    I chewed betel nut when I was in Micronesia for a couple months (mainly in Palau and Pohnpei). It is a bit addictive, but the red spittle isn't from gums bleeding. It is just the chemical reaction of the nut and the lime. Each island group has a different recipe, we didn't use mustard for example, but we wrapped the nut in a leaf before chewing. It warms you up after scuba diving!

    • @mike76rob
      @mike76rob 6 лет назад +6

      Some of it if and some of it isn't. Beetlenut can cause cancer of the mouth which produces a lot of blood.

      Being from Micronesia myself, the only way that I know how to get that red stuff is through the leaf you described. I admit I hadn't tried it with mustard myself but I do agree that it is extremely addictive! I think they missed a step or two on how to make a proper betelnut mix. However it's understandable being that this is a sailing channel.

      that leaf is from the mustard tree. In PNG, some people also use the leaf, especially when the mustard fruit is still growing

    Ben. Is that the fish you mentioned to me earlier or was it the one from the past video about a month ago? If you feel the rod tip as you pull in fish you can start to tell the species. Billfish stay up usually. Mahi you can feel head shake while tuna you can feel thier tail. Hard to explain but think about what you felt once you pull in a fish and you will start to tell what you have and know better on how to manuver the boat to catch it quickly.

    I should be sailing out to the Louisiades from Oz later on this year, did you clear immigration / customs in the louisiades or did you go to mainland PNG? I have just picked up on your videos so please excuse if I missed a bit of information. Also what's been your average anchoring depth? In meters? As I am in a smaller mono my max is 80 meters of chain so any infor like that, island names if any anything is appreciated. The amount of items I can carry will be a bit more limited so most common items asked for would be helpful. Oh and the short fat bananas are generally referrd to as lady fingers.

      Dive masks! We gave a guy a dive mask and intern provided him with a job. They harvest a fair amount of sea cucumber and export to Asia. Small fish hooks & line, light weight sail material for their sailing canoes, solar lights, some islands really struggle with drinking water. Spare line is always popular. Possibly some educational books for younger men looking to get into mechanics or similar. Maybe basic electric trouble shooting for fixing solar lights. Rice, sugar, basic human needs are always welcome. Good luck. You’ll love it!

    They’re not spitting out blood! The reason why it is often forbidden is that chewing betel nut involves sporadically spitting red saliva which stains, a lot. The red saliva comes from the chemical reaction between the caustic lime, areca and saliva.

    Love the channel guys. You should know however that smoke flares contain toxic chemicals and shouldn't be tossed into the reef unless its for rescue

    Where do you get all of your info ahead of time? For example, how did you know to fill up with supplies for the locals? Absolutely love your videos and can't wait to get out there soon!
