Love a parametric EQ bit of a secret weapon! This one I find really useful to take out an annoying hiss from an otherwise awesome fuzz. These are like tone surgeons!!!
Pete, of all the pedal demo guys on RUclips you are the most versatile dude. You do a great job using the gear in many genres and your playing is phenomenal. Thanks for all you do.
I got this a few months ago, totally fantastic state of the art pedal and to me, far superior to graphic EQs. My second Empress after getting their equally great revamped compressor pedal. You're getting top notch quality for your money and this is a time when spending more also gets you more, a lot more. Bonus for me in supporting a Canadian company .
I have the previous generation several years now and love it. These also make fantastic guitar preamps for going straight into AD conversion when using amp sims or re-amping.
I know eq’s are perceived as a utilitarian type box and probably not as popular, however I sure appreciate you demo’ing them as I use them on everything🤘
Notice that this pedal works as a 27V one (for more headroom), has a wide Q factor control for each band and shines in front OR in the loop (for tone shaping)... also it has a very efficient LPF/HPF (as shown in the demo; remove the fizz not the sizzle, kill the flubbiness not the oomph)... IMHO this pedal is a keeper
Damn straight. But if you need this kinda EQ, you are playing the wrong amp, with the wrong speaker and using the wrong guitar. For realz playa! That is straight from the Studio Gods. Facts. EQs are for newbies.
I feel like there was a lot going on there but your playing was also killing so I was just caught in the groove! Awesome tune and the demo was good too! Haha
Could you please touch on some techniques for dialing in a parametric EQ? Between the Katana and my Boss GT1 there are EQ's all over the place but I don't think I'm using them correctly.
Picasso had the blue period, red period etc. Bob Dylan had the pre-electric and post-electric. This is a new Pete era with the new hair-do. The guy is just awesome. Love him.
I’ve thought about buying one of the previous models for two years now… but, after seeing this tonight with even more controls, I think I’m going to order one ASAP. EQ is really what I need… not the half dozen overdrives I have!
I was on the verge of dropping $3k on a new amp but decided to see if this EQ would answer. It absolutely does. With just small tweaks, it makes all my guitars sound better, and compensates for the limitations of my amps (Carr Sportsman & /13 JRT 9/15). Interesting that I can leave most settings in place for both single coil and humbucker guitars, and just lower/raise the lows/mids 3-6dB either way to match the pickup type. The boost is also amazing.
Just out of curiosity. What would the guitar community think of a dual pedal thats the Empress ParaEq MkII DLX and the Empress Compressor MkII with a toggle switch that changes the order, and a trs i/o that allows for making each side independent in ur signal chain or with a flip of a dip switch make the trs a stereo i/o for using like a channel strip at the end of your chain? I want this pedal so bad, but to take it further, it would be cool if the compressor was like the Crazy Tube Circuits Golden Ratio Phi where u have OTA, FET, and Optical options and add an expression output that can control a HP or LP filter for filter sweeps. I know thats a lot for one pedal, but a person can dream. 😁
Adrian Belew in the early 80's used to get this electric unplugged twang sound that I could never quite figure out how to get.... (You just showed me where to go Pete)
Adrian used a Palmer Rack Amp. That was the secret to his tone. This half assed piece of overpriced gear will not get you close to The Great Adrian's tone. No matter what Pere says.
I’ve got the standard version on the way. I’ve had 3 MXR 10 band eq’s fail or just be super noisy and I think as cool as the deluxe version is, I’m afraid I’d get choice paralysis and, for me, less is more.

I tell you what!! Everytime I see Pete grinnin from ear to ear! I know it's gonna be a freeky Groovy Tune!! U Did not let me down Pete, U rocked it Out of The Park Brother!! Love me some EQ that pedal is almost as awesome as U Pete 🎸🤘🤠👍🔥
In front of a Deluxe clone, to control bottom end, and sweeten mids and control harsh top end, AND to potentially adjust volume/signal between different guitars, do you place this pedal early in the chain (post germanium fuzz) or at the end of the signal chain? I’d be running fuzz, compression, two or three OD pedal and a delay pedal.
The real test of a good EQ is if it stays out of the way of the actual guitar tone so you don’t wind up with that slightly processed sound. Does this do that?
Hi! I looking for parametric EQ pedal to my chain...not for guitar... for boosting, coloring my beats sound before send to daw. Could you recommend something? Thanks
Excellent work in this video. I’m a new fan. Am looking for a really good floor eq that can help shape my mesa nomad 55 2x12 because it lacks bass meat. Any ideas on what would be optimal in the $200/$250 range? I saw a para eq fur $199 used. Any ideas would be so much appreciate.
It's not bad once you're familiar with what the knobs do and if you know what you're trying to achieve. Without some basic eq-ing knowledge you can make things worse quickly though.
How much shaping of ‘tone’ does a guitarist need?! It’s more to do with the music than it is the sound of a guitar. Chasing effects pedals is a fetish and at some point in the late 80s everything became repetition.
I would agree that some people go way too heavy on the pedals. I think the sweet spot is somewhere between a nice group of high quality pedals and the Joe Bonamassa School of just plug it in and play. As far as this pedal goes, although I think everyone can benefit from a very good quality EQ pedal this one is probably overkill for most players. Also, the price puts it out of reach for the average player.
Pete; you've stated before that the most powerful "tone shaper" is our fingers. What changed? How come this pedal (whom the company paid you to review) is NOW the most powerful toneshaper? As a new guitarist; and certainly no where near your skills, I wonder how you could change your mind in 12 months time?? This whole "paid for" concept seems really dubious?
Fantastic demo Pete! You truly are a legend in the field!
Thanks so much!

love the Para EQ. nice demo Pete. all the best to you!
You had me at that 60s strat - my favorite guitar in your collection. Demo and song are both top notch (per usual)!!!
I own one now! Best tone shaper I have ever used! It’s just straight forward great design without any fancy stuff :)
I've had one of these for a few months, it lives in my FX loop for cutting mud, and the high-pass/low-pass. Always on. Great playing as always, Pete!!
Your playing, phrasing and chord choice is just so addictive! No-one else on RUclips cones close! Amazing stuff!
Great video! You’re a fantastic musician Pete!!
Thanks!

Outstanding. Thanks pete

Killer track!
A pedal like this would be so much more useful if it had the ability to save, store, and recall presets on the fly.
Well, you can save store and recall, you just have to do it using the app …
Does it have the same boofer as the older versions?
Nice pedal Tom Cruise
Nice!!
Nice John Frusciante / Dave Simpson vibe going on with the demo.
Any ParaEQ owners feel that it’s too fiddly for live use? Or is it quite quick to dial in on the fly?
