Yes, Táiwān is the keystone to preventing unchallengeable CPC expansion and keeping watch over PLA naval movements into open ocean (especially the nuclear-armed submarines). Táiwān is also the China with whom America fought with to stop imperialism, first by the Japanese, and now by the Communists.
Really the only way for America to not intervene is if Táiwān itself votes to reunify with the Mainland, and the "stability"-seeking Party has done a bang up job making China overall toxic to associate with.

To say that Taiwanese purchase of the 400 harpoon missiles is an "investment" is a joke. The purchase of missiles from US gave no inherent advancement to Taiwan's capability in its own missile and rocket development technology, not only that US conveniently always only approve sales of defense technology when Taiwan's own Defense related Research Institute were on the verge of breakthrough in their own defense technology. Doing so the Taiwanese would have to bend to US pressure, forcing a military sales and cut in the budget of Taiwan development of their own technology. This creates a long-term reliance on US for defense and leaves no funding for own research in defense technology. For now there are many countries stuck in the same situation like Taiwan, feeling pressured by a rising China defense and military presence many countries felt like being a "Guard Dog" for US while still being ask to paid protection fees.

People should go through as much pain to buy a gun like a country needs to buy a missile, would be a much safer world. The world agrees to not sell missiles to countries that are unstable

They aren’t really making that much money lol. If you track the stock prices of LMT , NOC, RTX, BA it’s really nothing special, even in wartime. And the dividends aren’t anything special either. It’s an interesting narrative I guess but I went a while ago looking into this topic as a great no brainer investment and it turns out to not be true
