Experts slugfest: Breaking down the chaotic 2023 Emmy nominations

- Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng discuss the 75th Emmy Awards nominations and all the snubs and surprises (who had "Welcome to Chippendales" getting four acting nominations?). "Succession" predictably dominated with 27 nominations, but its HBO mates "The Last of Us" (24) and "The White Lotus" (23) were close behind. "Ted Lasso" also ruled with 21 bids, while "The Bear" made its Emmy debut with 13. But "Abbott Elementary" underperform with just eight, including a major snub in a category that it won last year. Plus: We discuss the where you could see the impact of the restricted ballot and where it didn't matter at all (basically every drama acting category).

So happy for Phil Dunster!
Horrified about no nominations for Elizabeth Olson and everyone in house of the dragon!
Thrilled about Jury Duty, House of the Dragon (show) and the Last of Us.
I predicted it was going to be all white lotus and succession. At least with succession ending and maisel, Saul and Barry, we will finally have some new stuff next year.
I know people thought it was crazy to not have HOTD predicted in series, but with how Bad Sisters got in for writing, directing, and casting it definitely wasn't out of left field to put them in drama. they truly must've been in that 9th slot.
Thanks, Joyce, for noticing that Cinco Paul, who won the Emmy last year for Original Music & Lyrics for ''Schmigadoon!,'' didn't even rate a nomination this year, which is crazy. Paul wrote MORE songs for Season 2, and I'd argue that his new parodies were even better and wittier and worthier of Emmy recognition. ''Schmigadoon!'' is a musical-theater treat that features Broadway stars and rates 97% at Rotten Tomatoes, but its stellar songwriting is overlooked by the Emmys. Sad!
Yeah for Phil Dunster! I’m so happy for him ❤❤
They did Jesse Eisenberg so dirty, they clearly liked Fleishman and he is by far the biggest presence in the show and yet he's like the only big part that isn't nominated and then putting in non-series nominated shows over him as well. Bit bitter about that one ngl.
So nice to see you guys growing its audience! Keep going and hi from Sweden :)
I’m so happy about will sharpe
Obi Wan took the spot of Black Bird / A Small Light.
Hard G on gif, Chris. It's a Mad Men graphic, not a peanut butter.
spicy Joyce today! Harrison Ford was robbed!
Have only watched the first two episodes but he should have been nominated for sure. They’re just obsessed with Ted Lasso
Y’all keep underestimating Angela. She is going to get this Emmy.
I feel another ballot revamping coming. Limiting a show to two nominees per category. Two shows having all eight nomination slots in one category is absurd. That change would give more actors a chance and get more shows in. The academy is lazy af! Apparently there are only about five shows on tv. I guess there will be no drama category next year.
@@manantial773 we’ll see. The current nomination ballot is new.
@@manantial773in an era where there is more tv than ever, it seems lazy.
Sad about Sarah Goldberg, Imelda Staunton, Diego Luna, and "Somebody Somewhere." Glad about "Andor," Phil Dunster, Keri Russell and "Jury Duty." Otherwise, sorta kinda business as usual. As always, youse twose are the berries. More, please, thank you.
I want to Murder whoever changed comedy actor and actress to just five nominations. That’s the first time that happened since 2008 and there are way more deserving actors now.
The number of slots depends on the number of submissions, there were not enough submissions to get the 6th spot.
@@luisanaya6123 So Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult couldn’t submit?
@t221000 the way it works. This is just an example, cause I don't know the numbers off the top of my head.
If the number of submissions were under 70 (using this as an example), then there are only 5 nominees. 71-80 then 6 nominees (again, just as an example)
Elle and Nicholas did enter.
@@Awardshq I hate these rule changes when we are at peak tv 📺 and need 6 nominees at minimum
@@t221000 I think it should start at 6 and go up to 8 max.
I’m certain Comedy Actress will be Quinta Brunson or Jenna Ortega
@manantial773 Here’s my analysis. Christina was great, but I don’t see her winning when she was the ONLY nomination for her show. Marvelous Mrs Maisel had its run I think. Natasha Lyonne has a little bit of a shot but her show underperformed as well
These two have the best case
most of these nominations were horrendous, not even the oscars upset that much
@@manantial773 for your low standards maybe
It was truly like they just voted randomly for whoever was in the ballot aside from succession and the white lotus
