- Here are six Pompano fishing secrets that I learned recently while chasing these fish along the surf, inlets, jetties and from bridges. I've been catching them on lures (jigs and teasers), but five of these tips will help you catch more Pompano with live bait as well.

Thanks JC, very informative as always. The only thing I would add is that the reason Pompano migrate is to stay in water temperatures of 72-82 degrees. If your area is out of that temperature range your obviously not going to catch Pompano. Also, besides the jigs with a teaser a live sand flea is hard to beat as this is their main source of food. Thanks again.

I appreciate the information. I’m 65 and have been fishing my whole life, but had never caught a pomp. Finally went fishing for them off Pensacola Beach using your info and caught my first one. Sautéed it in butter and served with the butter and roasted almonds on top. Looking forward to getting back out there in the spring.

It's been my experience JC that most people posting videos on you TUBE don't SAY WHERE THEY'RE FISHING
I'll have to pay more attention to that. I know there are several Pompano videos where people have named bridges and beaches they are fishing. With some research usually land marks will point a RUclips fisherman in the right direction. Then again, I've seen videos where people have named a location and then the fish they were catching was not in that location, ha ha...Thanks for commenting.

@@RadReelingFishing I could understand if you're fishing a lake, and you have your secret spots for Crappie, or Bass where you've identified structure that hold fish and not share that information with just anybody. Surf fishing is a little different, like you said, the fish move around and are seasonal , it's not like there is one spot that always holds fish all year long, it's more what kind of tackle to use, when, and how to use it. Sharing some of your good spots with people new to the area or just new to fishing is just good sportsmanship.

I agree with all of this. Also, you can tip the jig with shrimp. It can be dead frozen or fresh cut. Just that scent can help when its slow.

JC I am on Vacation this week and I am at North Topsail Island NC and I got a good supply of the Wacky Jigs and not many people here use them. I have tried then a couple of times but went this morning and caught two nice Spanish and one small blue fish. I guess I have no confidence in the wacky jig. It was ruff this morning and caught the Spanish on Yozuri crank baits. Normally I would throw Gotcha plugs for them. We do catch them here but not the numbers like Florida. Maybe that’s the problem .

Thanks, most comprehensive video on Pompano fishing I've seen yet. I'm searching for information about fishing for Pompano from a boat more than from shore. And, maybe someone using a nautical chart showing bottom features (contours, grassy, sandy, rocky, etc.) where good pompano fishing would be likely. Drifting or anchoring? Again, thanks!

Love your video and the info was great but what are your favorite lures for pompano. I use a crappie jig 1/4 oz pink head with a pink and chartreuse body. Works wonders.

Great tips, especially on jig size based on current/depth. Guys that helped me learn to use snook jigs at different inlets always have a preferred size for their location as well.
Yeah, I usually use 2 oz. for Snook in most places, but I have one bridge where I always use 1.5 oz.. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Question: For those from nearby States who will be vacationing West Coast Florida,
should we catch Pompano, should we Clean them there Before we pack them on Ice to take home
on a long trip back (i.e. 6 hrs road trip back home), or freeze them in packed Ice in our Coolers, and then at home thaw them a little, Clean them at home? Seems like there would be a greater chance for bacteria contaminants to occur if cleaning the fish is done before I take Pompano home. Would you consider producing a RUclips Tutorial for Out-of-State fishermen?
Thanks for commenting. When I go to the east coast for about four days I always clean my catch, put the fillets in zip lock bags and keep it them iced really well. When I get home they go in the freezer. I don't know much other than that.

JC, I am a new subscriber to your channel. Awesome job. I am heading to Belleair Beach FL at the end of January. I mostly fish in the Destin area and target Spanish Mackerel and Pompano (Surf fishing). I'm new to the Tampa fishing area and was wondering if these species are catchable in January from the surf.
There may be some around. It depends upon the water temperature. Have you tried to catch some in the surf this month?

Walmart had them with the jigs. Also small hometown tackle shops in my area carry them.

Good video JC, most important piece of advice is to get out there and do it. The more you fish, the more you'll catch. Mark patterns and write them down. Dates, times, tides, moon phase,ect.
That's a good idea on keeping a record of what's happening. I usually upload the videos soon after recording them so I have a time recorded and usually remember the best tides, but no info recorded on moon phase. Thanks for the idea.
Conflicting information from different RUclips channels. One trusted source says Pompano run higher in the water column and not on the bottom. He almost exclusively uses Pompano rigs with one drop loop about 24" off the bottom. Do Pompano act differently in different areas of the Gulf Coast?

What time of the year is good to catch pompano from the beach?
SW Fl. I recall catching them in March and April from the beach. Water temperature seems to make a big difference. I've also caught then in passes during September and October.
What pound test leader is best?
I've been using 25 lately. Those big ladyfish snap 20 lb test too easy, not so with 25.
I can't drink beer if I'm working a jig.Give me some frozen shrimp and fishbites,or fishgum. And I catch em.

Hey! Great video...just a comment on one of the pictures you flashed...holding snook by the bottom jaw will more likely than not kill the snook by breaking it. The snook will be able to be revived if it's jaw is broken; however, it will starve. In studies, around 30k or more snook die each year from mishandling. Veteran anglers commit this malpractice quite often, so it's not a problem with experience, but a problem with awareness, so please do not take offense.
Thank you for sharing your insights. Another pointer is jigging technique. You will see pompano fisherman use exaggerated movements up and down. If it is windy, you can work the jig like any other lure by working the tip of your rod down towards the water. I concur with the fisherman who talked about his hypothesis regarding a deft touch. I have seen pompano scatter in clear water with an aggressive technique. However, it depends on the day. You have to vary the technique and color based on conditions and more importantly the presentation that attracts the bite.
