  • Hey cockatiel & conure lovers!
    In today's video I welcome Dr Jason Crean back to the channel along with Sophie (BirdNerdSophie) to discuss an important issue relating to how we interact with and look after our parrots: Anthropomorphism.
    Anthropomorphism can be a big barrier when it comes to understanding our parrots and their behaviour. It's something we all do at times and it's so important to recognise and realise it.
    The video is divided into various subtopics such as diet, behaviour, cages, out of cage time etc.
    Remember, this video is about how we act towards and our parrots and work to understand them. We are in no way saying that parrots do not have feelings. It's more that they have their own set of feelings and emotional reactions based on how they have evolved.

    I enjoy talking to my Conure like " I'm coming , making food for you..ok, ok." When I leave every morning, I tell him "I'll be back soon." I make a pouch to carry him around, like washing my face n putting on my make up. He's used to me and my facial masks..lol.. as he goes to sleep. It's a marvelous time we have together.

      It can be so amazing the fun we have with our conures. They are such charming little monsters. I often talk to all of our parrots. They may not understand what I mean, but they seem to enjoy the vocalisation.

    Somewhat related. When I leave the house, I always tell Sky I love her and I'll be back shortly. I know she doesn't understand. I do it for myself more than anything else. All pet owners do the same thing.

    Such a great discussion! It’s a interesting subject. I really try to learn my parrots natural behaviours through constant research and learning from awesome people like all of you, so that I can have the privilege of watching and interacting with them as parrots, I don’t always get it right but I love learning to try.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 года назад +1

      That's what's so important! Always striving to learn and improve. We are exactly the same!
      Also you're capable of contributing to all of this just by observing your flock and learning by interacting with them. I first encountered conures and lorikeets well... (a long while ago now lets not go there lol) and I learned lots then. BUT I've learned so much more now having them at home and rehabilitating them as rescues.

    Great discussion. Speaking of anthropormism - I don’t know the word for the human equivalent (furry? Lol) of trying to identify with birds too much, but I once actually took a bite of millet to try to find out why the birds went so crazy for it. Turns out it’s not delicious for humans 😂 which really speaks to the difference in animals (especially birds) and humans and how we can’t assume that we are the same.
    Edit: I’m aware that there are recipes for millet for humans, and cultures that have it as a staple in their diet, and I’m sure it’s delish. But I’m not going to freak out for it as if it’s a hot fudge sundae

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 года назад +1

      This is a top comment if I ever saw one lol
      I've tried some of their dried bits myself on occasion too, especially the fruits and veggies for fun! Not millet though! Can imagine it'd be a bit gross!
      I also prefer the fudge sundae! (The birds have a much healthier diet than us lol)

      Hey Lori,
      Generally dehydrated isn't the best when it comes to meal worms. You end up with just dried husk which may be fun to crunch has no nutritional value. I know you can get freeze dried ones in the US though!

    I have a trapeze in my cockatiel cage. It’s 4 plastic chains connected to the corners of a sea grass mat. He sleeps on it every night. He’s a male and is very hormonal with all of his toys. Holding on to the toy with his left foot and rubbing on the perch etc. The trapeze is all open but he is snug in it.
    He is not biting or aggressive.,
    Is the trapeze making him extra hormonal??? Should I take it out at night?? Thank you for ur advice.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 года назад +3

      Hey Maria,
      It is possible it is contributing. The fact it's open is better than the cozy huts, but if it's enclosed in any way even just corners it could be an issue. I'd trial removing it and see if you notice any improvement.
      Generally it's always best that our parrots sleep on a high up branch/perch as it's the most natural way for them.
      It could also be worth looking at if any other things are contributing to his hormones!

      it's unusual for a conure to be totally silent. Have you literally just got them? If so they may be nervous/settling in.

    My male cockatiel is jealous to female cockatiel. Female is 8months and male is 5.they aren't not fighting. He chase her around with his heart shape wings. Why? They were good friends. Why he's doing this

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 года назад +3

      Hey there,
      So your male isn't actually jealous of your female. The behaviour you're describing there is displaying! He's basically showing off to her. This may become mating or hormonal in the future, so it's worth keeping an eye on.
      But, right now he's just being a pest and wanting to be near her/impress her!
