This was actually foreshadowed in Super, aaaall the way in episode 5. It’s one of the only differences from the movie version of Battle of Gods. When Goku is charging in to attack Beerus, Goku dodged right before Beerus even started attacking him, stating that his body moved on its own.
And the concept of ultra instinct can be arguablly said to have been foreshadowed all the way in original Dragon ball.

I wish I was there to see these episodes when they originally aired in Japan. I can only imagine how much everyone lost their absolute shit when this happened. Even watching this again now, the episodes have a lot to like, but my favorite part is their initial clash before Goku takes the Spirit Bomb L. It’s such tonal whiplash going from Ribrianne to a fight with Jiren where Goku’s being absolutely ragdolled

From this point onwards, the entire tournament is going to have many incredible moments. There were already a few like master roshi against universe 4 and frieza eliminating frost and a few others but now it’s going to be an incredible amount of great moments. Also, universes are going to start being eliminated again. At this point, only 2 were erased I’m pretty sure

Goku achieves this state by breaking his "self-limiting shells" (his limitations) and tapping into the deeper potential within. In the anime Goku awaken through resisting an exceptionally powerful attack like the Spirit Bomb, while in the manga it is the culmination of all of Goku's martial arts training by various masters which was Korin, Kami, King Kai, and Whis. Initially once he awaken the form moments in the manga, he was about to fight Jiren, the form quickly faded.
Ever since he started playing kakarot i was patiently waiting for him to see ultra instinct goku and broly movie
In the future i highly recommend listening to the Japanese version of "Ultimate battle" (the song that plays when goku first transforms and fights Jiren). The English dub of it is alright. But the original has so much more hype and energy to it.

Yeah Ultra Instinct is basically the "your body reacting to things on its own without wasting time having your brain tell it" that Whis talked about back in the Golden Frieza arc. They say its only a state of mind but clearly its a powerup in mortals since Goku's attacks are actually hurting Jiren now when before he was literally able to just tank everything without a scratch
No, it's only a transformation because of the spirit bomb.
UI by itself is just a technique, has nothing to do with power.
goku's body created the sign and silver haired forms in order to use ultra instinct as limit-breakers, that's what gives him the power-ups, if he just used the technique without powering up it probably wouldn't increase anything besides reactions and attacks

Man I'll never forget watching this for the first time. I had all my best Buds over at my house in my theater room. We had the full surround sound system on and a giant TV screaming at the TV jumping all around the room and still could barely hear what was going on we were so hyped up. Absolutely God tier part one of my personal favorite tournament arcs in any anime.

13:57 btw, the name of this song is Ultimate Battle, and this version is actually controversial, a lot people don't like the english version compared to the original japanese, which the vocals are more "Heavy Metal-ish" compared to the dub.
This, I highly recommend giving a listen to the original version by Akira Kushida. He was around 70 years old at the moment he released this song btw!
IMO the only dub version comes close to that one is the Brazilian Portuguese one by Bruno Sutter.

I had a huge gripe with chris sabats studio that funimation hires for dragonball dubbing and music production because they chose a shitty artist for the song for ultra instinct when around the same time an artist with a much better vocal range caleb hyles had a far better cover and it fit the emotions of the tournament far better. I also had a bit of a gripe with nate wants to battle doing the intro even though it's not as bad cuz jonathan young did a much better more appropriate dub of the limitbreak x survivor cover than him that fits the dragonball style alot more or even caleb hyles cover of the japanese version. But it is what it is ig.

Overall I’m a bigger one piece fan, even though I’ve been a dragonball fan a lot longer, but I was more excited for UI and MUI than I was for G5. This was the first time I was peak excitement watching Super.
