I had just finished performing the Saint-Saens cello concerto. The conductor asked me to play the last movement of a Mahler symphony which has a soprano soloist. This was after the intermission. I was sitting next to the first cellist. Just after the movement began, my A string broke. Without any hesitation I played all of the high notes on the D string. I’m always amazed at what you can do just to survive.
ha ha awesome way to keep on playing - the show must go on they say! I can't imagine the ledger lines needed for those notes though. one would think the composer would ask a violin to step in at that point, or a piccolo :) and the players behind you are amazed at notes you are getting out of that cello, not to mention the d string
