Woman Asks Shelter For Oldest, Most Overlooked Dog. Shelter Workers Left Lost For Words.
This doesn’t happen every day, in fact, it’s almost unheard of. A woman looking for a dog at a shelter opted for an entirely different approach to all the regular adopters.
And on July 24th, all the staff at Asheville Humane Society Adoption Center would shed tears of joy when Leslie Sacks came along.
Leslie had an unusual request. She would ask the shelter to see the oldest dog they had - even if it had medical conditions.
She was adamant that she wanted the dog that had been passed over for adoption time and time again, for any and all reasons. But what did Leslie do that was so unprecedented?

I rescue dogs all the time. Once I went to petsmart to get food for my other rescued dogs and I saw a skinny/boned/scared/blind dog, she was hiding in her little cage. All the other dogs were happily being adopted, I observed for a while this poor dog being ignored by everybody, I knew she needed someone special to step up, someone who could understand this neglected poor doggy, so I took her🥰 She sleeps in a cradle next to my bed in soft bed with blankets.😝

We once got a dog, Lizzie, from a shelter after her previous owners left her in a crate outside in the cold all night, because the dog was getting old and needed a little help up stairs. She was used to hopping on 2 legs to beg for food. After we got her, we ended that horrible tradition with her and she felt so relaxed and slept on her back, even during the day, for the last few years of her life. She had a great retirement.

Can you blame the shelters for irresponsible people that dump their pets because they have become inconvenient? They are trying to do what they can with the resourses they are given. If you don't like this situation, take action. Do more than pointing your finger at the problem. Support local no kill shelters, adopt don't shop, choose an over looked adult or special needs animals instead of the cute puppy that could charm anyone into taking them home.
I see many people that are ready with criticism yet reluctant with action. Each of us has the power to make a small difference.

And I'm doing everything I can to save it from the tortoise painful test today. You're putting through you're horrible people and under the when the last time I saw him. I had my house Ellie-proofed. She escaped within two hours. I chased her, she thought it a wonderful game. I returned home in tears. Ellie returned shortly thereafter. She was with me for 8 years. I went to a shelter with the intent of bringing home an old cat. When I saw this demoralized tabby in a glass enclosure I knew that I had to save him. The attendee hugged me and ask if I was sure, and without hesitation I said you betcha. This cat was 14 years old and I gave him the royal treatment. He was now able to have a new home where he could explore and then go outdoors to once again be free. He just passed away this April 8th, and he was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I hope I see him again one day when it's my time to move on.

      Atta❗️Girl ‼️
      C. S. Lewis suggests that the love of God that we have for & give to a beloved animal somehow “ennobles”
it & lifts it up from being simply a “beast of the field”. Why would there NOT be animals in Heaven?
(Jesus IS described as “riding a white horse”). Animals are part of our lives
( there MUST be Birdsong in Heaven…yeah? )
The Lord is good…true love is not limited & it doesn’t end.
It’s reasonable I think that we will indeed have our furry family with us in Heaven. If they aren’t there then I guess He will have to “wipe away our tears “ &
      memories of them….🤔
      NAH‼️. 😄
      They’re gonna be there‼️🥳😁🙏🏻✝️

Me too! 15 year old Snowy, with his cauliflower ear and ratty looks. "Lets go!" Snowy had a long letter with him. The owner was never home and Snowy was suffering from it. Well, what they didn't say was that Snowy dealt with his anxiety by constantly humping me. It was crazy. I had about 10 cats and 4 dogs at the time, and one day one of the cats was growling at a dog on the porch and snowy flew out there and came to her defense. He was crowned king of the house and began an new life of purpose, looking after his pride of cats. He never humped anymore, he was absolutely happy in his life and he made the rounds patroling his domain. One day I went out and he was laying in the driveway dead. He had just went for a sleep in the sun and crossed peacefully over. I know one thing, he had the best last year of his life he could have hoped for.

I did the same thing. I had my heart set on a puppy, until before walking out of the shelter I glanced to the last stall remaining until I went through the exit. I stopped dead in my tracks,.... I saw what looked to be ...a giant bear. The sign above said 4 year old Male American Bulldog Heart worm positive. He looked right into my eyes and he lit up immediately... I asked what his story was? They said he was really nice but really hyper.... I didn’t care, I knew no one else would take him and if I didn’t he would die. It’s been almost two years (he’s had treatment and was tested heart worm negative now,) he’s been by far the best dog I’ve ever had... and theee most lazy dog I’ve ever had in my life. He was only acting hyper because he was behind those bars. Now he’s content and happy. Best decision I’ve ever made in my life,

I'm 39 and I've been adopting senior dogs since 31. My childhood dog, Max, lived to 17 years. He was a senior longer than he was a young dog. I do what I do to honor him. Some of my adoptions made it a few years, some, only months. While it's emotionally crushing to lose a dog so frequently, I willingly carry that burden. If you could see what I've seen, how they go from scared or reclusive to owning a piece of your heart, you'd melt like me. The joy those dogs had at learning the simplest of things, where their bed is to where to find food and water, it made them so happy. All they want is to be somebody's dog. It's a gift anyone with love in their heart can give. Try it.

We adopted an 11 Year old Pug. His owners were moving abroad and had tried hard to find him a new home. Their efforts were in vain until we decided that he was old but not ill. He was grossly overweight. He’s now been with us for three months. He is back down to a reasonable weight, can walk up to nearly a mile and runs and gets excited again. He’s a happy wee old boy and we love him! ❤️❤️❤️

It’s such a blessing to have people like this around. My family just adopted a 4 year old Rottweiler who is the sweetest girl! She was in the shelter extremely underweight with fleas, ticks, & is heartworm positive. She was passed by so many people because she had issues already. However, she is going for treatment this week for her heartworms but her horrible condition broke my heart & we adopted her. She didn’t know how to eat a bone or play with toys & is terrified of thunder & loud noises. She now has no more fleas or ticks & is eating wonderfully though & hope her HW treatment goes well for her. It’s always amazing to rescue the ones who just need a loving soul to take care of them. ❤️

If u win the lottery u hire a competent vet hosp. mgr. to help u design, build & get operating an easy to get to, central, non-profit animal hospital & pet food bank (with everything donated, with cash $ donated for rent if req'd (or u put rest of yr winnings in good investments, get a financial advisor, use interest earnings etc to cover fixed expenses) + utilities, & salaried basic hosp. staff on site (but vets donate their time, 1/2 day every month or 2), with a ready ambulance, driver & at least a vet student in tow, to pick up injured animals as needed. Then poor ppl can enjoy pets too, & then pets they already have, a lot rescued, won't suffer when ill, or bec of age, bec owners just cannot afford vet bills. (e.g., I just had to hv my cat put down & got his ashes back = almost $700 CAN.) Hopefully a lot more animals will be adopted out of shelters & from the streets then, with a non-profit animal hosp avail. That's MY dream. Just wish I could afford more lotto tickets!!

What a beautiful story...i lost my 16yo chiuhauha the last dog i had that was linked to my father who passed 7 years ago. Chanel would wait for him on the days of my dads treatment at the hospital. She knew every Tues, Thursday, and Sat at 6pm he would return and listened for wheeltrans to drop him off. She would set herself up on the arm rest of his recliner and gaze out the window for him. She did this for about two years after my dad has passed because she was so devoted to my dad. So when she had passed our family felt the loss of my dad again and this time harder because we also lost Chanel our last pet connected to my dad...her being there gave us comfort. So in her honour i decided to adopt for the very first time because i knew there are older dogs out there that needed a forever home. I found a 3yo stray that had a rough story from Atlanta Georgia with tears in his ears and with severe bow legs. I instantly fell in love. I am from Toronto Canada and we drove quite a while to pick up this tiny dog across the border. He has been with us now for 3 years and he is now 6 yo. He is a blessing in our lives and i think moving forward i will always adopt because you can teach an old dog new tricks. They will love you back as much as if you had raised that dog from a pup. Please please everyone think of adoption and help these shelters that are way too crowded. Help save a life and adopt.😻👍❤💙💚💛💜

My sister did this. She went and asked for the cat that was there for the longest, and everyone was shocked. She ended up with a 7 year old, ex feral cat, who was extremely scared. She was there for over 430 days. She got her over 2 months ago, and still hides under the bed. A month after adopting her, she went back and got a 13 year old senior, who had rotting teeth, oozing skin on his hips, and arthritis. He was there for year. He was a living in a massive colony for most of his life, and is a great great great grandfather. This could be his very first home. Both cats are still hiding under the bed together.

So happy that San Francisco has an amazing shelter named Muttville that only takes in senior dogs (and a majority have special needs). They take in dogs from the other shelters in the area to make sure seniors (7 and up) have the special needs and attention they need. Other states should do the same!
We have loved all the seniors and hospice dogs we’ve cared for through them. ♥️

What wonderful people there are in this sin-filled world. May God Bless each and every one of you who have taken in these sweet old darlings with nowhere to go and loved thrm without hesitation.
I have a feral, 5 years now, who is my boss, but she adores me and I her. I would have more but being 85 is a little old to start adopting. Besides, Queenie would be jealous.
      God Bless Everyone
