I like your excitement in this stll after all the time. Cheers Klaus
I love your wacky “glitches” and the puns in the review 😍🤣🤣🤣 keep up the great content
professor !
As always, very helpful and thorough review! Thanks.
Stephen, thanks for the review, and certainly looks like a solid pen and good value for money. Also the fact that it is available in a variety of colours give folks some options.
Love the little puns that you are able to slip in
Great review. Thank you. You have a special kind of humor which I enjoy.
Always wonderful content!
Good job please keep making...
I love my Sailor Pro Gear demonstrator too much and don't want to risk the chance of loosing it. So I'm looking for a cheaper Sailor as my EDC, and want to still be able to enjoy the same kind of "Sailor feedback" everywhere I go. This seems to be a good match for me need. Thanks for the review!
Very interested and informative review.
Thanks for your review. I received mine a few days ago and love it, but it doesn’t seem to post as well as in your demonstration. I’m guessing it’s just my pen.
i do enjoy SBE's humor along with a discerning pen knowledge.
As mentioned on IG, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this relatively inexpensive pen. I have the olive green. The barrel does indeed leak as I tested it with water and drops began to drip. It’s not a stream of water, but it certainly is not watertight. That’s a shame, as I don’t see the appeal of viewing the cartridge or converter through the barrel of a pen. 😉
I bought one of these (the exact model you review) because I wanted to try a Sailor nib. I appreciate the value you pointed out, considering it comes with a converter (which I subsequently used in my Sailor Promenade because it did NOT come with a converter, despite being double the price of the Compass). It is a good reliable writer. However I just cannot deal with the feedback from the nib. Too much for me. But thank you for your review and I agree it is a good investment just to get into the Sailor world.
The Compass uses the same nib as the Lecoule. While the nib/feed isn't interchangeable, the entire section can be swapped with a Pro Gear or a 1911s. Great review as always!
nice, I want a purple compass now
I enjoyed the catalog I got in the mail from Goldspot very much.
I use a q-tip to clean the cap of my LeCoule. Works nicely.
talking about nibs. I would love to know more about the difference in nibs related to the overall writing quality of a pen. How important is a nib for the total writing experience. Could you say that the top five of steel nibs, also contain the top five best writing pens?
Thank you Stephen. Value for money isn't always a fountain pen virtue, but it is in this case 👍🏾
Stephen, if I was to get a demonstrator, I’d want one like this, crystal clear. Can you tell me, size aside (since I do realize this one’s a bit small for your hand), how would this compare to TWISBI in terms of how it writes? People seem to love their TWISBI’s, but you here a lot about them cracking. This Compass may be a good foray for me to have a demonstrator.
The intro music... reminds me of Ramadan in Egypt.. they pray at all hours of the night and day. Kinda cool. I wish this pen was a little less money. I love the clear feed though.. and all the colors with the matching converter are super cool. Nib and slip line up is a plus.
Why did I think the mofo thing too 😂 it might be worth buying for that alone... is that like a 12 year old boy? The dry humor, I’m here for it.
Does the ink in the cap get on the pen (the grip section or the body of the pen after being posted)?
I have this for many years as a previous released model called 1911 Jr
I also like this pen, it came in clear and translucent colors
It was a less expensive version of the Procolor 500
The clear feed stains with Sailor inks
Please find and review their HighAce Neo
A sweet very inexpensive fine nib pen, which writes like an XF
Yeah j have too,it's a same pen, only translucent color have changed
Been meaning to ask, what is the intro music you use? Nice review!
How would you rate this against the Platinum Cool?
Greetings from Xalapa, Veracruz. México
This is the twin of the SAILOR Lecoule and Junior - there the feeder is inserted into a certain cutout and the nib into the slot above it. So, no gold nib can be inserted there, and it is not necessary)) This is a school pen (on Ali you can take it for 25-26 euro). The nib is good, but its canvas is made of very easily bendable metal - this reminds everyone of the well-known Pilot school nibs (Kakuno/Cocoon/Prera, chinese 78G). I do not advise trying to flex and set the gap carefully !
Nice plastic, but is build quality also good? Do you think it will last as long as, say, a TWSBI Eco for less money? (I know this is hardly fair, but many of us ask these sorts of questions when making a purchase decision.) How does it compare to less expensive Japanese pens from Pilot and Platinum?
In my estimation the build quality is almost the same with the Jinhao 992. Too similar for me to justify the price.
Am I right in assuming that the included converters match the color of the pen itself?
Yes! They all do. I have the purple one and I love it
What dramas did you have with the prefounte? I was about to pick one up for work.
Nothing much, it jist was a little hars to get the cartridge started
Looks like a copy of Jinhao 992 :)) Just joking...love Sailor!
Or a Chinese made Lingmo Lorelei
Goldspot carries every ink you can think of (very dangerous for me) and quick delivery. Q: What do you have against boxes?
He, like me, thinks that they’re mostly gimmicks. I pay for a pen, not a fancy box, although a good pen and box at a good price is nothing to complain about.
6 yr old girl ha! Great review Stephen, entertaining as always , jude
Hey! So I got this pen, bit I was wondering if you can dissemble it
The nib and feed pull out
You can say things and then they are true....unless everyone on the internet then wants to argue with you and say that what they say is true instead. Modern times--so fun!
This is a cheaper option for a demonstrator pen, the 1911 demo is in the upper tier of Standard pens. You can simply repurpose a nib from a 1911S and, voila, a demo pen. A clear improvement. I will need one for the pendemic that has broken out in my place. I imagine your friend doesn't like medium fine nibs...it's the BM nibs that I think stink.
How easy is it to get sodium metal where you live? Just drop a small piece inside the converter and then you’ll really be able to blow up pens!
How does it compare to the Pro-Color or is it the same ?
The Procolor is a different pen all together. This is a cheap pen with a 1911-inspired body. The Procolor, on the other hand, is pretty much literally a 1911 Standard with a steel nib. Once upon a time, it was even available with a full range of nib options (mine has a steel music nib), but a couple of years ago everything except the MF nibs were discontinued outside of a few store special colors for Nagasawa, where you get a choice of F or M.
@@madcrowmaxwell great info thank you.
I have a remarkably similar Jinhao one
I'm guessing the 992 is meant to be a clone of this pen? I have a few of those, and they do look very similar.
@@laurafindsjoy yes that's the one. I had 5 or 6 but sold all but 1 of them. don't tell the Dr, but I eye dropper mine. he won't approve!!
@@laurafindsjoy Jinhao came out around 2017, compass is from 2020. Maybe it's the other way around, or just coincidence.
@@byron3763 Oh, wow! I didn't realize that.
Is this the same as the Sailor Profit Jr. 1911?
It is indeed the same pen.
Looks like a Monteverdi Monza.
More like a Monteverde Monza is a copy of a Sailor 1911.
I don't see difference between sailor compass and profit junior clear demonstrator
The top down camera angle makes me feel I am about to fall over..
You got a good nib. I am among those who got a substandard nib. In fact, the single worst nib I have ever had. Beyond scratchy actually unusable. And I will say that for the price point I think the Compass is rather too close in apparent build quality to the jinhao 992 or the Monteverde monza (both apparently low cost imitators of the 1911 design)
That’s rather concerning since I got my 992 for $1.50 with free shipping and it works perfectly.
So, you got one of the good ones. I've heard that Sailor's QC on their low end steel nibs (HighAce Neo, Compass, LeCoule) is pretty much non-existent and some truly terrible nibs seem to make it out the door. The good nibs, of course, are still really good, but you run a much higher risk of getting a bad nib on a Compass than you do any of their gold-nibbed models (or even on the Procolor, which is their high end steel nib model)
when the low end is good, how does it stack with the procolor or the 14k one? i've a procolor and it felt almost indifferent to the 14k, though leaning on wetter writing, consistent to many reviews about sailor's steel nib
I got an unusable nib, actually unusable.
@@shadowmihaiu aw.. that sucks. now even Japanese themselves seem to be getting the procolor clone Jinhao 992 rebrand, known as fonte. not good for Sailor, and the procolor is getting difficult to find in the west some say, when I found the clear demonstrator one I knew I had to get it.
Yeah, I have two Procolors and although the bodies are excellent, the nibs range from meh to substandard. Not nearly as good as their gold nibs. It's a shame, because I actually kind of prefer a good steel nib over gold.
No explosions ? I guess the world needs a MontBlanc Michael Bay. Special Edition....
If you have a 6 year old girl inside, you have to release her immediately or we will call the police!
After one of some recent reviews I have almost written that I miss your jokes - and here they're back. So good to have MF-ing good humour.
Looks like a lot like a Noodlers Ahab.
