and drove off lol no joke
Couldn't have gotten a better oncoming traffic. 😁 Normal people just dont seem to understand these vehicles dont turn on a dime and they get upset when they have to back up more than three feet. Its like......helllllooooo! Do you see this thing behind me!?!
Yeah I remember delivering cars in Boston on a daily basis. It wasn’t fun at all with all the one ways
@@archangel91 when I see a trailer truck turning and If I don't have anyone behind me I usually back up to give them space for a proper turn
@@dustinlanphear422 That's awesome!!! 😁 If only we (as a people) could be more courteous instead of thinking we own the road, how much more pleasant traveling would be. Love is always the answer.
I've made this turn and plenty others through Brooklyn and Bronx. Best approach is to get in the left lane and use the entire intersection. Much smoother and quicker.
Swing too wide, cut the wheel, back up and jack knife the tractor. That works too, moves the piviot point forward.
@Justin Ward no they stop. Sometimes they dont, and when they do that its usually the last time they make that mistake.
Exactly. When it’s clear use all the space available. Could have made it without having people back up. Obviously if he’s committed and the only way to complete the turn is have the people backup then they should to get traffic moving again.
I have swung from the outside lane a
Or centered the lane to make turns like that
Yep.
This is why drivers refuse NYC trips.
I never go to NYC!!!!!
Yep not worth couple hudred extra bucks to spend entire day fighting the morons to get anywhere. Then be refused because you are a minute early or a minute late. Then fight it back out to a full truckstop to sit and get another time for delivery and hope for the best all over again.
Good! Don't come! This city wasn't built to handle 30' tractors hooked up to 53' trailers!!! They are against the law here. Your lucky they don't impound your trucks.
Yup
Only real professionals drivers make it happen tho ima city driver here n I hate when they send me to tight places but some days I have no choice n make it work just take your time n be safe
I actually love these kind of turns. Those tricky af turns that make u think and panic and then when u get thru the madness u feel like a badass. Love trucking and love problem solving
Key word- panic!
Keep it! Enjoy your misery
One does not feel like a bad ASD. Makes me wanna take my LSAT already. I always say never again after messing like that. Make a mental note and refuse a load.
Winning mindset
😂when I had to go to downtown Chicago take pick up some stage equipment for some festival my nerves were shoot and after I got out of downtown I was like damm that boy got skills
The Cr england truck behind him is ready to tear shit up though.
You know hes gonna 😂
Haha
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmfaooooo
Lol, yeah u probably rt!
Driving in places like these really make you appreciate places like Arizona , New Mexico , Texas , California desert , Nebraska , Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma ... you get the point
Sure do, New Mexico is wonderful to drive in... I keep asking myself why I don't move there. Much less traffic and the drivers are actually more friendly and they actually stop at stop signs.
Yeah honestly though this is the result of greedy shippers, receivers, and trucking companies. Trucks with 53 foot trailers used to delivery to truck terminals on the outskirts of many cities, but everyone wanted to save money. Now you have scrapes on almost every stoplight and underneath every bridge. It's all due to greed.
Indiana is the easiest I've been in. I was delivering in indianapolis, no cars and super wide roads. Place is a ghost town compared to Chicago and nyc
Been to the Bronx in my truck a few times. Made tight turns just like this. Your skills will be tested but it gives you the experience
Yes, i delivered to the Bronx numerous times. Coming out of the meat packing district is just like this.
Haven't driven my truck to the bronx but I do lower Manhattan and Brooklyn
The risk is not worth the money. One bad accident and you'll be uninsurable
Damn New York
I went to the Bronx one time and never going back
There's truck drivers out there that really deserve more money, that's all I'm saying!
From my understanding, a number of truckers feel there's two ranks of truckers: Professional Drivers, and Steering Wheel Holders. (If there are any truck-drivers reading this, please correct me if I'm wrong; I'm not a trucker but thinking about it)
Yeah, but we need more regulations to keep shippers and receivers on the outside of large cities. This shouldn't have to happen. It's the result of greed. Some company wants their stuff delivered IN THE CITY to save money, at the behest of regular drivers. I guarantee that's what's going on here.
They need a big drop off and pick up locations outside these crowded citys where smaller box trucks can go pick up the loads
Jordan Thomas you mean a middle man? That’s costly you’re fired!
Jose Valadez lol true but never know times are changing lol
Reduces productivity
Kinda already happens that way. Generally when heading into a city, all of the industrial estates will be kinda on the outskirts
You see that’s tooo simple an cost money
I've made that very turn.
It took me 30 minutes,... to make the traffic realize. Yes, you must back up.
you see..that's what I hate about trucking.these company's send these full size 18 wheelers to places like this..
If you didn't have 18 wheelers like this, the city wouldn't exist. Your car? Delivered on a truck like this. Food in your store? Truck like this. Materials to build your building? Truck like this. Materials to build the road? Truck like this.
Howard Agnew Not really. Not everything is delivered in 53” trailers buddy. Most city stores get stuff delivered by straight trucks or box trucks but a full size 53” 18 wheeler should not be in NYC.
@@6z0 u can actually get a ticket for hauling any 53 in any borough of NYC
louisdiaz316 No, you actually cant. You can haul 53 footers in NYC, just not on any parkways. How are trucks supposed to deliver to Long Island without going through the city? If they are coming from Pennsylvania or New Jersey they have to cross from The Bronx to Brooklyn.
@@howardagnew8471 What are you, some kind of trucker patriot? You know that split trailers exist, right?
Lord Jesus...imagine taking a road test in NYC to get your Class A 😩
I doubt they would. I got my CDL just north of seattle (not quite as bad as nyc but still terrible is some areas) and we didnt even come close to seattle. Thats just asking for accidents
Then he should be failed because he hit the curb. Idiotic place for CDL road test😂😂
I did.
Fatha Truth and non'ya biz - y'all are better drivers than me. The thought alone gives me anxiety lol
@@MrDAllen1124 once you live or frequent nyc, it gets easier
I dont miss driving a rig especially in NYC!
If you drive a 18 wheeler in New York City you better know what you're doing
I cant even imagine the stress level while driving something like that in NYC.
That's why I dont do OTR. Sometimes you have to use lanes that you're not supposed to be in to make it happen but alot of drivers dont like to do that and they make it hard on themselves. Remember that city cops wont pull you over or mess with you for doing what you need to do safely. #1 rule in trucking is dont hit shit.
Lake Street in Chicago is no picnic either! Great Job Driver!
Chicago is no joke either. Outskirts all good but inlet of that it can get tight quick and in a hurry. Never mind you might need a bullet proof vest at night either.
I'm new to trucking and from Chicago. Going down lake st in my 4 wheeler is nerve wrecking, lol.
Truckers: Refuse any load going to NYC.!
Don’t be a cry baby
chachopaisdead what if it’s force dispatch
That truck is to long for NYC, they're against the law here, so yeah, stay home with your highway rigs!
Honestly, there is no such thing as "forced". If you get a load and refuse to take it, the consequences are on you. But, like any job, no one can force anyone to do anything. They can just fire you and find someone else. I think I'd easily be able to explain not wanting to go to NYC. My company doesn't go there anyhow, for good reason.
Jim Funaro no it not . That Connor is not the best place to make that turn if the driver would just turn down 33 St form queens Blvd
I feel the more experience you get doing these tight turns, the better of a truck driver u become
Then this poor guy will have to wiggle his way into a dock that was designed in the 1920s to handle trucks half the length. NYC for truckers = a pain in the ass.
Imagin how us tow truck drivers feel when we are told we have to take the whole truck, trailor and all.
@@Sunofmungo point taken, though
He’s done that turn before I seen the trucks hit the pillar one to Many times . I just don’t know why the city won’t restrict trucks form making that turn All they have to is go over 33 at form queens Blvd .
This is so nice to se as a truckdriver. Totally calm and just doing his job perfectly in a very special situation!
Only day cabs should be allowed in the Boroughs of New York. They should have a massive trailer lot where OTR drivers relay the trailer to the local day cab guys who will take it to final. This is why I refuse NYC. It’s not worth the money.
Rumpel Stiltskin they kinda do. Lombardi truck stop. That’s as far as most are willing to go & somebody else can take it rest of the way
That is a day cab though
@@flighted2513 Incorrect. That cab had a sleeper. Day cabs have no sleeper an a shorter wheel base. Google is your friend....friend.
Relay trucking
This reminds me the one time I was driving in DC, smh.. I almost wanted to turn in my license 😂 but it's all good now.
I was sweating for a that guy! But he did good...nice and slow.
I droved In NYC, Brooklyn, queens and Long Island and end of day are you done super tired and stressed.
Just say no and refuse the load. No job is worth that. Especially when you ain't getting the majority of the pay for it.
The trucking company I first got my CDL with, all NYC area trips were optional.
That's a good point. The responsibility of it all far exceeds the money made.Your the only one with skin in the game. All the other experts are 1300 miles away in Indy and play racquetball at 17:30.You can always say no.I'm refuse that load.
Then don't become a truck driver. Sometimes you have to go places that aren't ideal. It's part of the job. You want to refuse stuff, buy your own truck, see how much you'll "refuse" then. Lol.
@@outhere8690 -bullshit.Refuse the load if it's rediculous.YOUR NOT A TROOP.
@@outhere8690 oh please. You're so full of shit. There are PLENTY of truckers that make a decent living without going into New York or California or Chicago. I'm there's dedicated accounts for a reason. If they weren't making money they wouldn't be doing it. You're so full of shit.
I’m just glad that it all went well and am grateful for the cooperative drivers.
My respect for truck drivers all over the globe.
At least he didn’t add another scrape on that trailer. That thing had all kinds of scrapes on it.
Most mega carrier trailers do, mostly from the yard dog
@@bigkev6349 yard dogs terrorize trailers.
Try dragging a 53 through NYC... Try it
From other drivers probably
Never been west of the Rockies or east of the Appalachians! XD
Lady's and gentleman! this is how you drive an 18 Wheeler. 😂
I used to run Brooklyn and Queens EVERY week from down here in SE Tennessee.. did it for years.. been on Queens Blvd MANY times.. ran down 31st under the EL from the Maj Deegan to Queens Blvd several times.. I enjoyed running the City...
Great job driver, take ya time. If they dont wanna move just sit ya ass there all day until they move lol. I call that the "Train" treatment. They'll eventually move out ya way
He could have made it alot easier on himself had he swung his tractor out into the lane to his left before comming up to the intersection & then proceeded with his right hand turn& end up dragging his trailer up & over the sidwalk. Its all about making room for your trailer to turn on the blind, inside turn. But then again, i was born & raised in the old school way, with old school trucks, & learning how to make room on both inside & outside turns. Our old school truck tractors were alot longer than these shorter ones with the setback axles, which required longer turning radius's. Truck safe everyone.
Should have done a buthook
the only problem with that is you KNOW some idiot will try to turn in those 2 lanes besides the truck, but you're right, he needed that 3rd lane.
Some car will always try to pass in those right lanes if you go to left to make room
Sometimes if I don’t know the area I’m surprised by turns like this and by the time I see it there’s no time or room to set the truck up for the turn so I have to do what I can.
@@GabLeGamer great comment 💯💯
Imagine taking your CDL examine in NYC. "I'm driving here! I'm driving here!" "Forget about it!"
I was that car at a left lane intersection and an 18 wheeler was turning hard right. He had to use a lot of my lane and since when I was the only car I didn't hesitate to back my happy ass up lol. He smiled and waved. I guess some guys can be assholes and not back up for these truckers. :(
I Refused any Runs to NYC... Why bother
Lucky that the cars had room to back up, if there’d been a long line of cars then they’d all be stuck and blocked intersection, I woulda used whole intersection and oncoming lane to make a wider turn, but you wouldn’t catch me driving in nyc haha wtf is that a truck route even ?? Insane
Took his time followed through. Good job. I'm from brooklyn. Its tough trucking in the city even with the truck routes. Just gotta take your time.
Being a fairly new driver loving watching this..WOW
I had to drive through manhattan once. Never again!!!
Now that's a certified driver right there!!
Nice work
My first time doing this was in cali with a ton of traffic. The second time I was able to take two lanes before I made the turn in texas. So yah you gotta move traffic sometimes... People please be patient and don't cut in front of a semi it's not easy stopping 80,000 pounds. Think the average car is 4,000 pounds. Think how long it takes to stop your car times 20! And please don't txt and drive. I see people all day long almost hit someone including me because there distracted on there phone. It can wait :)
I used to drive the 53 footers through the boroughs I forget where I was queens maybe was a detour and the cop wanted me to turn right there was a car parked on the corner I told him I couldn't turn if I did I would run the car over he said go or I'm giving you a ticket i well I went and the back tandem of my trailer went over the hood of that car I stopped and I was like what should I do the cop said they shouldn't have been parked there ..have a nice day. unbelievable
Wow...unbeleviable is right!
@@EternaLivesMatter can't make this shit up
No surprise. Being a cop is the only job I know of where they reject people who are too intelligent.
3 months in on my CDL, freshly off the trainer's truck, they gave me a load for the Bronx! I walked in to our office with my CDL in hand...up to dispatch. "I might as well give u this now and save y'all the trouble." They took the load off and sent me up i-80. Appreciate it. 🤔
Good for you sticking up for yourself! No one will cover your ass better than you.
U a bitch.

Give that truck driver a raise
Had to negotiate some tight turns up there recently, not as tight as this one but, yeah. You get the experience and confidence when you make them clean
Awesome help from the cars in the opposite lane. Also make sure tandems are all the way forward to make those tight turns, and button hook it if you can.
fr, i love it when a truck does a tight turn from Queens Boulevard in Long Island City, Queens, NYC
He would’ve failed his CDL road test, but then streets in Queens weren’t designed to accommodate 48 and 53 foot trailers, either.
Not my teacher. He said to "own the intersection". "Get in there and get it done!". Great teacher.
In real life curbs happen. The city just hates to pay to fix them. Every time the corner curb gets smashed move it back till the trucks don't hit it.
He would not have failed. He did not hit anything, took it slow and made sure he cleared it. Only thing is he should have set up in the left lane but any driving instructor with a lick of sense wouldn’t fault him for this.
That trailor I think is longer than 53 foot
@@SanDmaNTheFreakTrucker when I took my test(2018) hitting curbs was a fail.
Truck driver: “Alright work together now, move back, back back back back, I don’t got all day now, you knew what this was.”
Bravo!!!!!! He did a nice job
That driva did great all of my 20yrs of trucking I will never take a load thru the city been thru the George Washington bridge thru 95 a lot of time meet my uncle thru the bronx. I love my southern states that my home I feel comfortable. I'm local and dont wanna leave south Carolina now
Thank God he made it💯
that 12'2" on the brooklyn queens exwy makes you think you have to get off. but once you know you can drive on through, brooklyn and queens aint that bad.
And you have to plan your directions very carefully to the receiver if you’re delivering a load to NYC because it’s very difficult to turn around if you miss your street.
Great driving skill. Amazing this truck didn't scrape the underbelly of the train tracks.
In my time as a flatbedder I delivered twice to nyc once to Brooklyn and once to queens and it’ll be a cold day in hell before I ever go back
I have had to do that a few times when I drove he did an excellent job
D.o.t should do the deliveries
Woah..now thats driving. Very impressed. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Damn that was a tight turn. Ya did good👏👏👏👏👏❤️
Daamm. Great job! My respect for that driver😁👍✌✌
Cant pay me enough to go there
I crossed that intersection 6 days a week and it’s always a headache . Plus the 7 train rumbling overhead . Now 590 miles away and I feel much better
That's why I don't even have a HUT sticker don't even hesitate to give me a NYC load 😂
*_My man’s timing was off but he did that, dogonit!!! For real, 💯 percent‼️_*
Master skills maan! 👍
One of the best truck Driver!!!
Gets pretty messy when they don't back up. City's need dedicated pilot vehicles to clear the way for them at choke intersections or controlled lights set back when semis are approaching.
How do you anticipate turns like this and at what point do you go to the left lane? I was told three car lengths before should suffice when doing a button hook.
Damn Good! 1st shot good shot!
Love how other folks on the road make it very easy for the truck to turn,,,, I'm surprised there wasn't a multi bicycle pile up while the truck was in the intersection
Great Job
I’m glad he slides those tandems forward
One word of advice
Don't use your GPS lol
GPS sent my cousin down a one way street in Brooklyn. Lined with cars. Had to back up a 53ft two miles....😂😂😂
@@1EVILZ06 this literally happened to me hauling a 38' boat with a 40' trailer😂. Same spot too. GPS had me going all through NYC it wasn't the most fun experience but it sure was an experience 😅
Now.... THIS...is some great advice!!
tight right onto skillman...that's SKILL, MAN!
The worst part is not turns but clearance...!
You need clearance on all four sides
That area clearance is pretty good!!!
I've had to do that in Pittsburgh Pa.
The people at the warehouse knew that I had to be out of there by a certain hour to avoid this type of situation.
They didn't care.
And they also didn't warn me about this.
I learned my lesson and
I've never been there again
Ok I’m impressed that he managed to make that tight turn but he still went over the curb. I’m impressed but I wouldn’t use this video for practice.
He should have been there n the left lane I can’t really see over there but I’ve been in downtown areas where ima take as many lanes as I need to make the turn because you have too
He's a brave man to venture in there.
My late-fiancée was a logistician for a trucking outfit that had a yard up that way; certainly within sight of the Empire State Building. The office staff would get an earful from drivers on this matter exactly.
Thats an art form right there, I would have watched also
Why do we let trucks this long into urban areas? Why can't these be offloaded into shorter trucks more made to take these turns?
If anything he should have went further out to turn that rig, eliminating the close distance between the trailer and the pole.
You must have years of experience and millions of miles behind you...
Looks like he did a damn fine job to me. I drive fuel trucks in North Jersey. Some tight turns, but it’s a tanker, not a 53 footer. And explain, what do you mean by “if anything”?
I agree. He hopped the curb a bit, so he could've stood to swing out a little wider before beginning to crank back to the right
@Ben obrien 😂😂😂😂
Damn,that was close.
I hated loads to NYC. He would never make this turn with spread axles
Not really, dump the rear axle.
@@timothyking2296 not all trailers can dump axle
Is it something about moving the tandems back? I’ve seen that on a lot of trucking videos.
@@leroynorville4129 you move them forward actually for a tighter turning radius but then you have to watch out for tail swing. Kinda like a school bus. We move our tandems for weight distribution. You can only be 34,000 on the trailer and the drives of the truck and 12,000 on the steer axle. On a spread axle you can go 40,000. Some spreads will allow you to dump the rear axle so you can make tighter turns with out damaging the tires or twisting the trailer too much.
Good thing he had he’s tandem all the way to that front!!! It helps!!!
Like a boss!
I’m in a 2019 389 peterbilt with a 53 all chrome trailer, I need more room than this to try and avoid going up the curve
Awesome 👍
Wow so cool
Good job
Been there done that! If you're scared to drive a city go back to flipping burgers!
I did a dedicated multi day, multidrop load every week for 2 years to the city and island. Love that run!
CR England driver waiting in line: You want me to do WHAT????????????
Cr England got that sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. 😥
I have hauled onions into Hunts Point on a 48 spread axle flatbed, it's just another day, another city
Sleepers and anything over 46 ft trailer in the city is a no-go for me
I pull a 39 feet fifth wheel camper with my pickup truck, it’s not near as bad as this, but I know the feeling, I ALWAYS back up my car to give truckers and school bus drivers a chance to make their life less stressful, and they ALWAYS thank me, because they acknowledge you care for them.
Best approach for all the 18 wheels on tight turn in situations like this use defensive drive go to left line make the right turn
Have to get it done. Only been driving for like 4 months and I'm in brooklyn and queens pretty much everyday with a tri-axle lowbed. I would have jumped far left and swang that shit widddeeeee. Own the intersection
