+James Ball Thanks James! I wish someone had explained it to ME like this when I first played a tune with Rhythm Changes (It was Apple Honey by Woody Herman.) It took me years to put it in context! Good luck w/ your jazz playing :)
Good luck with your jazz playing, Jack! Rhythm Changes are a very important part of the jazz tradition and I'm glad this video is helping you gain an overview of them.
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 Yes it helped me because you told me to be glad of what jazz I can play and just try to evolve bit by bit.I can play the standards as written but now adding small extra bits of my own.stay safe thanx
I'm glad this helps, Franky. Rhythm Changes can be a little difficult to understand at first, so the historical and musical relationships can be useful. Good luck!
Yep! As other folks have mentioned, this is just a great explanation and presentation. Thank you! Also, I really dig hearing you play. It's clear you are having fun!
Thanks, Frederic, I'm glad you liked this lesson! It's really more based on improvising around the chords than just using scales. Each chord will suggest melodic possibilities in a very fluid way.
I hoped you could reveal the secret simple formula to become a jazz ninja in 3 minutes, but I guess I will have to work a little to find it by myself. ;-)
That's the best thing I've heard anyone say all week, Frederic! OK - here's the secret: Play much simpler than you think you should, but do it with rhythmic variety. Learn to do that, and you'll sound 10x as good!!!
Hi Rachel. Rhythm Changes aren't blues, since it's a different chord progression. And they're only in major keys. Check out the song I Got Rhythm by George Gershwin to hear the original.
+troy low Thanks, Troy! It took me a long time to learn how to play like that :) I practiced Rhythm Changes at very slow tempos a lot, and in all 12 keys!

Could you give an example of rhythm changes which is neither Bebop nor blues, at a moderate tempo and minor ? From a more recent style than swing.

@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 thanks for answering. I meant not using blues scale. So there are no recent creations. Just traditional. Good video.
