- Fixing a broken flex pipe on my 2006 #Saab 9-3 2-0t. If all goes well, this repair should take about 45 minutes or less, and requires minimal tools to complete.

In the event a stud breaks on you, cobalt drill bits are a must to drill out the stainless steel stud. Replace with a M8x1.25 stud

Just to say thank you for the video. I carried out the work today and all went well save that someone had been there before and had sheared a stud but got over that by drilling through and replaced the stud with an appropriate nut and bolt. Works just fine. Kwik Fit wanted to charge me £650 plus VAT for the repair; they said the whole system needed to be replaced despite the fact all bar the flexi was just fine; even after 18 years. Parts cost me less than £70. Thanks again
Thanks for the video, I was so afraid of breaking the studs, I heat cycled the nuts two times and they spun right off with hardly any torque. I had issues with the chain cutter I bought not completing the cut at the top of the pipe. Your video really helped me visualize the steps and avoid the 'gotcha's'. Thanks again!
Happy to help and to keep another Saab alive and on the road!
Thank you for the instruction video. Saved me a good amount of money doing myself and not paying for an one piece exhaust pipe and muffler for over a $1k.
I have no idea how you are always so calm and collected, lol
Really appreciate this video! Gonna change my flex pipe this weekend, this helped me very much! Thank you for the video :)
Taps break because the metal chips bind in the hole,..it is important to back the tap out one full turn for each turn forward, you can actually feel the " chip" break off in doing so.
Great job explaining this! I had the same issue and it looks like the same rust on the subframe
Your lucky 1 broke. I broke 2 on my 2009 9-3 and had to torch them and bang the stud out. Was able to replace the studs only to find out that the cat changes slightly from 08 to 09. The cat was from an 06. So now I have to change the entire flex piping from an 09 to 08 or lower. So I have 1 bolt and a C clamp holding it on the other side.
GM never seems to amaze with these stupid little changes here and there. I also asked several people and forums and all said it's plug n play.
It will bolt right up they said....
It will be easy they said....
Ssuuuurrreeeee!
Good video btw.
I was hoping mine would have been the same way, sorry you ended up with the same problem.
@@OnTheWorkbench I'm going to order the same flex pipe you did. It should solve that issue. Good video. Keep postin em. 👌
Wow seems like those studs get very brittle after use. Perhaps pb blaster like 10 times in a 24 hour period would help? Idk just throwing numbers. My Cabin smells of exhaust at times and noticed a louder pronunciation from the engine bay. Is the Cat hard to replace? I see this being my future project for flex pipe plus cat. Thanks and cheers
Glad i didn’t have to do it ! RTJ Autos did mine in Stockport U.k. after doing water pump and timing chains 👌
Nice one, how much did it cost you, I also live in Stockport so will go to RTJ
Since snapping off the stud could easily happen to others doing this same repair - I'd really have liked to have seen the repair of the stud. The process for the muffler seems obvious & simple, fixing the stud not so much.
Remove/Drill out old stud, tap and replace with new stud. The trick was finding the correct replacement stud. Make sure you grease your tap and work it in and out to keep tap clean. A lot depends on drilling straight with cobalt bits. Do not use black oxide bits, cobalt bits are the magic there, along with a center punch to prevent drill bit drift.
@@OnTheWorkbench I am still trying to fix this issue. Wondering how you fit the drill in such narrow space. I couldn't have the bit straight because not enough space.
I literally just broke the stud like you did on my 9-3 2.0T
Ugh. Not fun, sorry to hear that. Just relax, have some patience and remember there is light at the other end of the tunnel.
Hi, I'm going to have to replace all three rusty exhaust manifold studs on my saab soon. You say at 5:59 that "the studs are welded in from the top..." Question: when you drilled/tapped the new holes did you:
A.) drill all the way straight through the top where the studs were welded in.
or
B.) did you drill a blind hole that went partially in but not through where the former studs were welded in from the top?
I'm guessing you drilled all the way through (A) and secured the stud with thread-locker but wanted to make sure before undergoing this repair myself.
Hi, did you end up drilling all the way through?
Thanks for the video. Very Helpful! I was able to remove the three nuts securing the flex pipe to the engine. Question: Were the new Hex nut:s (M8x1.25, flanged, stainless) hard to get on? They new ones look so much more substantial the the original nuts. Thanks
What size the clamp did you use
I have a similar oil leak near the trans that you have. Is that from a vacuum pump leak or is your trans seal going? My fluid looks oily like yours and not redish like trans. Oh- it’s TC 20:32
Could you share where you found that sleeve clamp?
Lately I hit speed bump with one way spikes sticking out and I heard painful noise. I've notice that the flexi pipe is off the rubber hangings around 5cm and i cant fit that in back in place. When I hit thes spikes I hit on cat front end. That pulls all exhaust to the back as my muffler pipe is now pushing bumper out. I can't see any cracking on flexi mesh. It looks good. But is it a chance that it extends? And stays like that. That's why I can't push it back and fitted to the hooks?
Hello mate what was measurement u cut it at ive got to do my brother's save cheers danny
Where did you fit the clips?
Any one know the part number
Can't understand why you didn't just cut the old rubber hangers off and should use exhaust paste on joints
Agree! 💯
just broke 2 of my studs.
Lmao 2 of my bolts sheared off... greeattt
I know the pain! Good luck!
dude really just torqued an exhaust clamp lmao
