After beautiful Moorea our next stop was Huahine. Just over eighty nautical miles away. Close enough to contemplate a day-time passage if you have a fast boat. Tanda Malaika set off at first light but unfortunately did not make it in before dark. After the sun set they collided with the reef at the southern tip of Huahine. The Navionics SonarCharts were wrong. The reef, visible in the regular setting of Navionics, disappeared when switched to the Sonar charts. At night the breaking waves are invisible until it is too late. Sadly all of these factors saw Tanda Malaika run into the reef in the dark.
Needless to say, we opted to for a safe and slow overnight passage to put us into Huahine in daylight. With just the genoa up, we were on alert. Alert to all the dangers we face out here on this big blue ocean.
We've seen it twice now on our travels through the south pacific; Cruisers colliding with reefs in the middle of the night. Under full sail. Under the assumption that charts are accurate. It's awful and heartbreaking. Dreams destroyed in seconds by a violent collision with a reef. Every time the results are complete and total destruction. Rudders ripped off. Sail drives sheared. Keels pushed up through hull. Life trajectories altered permanently.
It sends shivers through our spines seeing these wrecks. It could easily have been us. Sometimes it's as simple as not zooming in far enough on a map. Other times it's trusting one map over the other. Our hearts go out to the crew of Tanda Malaika.
Dangers aside, Huahine has beautiful crystal clear waters and is well protected all the way around by that "barrier reef". A very nice feature if you are planning an epic dinghy ride. For those of you asking questions about this incident I am youngest daughter of the family that shipwrecked on Tanda Malaika. Just to clarify somethings, we hadn't planned to enter port at night and at the time of the incident we were sailing along the coast, not entering port. I can assure all of you that we didn't mean to damage or dirty the reef and we did our best to clean it up. We had traveled safely aboard her for two years prior the accident and never anticipated anything like it to happen. We had insurance for the full two years other than the month of the accident because we were switching insurance companies. And we didn't plan on just leaving her there, we were trying to find someone that had the money to fix her. We didn't salvage her ourselves because it would have cost almost more money (and time) to repair her than to buy a new boat. A local has taken her on land and is making her into a home again and I hope he has an amazing time and lots of laughs aboard her. For those of you saying its our fault, we already know that. We take full responsibility. I'd like to thank those of you that stood up for my family. It means so much to me. And for the people criticizing us, you might be surprised to know that it doesn't make grieving any easier. Emma, my heart goes out to you and your family. What an amazing time you all must have had in the two years of sailing, but what a tragedy for it to have ended for your home to run aground and not be able to do anything to save it. Ignore the haters and ill informed comments, what is important is that you are all safe to sail another day sometime. Fair winds to you and your family.
Imo inviting random sheeple into your life/adventure is those kno-it-all's can just as easily turn into rabid dogs so eager to devour you, truly sorry for your families loss

Well said Emma. I started reading your moms blog unfortunately after the accident but went all the way back to beginning and read to the present. The story of the wreck all y'all went through and how you have come out on the other side stronger as a family is truly inspiring. I wish you and your family nothing but health and happiness and look forward to anchoring along side you one day in the future.

We ran aground up a river once (inland from Faro in Portugal) but luckily it was on sand. We took the anchor out as far as we could in our 2.5 HP dingy, which wasn't far at all, and thankfully a full tide and winching us off the bank helped free us.
Thanks for admitting that. We did as well in the Florida Keys. The difference was it was sand.

@Donald Mackay years ago a friend of mine was a passenger in a flat bottom boat slicing up a delta region, the boat driver was drunk. As they made a fast turn there was a lady fishing in a small boat, possibly a canoe and the speed boat hit her broadside. She was killed instantly.

I was just in Huahine and the boat is on the main island up in the trees at someones house. I didn't know the story before and just thought it was a really weird place to see a Catamaran!
fuck them for leaving their shit on our reef...the guy that has the boat is the one that pulled it out of the reef...Those POS don t care about our reef and our lagoon....coral was destroyed to get it out...and owners left like thieves...good job fuckers

This even happens to professional sailors. A couple og years ago Vestas wrecked their boat on a reef during Volvo Ocean Race
One of those eels relatives bit me on the leg while I was swimming in Lake Rotoroa in New Zealand.... ouch!
Every circumnavigatior I've met has had the most curious caution with the modern chartplotter. It seems the most experienced they get, the less they trust electronic trickery. The loss of a vessel to rocks or shore is more common than one to rough sea. Knowing this keeps me very cautious of land, particularly a lee shore at any time of the day or night.
Regarding some of the careless comments here: Its easy to criticize from any position, be it a couch or from your own blue water vessel.
Unless you were there and lived the circumstances leading up to this tragic and terrifying event, keep your nasty comments to yourself.
The islanders will have had this vessel stripped off the reef in no time. There will be almost no sign she was ever there by now.

Very sad, and proof that an experienced sailor's instinct about not relaxing until well out to sea is a good one. Lubbers always ask if I'm worried about sinking out at sea. "No" I tell them. "All the bad stuff happens near the shore". So double check your chart, course, and position regularly at sea, especially if you are within 10 miles or so of land. This could have turned out much worse for the family, thankfully it didn't. Here's hoping they get a new boat soon, and continue their journey.
...and to the haters - It's wise to remember that this sort of thing can happen to anyone, even the very best sailors in history have lost boats to reefs and beaches. Bernard Moitessier, one of the greatest single handed sailors of all time lost 3 boats during his career, so have a little humility and compassion here.

I find the deeper the water I'm in, the better I feel....
I am an airplane pilot but I am also a total landlubber other than ski boats on lakes. As I watch these videos I am shocked at how often Ashly mentioned that charts are off by MILES. I have every expectation that my aviation charts are accurate down to a few meters. I know I can hit the runway with towels over the windows. I KNOW I will not fly into that TV tower in fog. In this day an age of Satnav/GPS/digital charts I am SHOCKED to find that you could be indicating deep water on your GPS/chart and yet plow into a reef! I will say it one more time. I find that stunning and terrifying!
More commonly it happens nearshore but not always there can be rocks in the ocean

Ashley: feeling your sea sick pain... we spent 10 days across the South China Sea and I was sick the whole time. If I even went inside I would get green. Must be something in the air when out to sea around there. As soon as we were coastal cruising, I felt fine again.
+Hooks and Hairspray oh bummer! That sounds horrible as I well know! I will usually just sit in the helm seat outside when the motion is bad. Often I find I get used to the motion after a couple (2-3) days. But when we haven't been doing passages for a while it can be tough. Maybe some of the other comments on this episode can help you out on your next passage! (Ash)

The most important thing is that no one got hurt. You can replace anything but life. Accidents at sea happens even to the most experienced sea men. Whatever little damage happened to the reef is not more important than people's lives. Besides the reef will heal itself. What i dont understand are the high and mighty idiots who are negatively commenting on a sad accident as if they intentionally did that !!! Jealousy is a bitch. Wish you the best.

Well, since you asked, by saying "I cant understand...", let me explain it to you. First of all, saving human lifes is a form of ideology, towards witch you were raised up and indoctrinated with collective social belifs, parenting, school, TV, internet,ect. That doesnt make it so.
I can argue, but I wont, that homo sapiens is omnicidal psychopathic species, responsible for 6th mass extinction, a dead end virus like mistake of a nature, and that we all deserve to die in a mass extinction. I wont argue that, as there is nothing to argue about. Its the fact.
Other homo sapiens, that you are so outraged about, the one that yaps about koral reef damage, they are only reacting to their envy, thinking how ritch people enjoys life on the seas, while destroying nature. Nothing could be further from the truth, like you properly stated for the wrong reasons. These people are among the best that species homo produced, living full life to their ability in this set of living arrangements. And yes, reef will recover from this wreck, but it wont recover from homo sapiens. Not for the next 10-20 milion years it wont.
Replace anything but the reef, more valued than your pathetic human life. But at least you had a good time at everything else's expense.

They hit an unmarked reef in the early evening (in the dark) while coming into this island and had to be taken off by helicopter. Everyone got off safe and they then had to strip the boat once it was decided that it was a write off They seem to be making a new life in Bali. . . .hubby has gone back to work as a pilot . . .wife and kids are connecting with folks where they are now.

Ash, The best thing for sea sickness, Is the patch behind the ear, so next time in a marina that has a Pharmacy get them. I was in 30 foot seas and never new it, everyone was sick and throwing up, and i was happy and drinking. I have never been to New Zealand, but you both make me want to go. Take care and be safe.

I feel really bad about Tanda Malika. I don't know if I would try going into any of these islands at night though with so many reefs around and the charts being crap and all for most of these places in the South Pacific. I hope the extended loss is minimal for the family!

WOW! Nice to see it from another angle. I'm not a sailor but after watching hundreds of videos, I personally would never sail at night around land or a reef. Yes on a passage but never around a port, marina or anchorage unless I've been there in the daylight and know my way. Not casting any blame here...but just sayin...
onthebeaches1 A lot of these reefs are out in the middle of the ocean not close to any land at all. They're just uncharted. Pretty scary to me.
Look up Bassas da India on Google maps. Delos had an episode where they went there and it had tons of shipwrecks. It's out there in the middle of the ocean. I think on passage, they almost have to sail? Otherwise, I'd guess you'd just be drifting. If your watch person can't see it and it's not on your charts.....

The oceans are very well charted. But the electronic charts miss reefs. Not the paper. I am wondering how this happened too. A friend has been sailing his sailboat around fiji for 7 months and swears the google earth over lay is the best solution. Pre down load your area and take it sailing with you.
@@sails3538 the oceans are well charted you say?lol seriously the moon and Mars have more accurate charts,the ocean is constantly evolving and I could show you reefs and sandbars that change almost daily.
@@sails3538 Makes sense since all the photographs are taken by satellites in space. While Google Earth surfing I have taken note of underwater formations, but never realized they could be used as a navigation aid, pretty cool. I'm no sailor, but my dad was and when I was a kid I went out with him on his friend's Steel Craft boat to go salmon fishing well beyond the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. People who are familiar with the "Potato Patch" beyond the gate know it as being pretty damn treacherous and downright scary sometimes. However, on this occasion the seas were calm and I was thankful for that, but it was so foggy out you could only see about 30'. I went to the bow of the boat at one point for no reason and not long after I picked up the sound of waves crashing ahead of us. I realized right away it was the sound of waves crashing on rocks and then observed a scary sight, indeed, waves crashing on an exposed rocky formation and if it had not been for me yelling to turn left we would have struck them. Fortunately, the rocks were just off the right side of the centerline, the seas were calm and we weren't going that fast because of bad visibility, so turning the boat allowed us to miss the rock formation by about 5' to 7'. It was an eerie experience and I remember the boat owner arguing with my dad about navigating afterward.
I am so sorry for your loss, disregard all the negative comments . We all make mistakes, you own up took it on board. Keyboard worries are wanker, hope you get another boat and continue your Journey.

I and some friend tried to save a sailboat that hit a reef we ran to help and tried to push it off the rock. What we learn was best to anchor down right away, cause the waves or big set will push it it up more on the reef and that middle ridge prevent us to push it back unless the waves comes. And you can’t push it that mass vs wave is too large. Don’t know if the anchor would hold it stead and if it did just wait till high tide comes around again. But if it’s way up the reef high tide isn’t of help. Reallly sad to see a boat on rocks.

Raiatea airport has a small stream there, if u throw food into the water these eels come... they look like electric eels.. ever make it to Hawaii, holla! amazing video, what a nightmare. cruisers worst nightmare..... I wake up at night now with these images of that boat on the reef saying to myself is our anchor holding.... keep up the videos and exploring.. I just bought my boat this week.

Isn't something existing like a huge balloon which you can pump with air or other gas you use for diving and get the boat back to the next deck?
And isn't google maps also useful to navigate carefully? I only did some boating several times and I always used that and it was always working properly.

I'm thinking about sailing.. I'm just curious (so I can learn), wouldn't the anchor stop this from happening, or was the anchor not applied and stretched out correctly? Also, don't the depth monitors also catch these? I think I read in the comments it wasn't charted so the electronic maps didn't know it was there.. What about a depth monitor, or radar or consomer sonar, would either prevent something like this (whenever I get a sailboat) aor any other electroncis recommended?
Tropical reefs are like cliffs, so depth sounders and anchors are useless. Stay well offshore or get fcked like these fools.

We were very sorry to learn of this unfortunate incident. The Navionics chart of Huahine, is derived from official French Hydrographic Office Charts as well as satellite imagery.
Despite our accuracy, charts have errors whether it is a result of survey errors or source errors. This applies to ALL charts, whether government or private, official or otherwise. The International Hydrographic Organization stated that less than 10% of the seas are charted as well as the Moon, and even that 10% contains errors. This is why the common rules of navigation require that skippers, in addition to official charts, use multiple sources of information, including sailing directions, cruising guides, radar, sonar, local diligence and good eyesight. With the best chart in the world, one should never get close to coral reefs at full speed and at night, but rather when the sun is highest, at very slow speed, and with a person on watch on the bow. This is the only way to ensure that breaking waves be spotted from a distance, and that possible uncharted coral heads be avoided.

+arumrunner thanks for the comment! It is important to remember that not all charts are accurate! We have encountered a few reefs/islands that are off enough to cause serious problems on both navionics and the cm-93 maps we have in opencpn. The San Blas, Beveridge Reef and Huahine to name a a few. We have found satellite imagery and cruisers sharing of other hand scanned charts have helped us along the way. @@SailingNahoa Is there a clearing house for sailors reporting uncharted reefs? The gentleman from Navionics mentioned sonar as a navigation aid, I was thinking of asking about that. Everybody had radar, but why isn't sonar just as popular? I used to have a small aluminum boat with a fish finder, now that is like sonar is it not?
How strange, I lived in Ventura CA at one time.
