Volume 5: "Back to the fairytale, back to the show"
Laven I think that's just implying that the good times are coming back, even if all hell is breaking loose around them they are moving forward after V3. I may be wrong but that's my initial thought.
Laven I took it as “We’re going to bring back the good times, where the heroes win and villains fail, we’re getting back on track.”
We need the full song to be released before we can really get into analyzing it.
Laven I just thought of it as a synonym for “back to the show” because the idea of RWBY itself is, to be put simply, a fairytale. So when they say “back to the fairytale, back to the show” they’re really saying “back to the story, back to the show” or something along the lines of “back to this fandom people can escape to and have fun talking about, back to the show that so many people have waited on” y’know?

5:34 I would have to disagree on the contradiction. What i got from that is, even if you lose, if all your faith is gone, you suck it up and start over. The key word for me is 'battle'. Like the saying goes 'they may have won the battle, but they'll lose the war'.

I feel like if I described this song to someone they'd ask me how I ignore the tone whip lash, and that's what makes the song a miracle. I want to cry tears of sadness and tears of joy all at the same time.

Part of why I love it so much. The lyrics are so somber but the instrumentation is a giant middle finger to all the crap that can go on in our lives and then the chorus just solidifies that...and ugh typing that out made me tear up a bit, I love this song so much.

I don't think think that part is contracting itself. As someone who has gone into and out of depression twice, I've learned that in order to survive... hope is meaningless. Yes, it is something we need to cling to, but once you go as low as you can, when everything seems to not be worth the effort, when you think life has nothing good offer anymore, when there is no hope left at all... the only thing you can do is just live and move forward. You can overcome anything if only you just live. Even if you question the point of living; there is no point. We have to just live, because. if you keep moving forward instead of letting your sorrow consume you, verything else will eventually be sorted out.
You should do Cold next as the song has at least 2 meanings and perspectives

I took the contradiction as: All hope is gone, everything sucks, you have nothing to live for... so just live for living's sake

Hearing them talk about how their life seems to have turned into a tragedy made me think of something: Most of the Greek myths featuring heroes *were* tragedies, with the hero typically failing some personal goal of theirs and then dying at the end. And then we have Pyrrah, whose story ended when she failed to stop Cinder from taking Amber's power and was then killed by Cinder, a tragic ending if there ever was one. Makes wonder if part of the reason they based Pyrrah off of a Greek hero (Achilles) is because her personal story was always going to be a tragedy.
I think there's another thing in that song. It speaks about loss, sorrow and depression and tells us to move on in a positive way. But what if it's not that positive, but imperative, mandatory? Our characters live on Remnant, a world on which monsters are attracted by people having bad feelings.
We can understand that song as "Let's not put others in danger by our sadness."

I think it's wrong to say this is a general song that could apply to most of the cast. It seems like it's specifically from Ruby's perspective. She was always considered the most naive and innocent, so the idea that life isn't "Like a fairytale" would be more important to Ruby's story than anyone else's. The song is all about Ruby's boundless optimism and despite how much pain and sorrow she's been through she refuses to let it get to her. Even the slower part is reflective of the low parts she's shown in the season. So while this could be seen as a general song about the show, it makes more sense that it be about Ruby moving forward as the hero she always wanted to be; but now armed with the knowledge life isn't a simple as she thought it was at the beginning of the series. She isn't going to ignore the darker side of life, but she's going to focus on making the world better.
I like how it says it turned out that life was far less than a bedtime story, yet the plot ended up being about a bedtime story with Maidens and shit.
I think the word nothing refers to the individual. if I feel I have nothing left to lose don't mean I don't have nothing worth fighting for

I like the idea that it's based on how the creators of RWBY feel about Monty's passing.
Despite how upset they are, they know that they must keep going on, and that it's what he would want.
This song absolutely broke me when the full version released.
When I first heard this song, an online friend of mine died from cancer hours later.
The slow part of the song when it came out hit me hard, made me remember my parents passing away. But it's true, we all must keep moving on.

As putting it into a real life perspective, it's the CRWBY after Monty's Passing, knowing that they have to move on as they must finish what Monty had started, they aren't there yet, so they're going to move on and fulfill the story.

Well now that you've analyzed all the openings so far (at least until the full version of Triumph comes out), I was wondering if now you can analyze the lyrics to Gold from the Volume 1 Soundtrack? (since we just heard it recently in the OST of Chapter 6 in Volume 5)
While perhaps not my favorite opening song, I certainly respect it more knowing more about it. It's hard to remind myself that Monty died. But his messages before always seem to inspire in ways I can't fathom. Volume 3 is hard to look at even now, and I think that speaks volumes to the show and it's writers. Coming right after harsh tragedy of their own, they made something that is still beautiful to behold. And above all else, they keep Monty's themes of hope ever present.
It's 2018 and we still haven't gotten over Pyrrha.

I'll be honest, I only really started to fall for this song after I heard the full version, specifically 5:56 onwards purely for the lyrics that reminded... pretty sure all of us, of Monty. Always hits hard.

It pretty much is self explanatory. It's the theme song for Doctor Merlot, the main antagonist in the RWBY Grimm Eclipse game. (Which BTW is canon. Haha) It basically explains his whole reason and goals which cause the game's main plot.

I honestly thought it was from the perspective of Ruby who is just trying to move forward as she was the one who was wanted to be a huntress because of the heroes in stories. But your reasoning makes sense too.
They all may have had different reason for being there, but when they started in season 1, they were all still kids with the overall optimistic bedtime story idea of what it meant to b a hunter. Blake might have been the only one of the group who had a more realistic idea of the world, but in also trying to bury her past, she also got cot up in the youthful optimism and fun of the others.

"When are faith is gone and nothing left to lose." I think this song can also apply to the revelation that there is no way to defeat Salem. "Some dreams can't come true" (ozpins dream of returning humanity to the way it was). Perhaps their really is no way to defeat her/ judgement shouldn't be up to the gods, they will "just live".
"Let's live, and laugh, and love, Let's just live". The songs solution is is to just live life in a way in which expresses some of the most common things that represent humanity, love and humor. Perhaps, the series will come to a point where they are just going to have to let humanity be judged, and the basic ways in which happiness is expressed is what will decide judgment overriding the evil of Salem.
It could also be that Salem herself needs to learn these things, and then humanity can be judged.
Or in the end there will be no judgement and everyone will "just live" and salem decides to just live, and that was actually the secret judgment.

Great analysis, everything I feel when I listen to this song put into a video. This song means so much to me, it just hits me with so many feels and is pretty much my mindset for living life and the fact that the lyrics are so meaningful set to such a rocking backtrack...ugh, I just love it so much. I took a hiatus from RWBY and binged volumes 4 and 5 recently and ugh this is my favorite OP hands down.

I'd love to hear your explanation on Bad Luck Charm. Mainly since you don't think Qrow is Ruby's father but also because Qrow is my favorite character. I feel like the song is Qrow talking to Summer.
Wow, you've made a REALLY fantastic point on how the depth from the songs was way more than it appeared.
I really didn't consider how we KNEW they were based on children's fairy tale's, and the "grim" future that's come from the chaos.
The song sums up vol 4's themes of moving on beyond tragedy well, but personally, i think it's an anthem for rooster teeth after Monty's passing. Finding the strength to move on from great loss and find a new way. Vol 4 and 5 were deeply flawed, 6 was somewhat better, but i think these latter day RWBY volumes, like them or not, are kind of reflective of rooster teeth themselves after mourning Monty..., wounded and weakened, but trying to gain perspective, moving outwards and onwards to find new light.
After I watched this video I want to watch rwby again. I love that series 10/10 r.i.p Monty Oum every fan will miss you.
I like to think when they saw let’s just live when the war is done and they’ve lost everything, live so you can find something new to live for, because if you just lost everything does that mean that you should give up? No! Keep going and make/find new things to live for! At least that’s what I like to take from it.

I almost started to cry, my eyes definitely started watering up, whenever I think about rwby as a whole and Monty it hurts the nistolga and what this show is to me come at me and makes me want to bawl out and cry, durring the end of this video it was getting harder and harder to hold back these tears, this song is about the characters we watch grow since I was 12/13 and with Monty passing, it just hurts more and don't want this show to end anytime soon

I actually agree with most of whatEruptionFang is saying however I thought it was kind of a Ruby song again or just atleast from her perepective because she's always the optimistic one and seeing what she said as well in Necessary Sacrifice, I think that it basically reiterates this song, so she's basically saying, we've had a lot of bad things happen, we've lost people, friends, but they can still carry on with their lives, they can move forward still knowing that who was lost is still remembered and who had shit happend can find the light through the dark times cos no one should be able to keep them their, only themselves and if they try hard enough they'll be able to push through
