  • Continuation of the Clifford Brown Education Series. This solo is from a live recording at Carnegie Hall...Brownie Lives: Live at Basin Street and in Concert at Carnegie Hall. I talk about the importance of reinforcing control and balance in the practice room and translating that feel to the bandstand. On this day in 1955, Clifford & Max Roach recorded this song live at Carnegie Hall. Feel free to post any questions or comments!

I feel elated to hear and see how much you respect and honored my uncle through this video series. I also had NO IDEA that he played at CARNEGIE HALL...!!! I've never even heard ANY family members talk about that so I guess they didn't know either. Thank you so much for this wonderful piece of information and further insight into the GENIUS of my uncle Clifford. Wow!!!

Dominick! This is one of my favorite live Clifford solos and it's incredibly clear how much work you've put in digging deep into this and every other Brownie solo that you've shared with all of us over the years. I know we haven't met but you've played with some of my brothers during my undergrad years at UNF like Christian Tamburr, Billy Thornton, Scott Giddens, and a few others. Would love to get to hang sometime and pick your brain! Much love and thanks so much for sharing your love and deep knowledge of our music with the world!!!!!!!!!

Is the transcription of this available anywhere, or possibly from you? I've got transcriptions of 2 other versions of Daahoud Clifford played on other recordings, would love to have a copy of this one, even though I'm a bit lazy to do it myself, not sure if I'm even capable. Love the way you compared both Nat Adderley and Clifford's articuiations, a lot to learn here. very well presented! Any advice on speeding up single tonguing, besides lightening up, Clarke Studies, I'm experimenting with du-dul (aka doodle) tonguing and getting some positive results, your Clifford. Brown video was also helpful in that regard?

Even your "slow" was too fast to write down - took me well over an hour - repeated 6:21 100x. It is cool as many songs come to mind as I practice this lick, so I run all over those notes that make up the lick then go into the songs like Nica's Dream and My Bier Mistu Shein as they come to mind.
Had some fun, thanks - I ain't dead yet. ciao.

HI, Great clip on CB music style.
Myself remember Joy Spring on that famus EP rec in the 50th.
Myself, Old guy now, like CB style, byt all C Bakers recordings became
trumpet style in my playing, melodic not so tecnical.
You are Great, Keep Swinging/ Johnny D Bergh

Clifford Brown is extremely melodic, technical ability is part of this music! But of course someone had to mention CB who is a wine bar player at best. What people like you call melodic, is a player who has limited ability on their instrument...Getz is a prime example.

What's with all the grunting? Not trying to be a dick, just wondering if any teacher addressed that with you. To me it indicates you are closing your throat. I've been studying Clifford since I was 15 y/o back in 1982 He was such a genius and left us with so much material for a guy that died at 26. Thank you for covering this topic and I look forward to hearing more .. very nice playing. Merry Christmas!
Maybe soften your articulation a bit. It could he the mic set up but it comes across a little harsh. Go 'n get it son!
