I was in the market for a G1 Optimus replica, and Missing Link was way too expensive for my blood. I had hopes for this one, until I saw the price. Nope nope nope. So I preordered the United one. Seeing the price of this thing, especially converted to US dollars, yeah that thing ain't worth 80-90 bucks. Alot of the collab figures aren't great, but examples like Gigawatt, Ectotron, and the Jurassic Park 2 pack show they can definitely be good. this is why I always give chrome parts a coat of floor polish for anyone unfamiliar, Pledge with Future Shine is a floor polish that is basically liquid acrylic - it makes a great high-gloss varnish and can be used to tighten joints
As a Hot Wheels fan, I can say that the tampo work looks about par for the course. For mainline casting. As someone who owns a few of the premium offerings, hearing about the issues is a huge turnoff outside the price.
To Bandai's credit, PB tends to multiple print runs for popular items. Anything that immediately sells out on pre-order will almost always get another pre-order right away with a later release date.
The type of transformers hotwheels toy I remember the most is Robowheels. Even managed to track a copy of the one I had when I was a kid, still in package, though sadly the hip joint was broken. Good news is that it didn't effect the vehicle mode stability. Also, World's smallest Prime is about the size of a 1/144 truck and Earthrise Sky Lynx is about 1/139 (Based on Lazy Eyebrow scale chart) so actually very close in scale, and is about what they would likely look like in sized to each other and with the usual gundam kits.. Sky Lynx is BIG.
Damn, this was kind of eye-opening for me. I was almost tempted to get this on the aftermarket just so I could have my Missing Link Convoy carry a smaller version of himself in his trailer, but seeing how balked the QC was on your copy...yeah, maybe I'll just hunt down the Core class instead. Or maybe that Newage Optimus you have here - I've been meaning to get into 3rd party for a while, and I'm liking the toy stylings. To answer your end of video question, I think my favourite 'collaborative' figure I've seen so far is the JAXA Lunar Cruiser Optimus Prime. Haven't handled it myself, nor have I handled any other collaborative figures, but I've seen a review on it and it looks great. That being said, I also kinda wanna hunt down some of the weirder ones too. Those Nike shoe Transformers look horrible to handle with all their kibble everywhere, but they're also some of the funniest things I've ever seen.
This toy is actually sold through the same place as the Red Line collectors' club which means it's scalped to HELL by bots and ten times more expensive if you want to get it somewhere else. And iirc the toy is actually painted with this special "spectraflame" paintjob which is also seen on both RLC And original Hot Wheels cars from 1968 which is a transparent paint that required a smooth metal surface to work its magic. Also, I am waiting for hasbro to make a transformer based on hot wheeels' classic castings such as twin mill or rodger dodger.
Hot Wheels Optimus is one of those cases where the figure should be a slam dunk of a release, and yet didn't. Charging around the same price as missing link for a smaller vanilla g1 prime with no trailer is one thing. But then you take into account the artificial scarcity that lead to mass scalping - and the rush to release leading to possible qc issues - and you have a figure that most people just laughed at (At least that the impression I got from Twitter.). Categorically I can't call it bad, but I also can't say I think it's good, at least in regards to what you had to pay originally, and definitely in regards to its after market prices.
Yee it's often called "world's smallest" by the fandom, but Takara never once referred to it as that. Only third party figures meant for the same scale did.
I am still to this day frustrated but the lack of anything really cool from the Takara Bandai collab; my ideal would have been four figures; a Masterpiece Jetfire and Zeta Gundam from Takara, and a Master Grade Optimus Prime and Megatron from Bandai. Yeah, I know that's a bit weighted toward Transformers over Gundam; but like the good Doctor showed, we haven't gotten a good update on the G1 Jetfire TOY ever, because of the mess of licenses around it. As for the other figures, I've always been interested in seeing what a high-end transforming Gundam figure would be like made by Takara. The MG Prime/Megs are kind of obvious, but considering some of the stuff Bandai's pulled off at the MG price point, I'd be excited by the prospect of what they could do with those characters.
Actually got this from Mattel. Never removing it from the box. Had it signed by Peter Cullen. This wasn't something Mattel expected you to play with. They knew people were going to over inflate the value of them from minute one.
16:20 as a collector of Halo Mega Construx, I am all too familiar with this Back in August, they rereleased a sought-after set based on Halo Reach. It sold out within 2 minutes. 3 at most. Yeah.
Now I'm curious if this collaboration would've gone over better if they went the other way. In other words, having Hasbro take a selection of Hot Wheels cars and find a way to redesign them as Transformers. Something to ponder, I suppose.
I started watching this with no intention whatsoever of buying it, merely because I enjoy (and somewhat relate to) how worked up you get about Transformers. I thought this was a Hot Wheels non transforming so under $10. When I realized what I really was I went up to $20, with awareness that it was probably $40. When you got to the actual price I was offended on every possible level. As a Dad who has previously explored Mattel’s online presence as I debated what toy lines to go hard on for my kid, I heartily agree about your “HasbroPulse are almost saints” comment. Great entertaining vid about something I will never buy. Legacy Wheeljack forever!
I feel like the missing link style folding fists would've helped this thing to no end, something about the uncompromising reference to the g1 figure mixed with the scale really perturbs me
When this was first announced I thought, huh, that's neat. Which quickly changed to "you are out of your goddamn mind" the moment I saw the price lmao.
... fully diecast metal, fully chrome, produced in limited quantities and paying a hefty licensing fee to Hasbro... ...I don't think that's feasible.m.
I'd love to have a G1 version of Prime to display on my shelf. And that chrome is wonderful. But that AUD price just kills it. We got enough bs to worry about financially here it's at a point I'm shocked no one realises that's why I hate when artificial scarcity or even FOMO is used by companies. It's unfair for the consumers who have no means to get something as soon as possible, taking away all the fun in the product and turning them away from it instead. It's a sure fire way to slowly loose your consumer-base when your marketing is blantantly predatory.
16:52 yeah, I really don’t get why this exists, as it isn’t accurate to any iteration of Beetle Bee, but with that said, I really like the looks of the Crosshairs, Barricade, and Stinger that’s releasing within that line-up.
I am both a HotWheels fan and Transformers fan. They’ve something I’ve collected both of for years, so upon hearing of this figure, I really wanted it, and was super close to purchasing it, but unfortunately I was working when it went live, so I had no chance in getting it. I still really want the thing but am not willing to pay scalper prices for it, so there goes that. It’s the same reason why I can’t collect a lot from my favorite movies, HotWheels Acceleracers, because the cars are too expensive and they stopped being sold years ago. But if you think this was bad, this is NOTHING. Just wait until you hear about the recent Acceleracers Teku Deora II debacle. That was awful. And also, I think it’s funny how they did the exact opposite of what I was hoping for with this crossover. I really want a transformer that transforms into the Acceleracers Deora II.
I wanted this when I saw it, the child in me wanted tiny g1 transformers made of metal ever since I learned of WST; imaging hot wheel sized transformers with a bit more complexity than the RiD spychanger scourge I got as a kid, but to glance at the price tag of $80?! Mattel.. Christ, no! There’s a reason I stopped buying a RLC membership this year.. I would LOVE this little guy, but the artificial scarcity, the obscene price, I just can’t, man.
Yeah honestly if this figure was a full sized chromed out G1 prime, then I maybe would have been fine with it. But no… because it’s so tiny and the price, that really makes it not worth it. Especially with the legacy and SS86 figures coming up. It’s a cool idea, and a good figure… but it’s such huge shame that such a beautiful chrome finish wasn’t used for a full sized G1 prime.
As someone who F$%&ing **HATES** P-Bandai with a burning passion, it breaks my heart to know that western companies are adopting this accursed method of "selling" figures as well. No company anywhere in the world should be permitted to take advantage of artificial scarcity to empower scalpers on **purpose.**
@@DrLockdown Also, Hasbro Pulse usually restocks and also puts figures on sale when they don't sell (Powerlinx Hotshot went on for nearly $15 USD at one point). P-Bandai? Miss the window *once* (because bots bought everything within 2 minutes of the window opening) and your only option is Ebay, which typically sells kits for double to triple.
Loving the Timelines Ramjet for "Toy you wonder how you get for so cheap" Timelines is such a treasure trove of figures that should be rare and expensive as hell but no one knows about and no one cares about
@DrLockdown I got Timelines Circuit cause he's the only recolor of RoTF Lockdown that I could find and I could get Circuits sealed for cheaper than some listings of a used Lockdown figure
I hate that they knew people would try to buy both this and the track fleet version to see if you can give him the trailer so they purposefully made it to where the trailer doesn’t disconnect from the track fleet truck
Yeah, I get exclusivity and stuff but... given you could get one of the variants of Newage's Prime for a similar price (a truly PHENOMENAL little figure) I just... could never justify this.
Hey I hear that Super Metroid music. Dr Lockdown has great taste. Artificial scarcity sucks. I can kinda understand it with some physical products (though it's often way too small a number) but I've seen it happen with digital products as well which is asinine. Add in the fact that bots are used to buy things instantly (should be illegal if you ask me) and it becomes too easy to miss out on stuff. Such a shame about the price. I'm one of those Transformers collectors that wants like a million Optimus so I wanted to get this one too. For me though this figure would be 110 canadian dollars before shipping. Add in the problems shown here and it's just not worth it. With a little more money I can buy a Commander. I'm with you on small Transformers. While I didn't buy many of them I adored Legacy's Core Class figures. I'm crushed they're going away.
Favorite TF Collab? Only ones i have are Gigawatt and Frankentron, and they're both fun, so I can't pick a favorite tho, a piece of Gigawatts chest broke off because some genius thought the piece that you have to press on one end to flip it around should be made with clear plastic. It'll hold in place since only one side snapped off, but the fact it snapped in the first place is annoying
The Macross VF-1S and G1 jetfire issue has nothing to do with takara and Bandai issues but more to do with harmony gold USA being the shittiest company and abusing a copyright loophole for decades as they own the distribution rights to the original Macross series outside of Japan and refuse to let go making false promises every 3 years to make more cheap junk that breaks rather than let the series go and allow for more people to enjoy the series I love so much and I love when we get homages with jetfire like the thrilling 30 battle mask on jetfire, thank you for coming to my ted talk
Correct. But Takara and Bandai, as Japanese companies, had every opportunity to make their own collaboration completely separate from harmony gold's issues. They just chose not to.
When this figure was first revealed I said that this would cost a pretty penny, sell out ridiculously quickly, and find there way to the realm of overpriced eBay sellers… I can safely say that I was right.
More than anything I'm just kind of bewildered this thing was even released, especially at the time it was. It really feels like "Missing Link at home", so why release it right between actual Missing Link and the upcoming G1 Toy Deluxe Prime? Between that, the crazy price, and the limited availability, I'd think that would have to hurt sales.
It's the 40th anniversary. This is the year of G1 Optimus prime. We have: - Earthrise reissue - Takara dramatic bridge capture - legacy deluxe - hot wheels - missing link - ss86 commander
Good video! You are right that I still do not want this, but seeing a more positive take helped me see why people would. I think at the very least that makes the review worth something! Given Hasbro seems allergic to small scale transformers now, we seem out of luck.
As a Hot Wheels fan, I can say that the tampo work looks about par for the course. For mainline casting. As someone who owns a few of the premium offerings, hearing about the issues is a huge turnoff outside the price.
was not extpecting the tjomega cameo, nice review.
To Bandai's credit, PB tends to multiple print runs for popular items. Anything that immediately sells out on pre-order will almost always get another pre-order right away with a later release date.
Hasbro does the same thing, just minus the selling out right away thing.
Im still waiting for the Transformers x Sonic crossover toys.
Dang, I was expecting him to say "UNTILL WE MEET AGAIN" at the end
The type of transformers hotwheels toy I remember the most is Robowheels. Even managed to track a copy of the one I had when I was a kid, still in package, though sadly the hip joint was broken. Good news is that it didn't effect the vehicle mode stability.
Also, World's smallest Prime is about the size of a 1/144 truck and Earthrise Sky Lynx is about 1/139 (Based on Lazy Eyebrow scale chart) so actually very close in scale, and is about what they would likely look like in sized to each other and with the usual gundam kits.. Sky Lynx is BIG.
1:19 YOOO That Mini Cybertron Optimus prime looks fire!!!
It's not. It's kinda shit.
@@DrLockdown oh okay! 👍🏻
Love the nail polish bro 💅✨
Doubtful about the paint thing. You can see the bare metal under the chipping on the thighs.
@@DrLockdown I think the thigh is painted chrome but the red and blue looks like transparent paint on metal
@camhedmr_5593 could be. The only way to tell is to chip it, and I ain't doing that to a $120 figure :P
I popped at the Perspective End reference
Don’t worry. Just wait a few months. Bound to have a bootleg of this. Too easy.
8:56 What version is that small G1?
I just said it in the video.
"Smallest Transforming Optimus Prime".
@@DrLockdown I didn't think that was actually the official name...but thanks.
Yee it's often called "world's smallest" by the fandom, but Takara never once referred to it as that. Only third party figures meant for the same scale did.
Even for a review this is not worth the purchase, way too expensive
Brilliant use of TJOmega with the Die Cast, Help sign
16:20 as a collector of Halo Mega Construx, I am all too familiar with this
Back in August, they rereleased a sought-after set based on Halo Reach. It sold out within 2 minutes. 3 at most. Yeah.
10:56 Tenseg prime my beloved
Now I'm curious if this collaboration would've gone over better if they went the other way. In other words, having Hasbro take a selection of Hot Wheels cars and find a way to redesign them as Transformers. Something to ponder, I suppose.
what diaclone convoy is that at the start of the review? the blue and black one ?
That's not powered convoy. That's Evangelion convoy
@@DrLockdown no i mean from the “brought to you by supporters” patreon bump
Ooohhhh.
Maketoys delta manus.
I feel like the missing link style folding fists would've helped this thing to no end, something about the uncompromising reference to the g1 figure mixed with the scale really perturbs me
Does yours have a faulty right front wheel??
How so?
5:04 What figure is on the left? It looks nice ngl
Smallest transforming optimus prime (often called worlds smallest transformers, though that's wrong).
Will you get the turtles colab figure?
I think so.
When this was first announced I thought, huh, that's neat.
Which quickly changed to "you are out of your goddamn mind" the moment I saw the price lmao.
To be honest for this 20$ would be generous.
... fully diecast metal, fully chrome, produced in limited quantities and paying a hefty licensing fee to Hasbro...
...I don't think that's feasible.m.
This is a toy that, when I saw it, immediately made me think of you, Doc
Nothing will upset me more than that the universe will never let me see a Power Rangers x Transformers collab
4 year old me weeps
i love the reference to perspectiveend there lmao
Yeah honestly if this figure was a full sized chromed out G1 prime, then I maybe would have been fine with it. But no… because it’s so tiny and the price, that really makes it not worth it. Especially with the legacy and SS86 figures coming up. It’s a cool idea, and a good figure… but it’s such huge shame that such a beautiful chrome finish wasn’t used for a full sized G1 prime.
17:12 ROTF legends Hightower is.
He is worth up to five million USD tbh
Even if I had $80, I will not buy this fig, not after Mattel ruined Thomas and Friends...
The price they charge for this thing is absolutely insane.
Two purple eyes refferences between you and perspective end. Y'all should do "at soup" as a skit together.
Been wanting to do that joke eventually
And heck, P-bandai have started to regularly re-issue kits in recent years which is definitely better than Mattel sounds like rn
I am of the percentage who didn't know this figure existed until your review Doc, and also I definitely don't want it either
Note: that gundam colored zoids vehicle is not just any vehicle, it’s actually white base itself, the main ship that housed the gundam
Yep. Realised my mistake after I uploaded.
Ah well. Can't win them all.
@@EzofujiNamikame glad to know that 5000 people pointed this out
Including me
As someone who F$%&ing **HATES** P-Bandai with a burning passion, it breaks my heart to know that western companies are adopting this accursed method of "selling" figures as well. No company anywhere in the world should be permitted to take advantage of artificial scarcity to empower scalpers on **purpose.**
A big reason why I appreciate Hasbro pulse (especially haslab) giving people ample time, for the most part.
@@BlitzkriegOmega why won't you give me the tekaddan land man rodi, bandai WHYYYYYYY??????
@@DrLockdown Also, Hasbro Pulse usually restocks and also puts figures on sale when they don't sell (Powerlinx Hotshot went on for nearly $15 USD at one point).
P-Bandai? Miss the window *once* (because bots bought everything within 2 minutes of the window opening) and your only option is Ebay, which typically sells kits for double to triple.
The very toy both my Transformers and Hotwheels friends claim to be ‘made for the other fandom’
So far it feels like it was made for me and no one else.
Loving the Timelines Ramjet for "Toy you wonder how you get for so cheap" Timelines is such a treasure trove of figures that should be rare and expensive as hell but no one knows about and no one cares about
Yeah I got both timelines ramjets for deluxe price.
The battlechargers too.
@DrLockdown I got Timelines Circuit cause he's the only recolor of RoTF Lockdown that I could find and I could get Circuits sealed for cheaper than some listings of a used Lockdown figure
3:50 ooh i got the three of them
3:27 yeah I wonder that with half of my scripts😂😂😂
I hate that they knew people would try to buy both this and the track fleet version to see if you can give him the trailer so they purposefully made it to where the trailer doesn’t disconnect from the track fleet truck
Wait, it doesn't even disconnect?
That's... really dumb...
@@DrLockdown it doesn’t disconnect nor does it actually open so you can’t even store bumblebee in there😕
Any and all desire to grab one for the novelty has evaporated.
Yeah, I get exclusivity and stuff but... given you could get one of the variants of Newage's Prime for a similar price (a truly PHENOMENAL little figure) I just... could never justify this.
I wanna see hasbro make hot wheels as transformers instead
It would be awesome having a twin mill transformer
Only ones i have are Gigawatt and Frankentron, and they're both fun, so I can't pick a favorite
tho, a piece of Gigawatts chest broke off because some genius thought the piece that you have to press on one end to flip it around should be made with clear plastic.
When this figure was first revealed I said that this would cost a pretty penny, sell out ridiculously quickly, and find there way to the realm of overpriced eBay sellers…
I can safely say that I was right.
We have:
- Earthrise reissue
- Takara dramatic bridge capture
- legacy deluxe
- hot wheels
- missing link
- ss86 commander
What’s the figure at 17:16 ?
Newage depth charge. Retool of cyclonus
That’s exactly what piqued my interest, thanks
Good video! You are right that I still do not want this, but seeing a more positive take helped me see why people would. I think at the very least that makes the review worth something! It did make me realize I would really like some new worlds smallest. Made me realize how subtle but brilliant the changes for that series was.
Also I see you have some g1 Raiden components? I'm curious!
I got cheap copies of the two diaclone getsueis. I still want a proper Raiden though
@@DrLockdown ah fair! I wish you luck with Raiden!
