I worked for Hermès perfumes and I developped a great taste and love for this beautiful world and for the history of perfumerie. I'm now a collector and I love the rarest perfumes from any olfactive family.
Hermès, Guerlain, Sisley and Armani Privé are great houses to start from.
I'm kind of sad to see Chanel n°5 was number 1. As someone who has spray all types of perfumes on any person possible, it really depends on the skin. When I spray it on me no 5 has very strong aldehydes, but after a couple of hours, it smells like fresh roses and ppl compliment on me a lot. And it lasts 24 hours so it's worth every penny.
Each skin marries each own perfume 🥰, when you love a perfume, the perfume loves you back. And it's a beautiful world to explore if you have an open mind and you let yourself be surprised.

Perfume preference is very personal - and each person's chemistry changes it, so what you love on someone else may smell awful on you.
I desperately wish I could find my favorite OLD scents ( BEFORE they were secretly "updated")

    • @oseasviewer7108
      @oseasviewer7108 10 месяцев назад +15

Fragrance is no longer manufactured using natural components - the bulk of fragrances are wholly synthetic produced by a group called International Flavours and & Fragrances. (They produce all the smells one associates with cleaning products the fragrance in cosmetics, hygiene & personal care products and flavourings used in food manufacturing).
They produce the so called raw materials that locations like Grasse in the south of France use to formulate the house brand perfume releases. A team of 'noses' as they are called will create the fragrance commissioned by a luxury brand. Because of cost there are a great deal of substitutions in the formulations therefore old favourites will inevitably change due to cost and focus on profit margin. More often than not the bottle is more expensive than the fragrance.

Locating old formulas will be difficult and also because time is never kind to natural ingredients.
Instead seek out new experiences - recently I sampled a range from Salvatore Ferragamo called Storie de SETA of which there are 4 or 5 themes only 2 had any interest for me - on the skin it's quite light and soothing in its notes profile - worth testing on the skin. Try them on different days but don't commit to buy until the right assembly of notes are there for you.

I think when a perfume is really popular it can get a disproportionate amount of hate. Chanel #5 is an all time classic for a reason and BR540 might be the most cloned and copied scent DNA at this moment. So while people gonna hate, I’d be willing to be the number of people who love those greatly outnumber the hate.

Right. Through lots and lots of sampling, I've learned a couple of "rules of thumb" about "parfums" in general: (1) To me, anything by Chanel will smell atrocious on me. (2) To me, anything by Yves Saint Laurent will smell intoxicating on me. I can't say how they smell to anybody else -- I think the only time anybody ever asked me what I was wearing because it smelled good, it was Armani Mania.

    1. spray on the paper from further away
    2. spray once
    3. wait 20 seconds
    4. then smell
otherwise you only get top notes and alcohol which is not how the perfume was made...
the way you test them of course nothing's gonna smell good... also test 3 max with time in between cause how can you make out the smell properly if every smell just intertwines with one another

About 30 years ago a work colleague's boyfriend was a perfumist (he custom made perfumes) and had the gift of extra sensory smell. He could literally walk around a room of 100s of people and tell every person the perfume/after shave, shampoo/conditioner and skin moisturizer they were wearing purely by smell. Not only that he could advise the person what they "should" be wearing based on the emission of natural aroma from their body. He told me that every perfume smells differently on each individual because of how their own body behaves and that to truly appreciate a fragrance, you should spray some on your wrist then go about your normal day for 2-3 hours before you really sense it and then you will know how it really smells on your skin.

I wear Beautiful by Estee Lauder, and don't care what anyone says. EVERYTIME I wear it, some man will always stop me and ask what it is. I am 60 and have long hair, and once a man stopped me to smell my hair. You can't make this stuff up. I just wear it on the skin and a tiny amount of the lotion on my hair. Several weeks ago my mother and I went to see a performance and couldn't find a seat. We exited by an usher, and one of them followed me and directed us up the elevator to two lovely seats. I believe this smells differently on everyone. I'm not beautiful, but my perfume is.

Although I'm a bit late to the party, I must say that Baccarat Rouge must NEVER be sprayed on paper. When I first smelt it on a piece of paper I was absolutely disgusted and couldn't understand how someone can like this abhorrent chemical weapon at such an ungodly price. But then I thought of returning to the shop in a month and then sprayed it directly on my skin. And God almighty! the scent started playing out gorgeously. This is a molecular perfume so it plays tricks when on skin. The smell is actually stronger at a distance rather than when you try smelling it directly from the skin. It absolutely needs to mix with your body chemistry to really shine. And it wraps you in a cozy warm and sweet bubble of luxury.

Well, funny thing is that many of these parfumes are rated very high by reviewers, who actually understand the art of perfumery in the first place. It only proves one thing - young girls' noses aren't trained enough to appreciate the more sofisticated smells. I don't think I'm an "old lady" (agreeing with others you should really ditch that phrase), yet I respect many of these perfumes and have them in my collection for an occasional moment. I advise you to take a look at niche brands, like Lutens, Penhaligon' s, Guerlain's L'art et la Matière collection, Dyptique, etc, you will discover gems, and people will really compliment you. They are on the expensive side, true, but the essences, and concentration, above 25%, perfume, above eau de parfum, are worth it. It lasts for ages, has complexity, evolution on your skin. I'm hyperosmic, meaning I smell more than average people. I assure you there is a big difference. I could imagine what a perfume smells just by reading the pyramid. These fragrances are among the top selling perfumes in the world. I personally own SIX (6) of these. It is my personal opinion that this survey is for the most LOVED fragrances. Also, as a side note, fragrance is a personal preference and how it smells on an individual is completely based upon one's body chemistry. Ten women can wear the same fragrance and it smells different on all ten! You can wear an inexpensive fragrance but if it blends well with your body chemistry, you will smell like a million bucks!

Hello ladies, I just want to make a comment about Opium. It was from the 70’s and I loved it back then. It was a rich long lasting fragrance and it was made from distilling plants and not made in a lab. Some years now it resembles nothing of its former self and I was informed by a consultant that the European Union had told various perfumers that they needed to change their formula and water it down. I believe that Guerlain also had to do this.
I like fragrance made from plants not out of various bottles by a technician.
That’s why I love going to France there are so many independents making scents

Nocturnes de Caron was my signature scent for years (beginning in the 1980's when it was created) but then it stopped smelling the way it had before and I found out that it was because they began using synthetics instead of natural ingredients (flowers).

You are absolutely correct. There are small businesses in U.K. and France that produces their own scents it’s just a problem finding them.
I went to Grasse in France many years ago to the perfume factory there where I believe it all started. You could have a tour to see the different methods of extraction. Very interesting. I haven’t looked to see if they are still there but a great opportunity if you can go.
I buy oils and wear them sometimes. like Jasmin. Rose is very expensive because of the amount of petals it takes to make a small amount.
Right now I don’t know what the answer is.

Yeah, contrasting the Poison wearer with "someone in their teens", seems like we're dealing with a teenager's idea of what constitutes an old lady.
Then we have the "who would wear this" and "who writes these descriptions" it seems like a very unsophisticated person reacting to complexity.
I think this channel is a little girl's idea of "elegance "

For each of the perfumes she's not stopping to think that perfumes are different on everyone. Chanel No. 5 does smell awful on some women. I also don't think that it can be worn by young women. For example, one of my favourite perfumes of all time it is Baccarat Rouge 540(my chosen one is Versace bright crystal though!)! Every time I put this perfume on(BR540) I get many many compliments, so ladies, from my perspective I would say some opinions should be taken with a pinch of salt, as different people have different taste, especially when it comes down to smelling.

It’s amazing how perfume smells take you to a specific time-frame and event. I wore Estee Lauder White Linen on my wedding day in the 80’s and loved it, now any time I smell it I’m transported back to that wonderful day. For years now I wear Coco Mademoiselle and occasionally Prada Milano, stuck in my ways 😁. I also remember wearing Samsara in the 80’s and Opium now they make me nauseated!

A perfume always blendd with a person's own chemistry. When it's good, it can be amazing! But when it's not a good mix, nothing can fix it, no matter how expensive or cheap it is.
When I was a very young teen, I thought Giorgio's Red smelled lovely. Then I worked for a woman who bathed in it every day. It was so nasty when she wore it, poor thing. Eyes watered, noses stung... every single day. So if a cologne doesn't work for you, it seriously wasn't made for you & your body. 😊❤

    • @kateanette9398
      @kateanette9398 10 месяцев назад

It often comes down to the amount you spray. If you're an oversprayer and douse yourself in anything, it quickly becomes annoying and unpleasant.
Also, the more you spray, the less you smell it yourself (anosmia), and people around you suffer. Using only one perfume also makes you get used to it, and not smelling it yourself anymore, which leads to overspraying.
