Shaking hands is a good way of spreading colds and flu. It is a barbaric practice that needs to be replaced by the fist bump. After the pandemic and not shaking hands I rarely get colds and flus and live a healthier life, let alone spreading the diseases to the rest of humanity.
I once met a man with a left hand, but no right hand, however he still reached out his right arm for me to shake what would have been his hand. He initiated this during greeting and at the end of the meeting and I liked it because it showed how confident he was
When at social gatherings try to remember to hold your cold beverage in your left hand so that if you have to shake hands at any point your not throwing out you cold wet hand to greet the other person
This is a fantastic video as handshakes are a very subtle yet important part of gentleman's conduct. Taking it a step further, consider the angle at which your hand is extended. Palm up means you are putting your guest above you. Palms equal means "you and I are on the same level". Palms down indicate a more "commandeering attitude". In the business world I always shake my customer's hands with my palm up slightly. On the other hand if anybody shakes my hand with their palm down I deliberately turn their hand during the handshake to make them equal with me. Thumbs up on your great video.
There is an entire science behind handshakes, but it is a way in which I take my first and usually lasting impression of others. This is a class they should teach in high school!
11:11 "armed with all of these tips, you should have any potential situation well in-hand." Can't put my finger on it, but Mr. Preston is a smooth talker, gotta hand it to him. _Clap clap_
"The Fist Bump" I laughed at first, but wow! What an elegant way to describe it. BTW, loving these new videos with Preston and Kyle, can't wait to see more
Bowing is superior to all forms of greeting. In my oppinion. Pros: -No phisical contact, no disease transmittance; -Respect, and ancestral symbolism; -Very imperial; -Looks epic. Cons: -Mild lower-back pain.
I'm a big fan of your channel. I love the education on men's style and on etiquette. I would like to recommend another topic that seems to be a lost art...writing notes such as thank you notes, sympathy notes, congratulations or invitations and the stationary a gentleman needs to have to send these notes. I have seen the videos regarding classic fountain pens now maybe there could be a video educating us on how best to use it. Thanks for listening.
sdwchef yes indeed gentlemen of previous eras wrote letters and such on fine writing paper with fountain pens! Today texting just doesn’t cut it sorry fellas
as a Turk, I have to say the part at the "3:29" is wrong. we have a lot of handshake types and kisses, greeting is so important at the Turkey. we are not like arabic (middle east) country, there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between arabic (middle east) culture and Turkis culture.
Just for your information, the Freemasons typically bend a finger (say, the ring finger) so the finger stays in between the two hands during the handshake. What finger you put down depens on hierarchy. Some would also bend the thumb downwards, but not in a way that it's between the hands, but bringing the tip of the thumb towards the tip of the other 4 fingers
I'm a trans man, and I really appreciate the helpful advice. Having not been socialized with this information, I have to essentially relearn it as an adult, and videos like these have really helped me build my confidence. Thank you!
Wait I just watched this video because I forgot how to shake hands but tell me why this video was actually very interesting it was so well explained and demonstrated
I am always thinking about why my handshake is usually softer. I tried to practice for a firm handshake, but there seems to be something stopping me from doing so every time I shake a hand. Now I know it is because of the Asian culture lol. Thanks for the video. I will keep practicing.
Great idea for a video ! Please, bring us more of these commond every day things ! Since the bigining of 2019 I’ve been trying to improve my handshake salute by myself....
In food factories, you greet people with a fist pump when inside the production lines for hygienic reasons. It's the only professional environment I can think for a fist pump
Great video as usual. I wonder if any of the staff has opinions regarding the ubiquitous African American handshake routine and whether or not there are any rules regarding it's employment during a greeting or farewell gesture.
I think that some day, you should do an episode about Guy David Lambrechts. He is in my opinion the best tailor in the entire world. You should definatly take the time and look up some of his eue catching suits he has made! He strives away from normal suits and tries to make the man stand out!
In many places, the handshake was not appropriate. Either the fingers are not together with the index finger being separated or in some cases, it is crossing the palm and touching the wrist, which I know is the wrong handshake. Please correct me if I am wrong.
In France, Lebanon (and probably other countries too) sometimes, when a man or woman meets a woman, they do what is called « le bise » which is a kiss on the cheek, and depending on the traditions or country, it can be twice on both cheeks, three times or even more, by alternating between each kiss Yet, I don’t precisely know in which cases you should do them
When holding your right hand out if shakes it with their left I know myself and many others take it as them disrespecting your gesture. Handshakes are a form of agreement and when someone gives me their left I take it as them saying we're not in agreement.
I have to break eye contact to think, and when I'm shaking someone's hand, I'm thinking about the grip. I actually get a boost out of eye contact while shaking hands when I can remember to do it, but it's just unnatural for me, so unless I keep it in mind all the way through the process, I forget and look away. It makes me look bad because I've found over the last few years that people have not really evolved much over monkeys.
Hi, my hands tend to get cold when I'm nervous. Any tips on how to make this less apparent while shaking hands? Does rubbing hands together before giving a handshake give off any negative impression/body language?
It's kind of a negative expression, it gives the feeling that you are nervous as f, when you rub your hands together. Why dont you just ignore it? Most people prefere a cold hand than a warm one, and with a proper smile you should get trough any handshake-situation without looking or feeling awkward. Remember: eye contact and a nice smile are the a and o!
2:22 In my experience, it never was appropriate. I was taught long ago that there was no obligation for a woman to shake hands, but that never meant that it was okay for a man to hug someone else's wife or to hug a single woman. Both were seen as inappropriate and shady.
Hey preston, just a quick question, if it might attack you i am very sorry! I do not try to hurt your feelings in any way. In this video i noticed that your right leg is shorter than your left. Is that true or a false assumption?
My right leg is indeed shorter, by about 1.5 cm, or 0.6 inches. As Jeffrey points out, I discuss this in greater depth in my FAQ video, linked below. Thanks for watching and commenting! - Preston www.gentlemansgazette.com/robot-or-elf-get-to-know-preston-schlueter/?
Amazing video. I once worked with someone whose right hand was amputated. Amazing thought. One comment: you could skip the history and culture intro and go straight to the practical aspects, it comes off like you have no content.
This is literally the only channel on RUclips that would do a 12 minutes video on shainkg hands - cant wait to watch it!
Shaking hands is a good way of spreading colds and flu. It is a barbaric practice that needs to be replaced by the fist bump. After the pandemic and not shaking hands I rarely get colds and flus and live a healthier life, let alone spreading the diseases to the rest of humanity.
When there's a 13 minutes video about a thing that takes a second or two, here comes quality content
I didn't expect the Gentlemans Gazette to recommend to do a Bro Fist.

What they said about the handshake is true. It has long been known.
I like to shake by grabbing the other person’s forearm to make sure they don’t have any concealed weapons.
Jeykneeko _ haaaaa
Also known as the “superhero handshake”

Are you from the midevil age
You’ve been watching too many movies.

12 mins for a handshake!!! It's really a art
"The Fist Bump"
I laughed at first, but wow! What an elegant way to describe it.
BTW, loving these new videos with Preston and Kyle, can't wait to see more
My biggest pet peeve with handshakes is most people rush through them or catch me unaware so I rarely have time to firm up my grip!
Your commentary and explanation of the fist bump was excellent.
I agree
Bowing is superior to all forms of greeting. In my oppinion.
Pros:
-No phisical contact, no disease transmittance;
-Respect, and ancestral symbolism;
-Very imperial;
-Looks epic.
Cons:
-Mild lower-back pain.
Physical touch facilities deeper bonds. We’re hardwired for it
Right. Bowing is far superior to handshakes. Handshaking is disgusting and should be a thing of the past.
The suit colour suits you very well, especially with the grey of the tie.
I had my first good handshake the other day and I look forward to more ✌️
When are we going to see the footage from Preston's concert?
It's on our calendar! Stay tuned. :)

Yet a firm grip could wield a weapon
Why am I watching this, it's March 2020 we don't do that anymore.
Just wonderful
Can u guys do how to properly sit and take proper gentleman dump next? Thnx looking forward for it
How to shake hands:
*nervously wipe your wet hand off on your trousers, act like you didn’t just do that and proceed to give a hand*
Make this viral

Very informative video. Thank you.

Yess new information.
Interesting vid Preston 👍
I plead you for a funeral attire video. Perhaps cover what to wear, what to say and perhaps posture.
Love the oxblood shoes.
I enjoy :)
Great video as always! :D
I ll never forget a teacher picking his nose then extending the same hand for a handshake..
Likewise, I saw someone rubbing their sweaty, dirty feet, then extend their hand to offer a handshake. They were oblivious to how that came across.

Love the video but my only question is how do I shake hands with a woman? Would it be disrespectful if I soften my handshake?
When holding your right hand out if shakes it with their left I know myself and many others take it as them disrespecting your gesture. Handshakes are a form of agreement and when someone gives me their left I take it as them saying we're not in agreement.
Is it weird that i can almost exactly tell whats going on and whats being said in the little demonstration videos?
What is sweaty palm etiquette? I struggle with almost constantly sweaty palms so I'm curious to hear the Gazette's point of view.

What is the proper name and way to shake hands with a little person?

Absolutely on the left hand. Shake the left hand with the left hand.

@Gentlemen's gazette ,i have an upcoming interview the first week of January 2025.
Would you kindly help me get a skirt suit for self?
Also in arabic countries Never use left hand shake because associated to personale hygiene
Good to know that Raphael doesn't run the entirety of GG and Fort Belvedere
And what if I don't want to shake hands with others? Should I do handshake with a best friend in a group? Or a relative?
There is nothing worse than a limp ‘vickers’ hand shake
