You can configure the standard settings for the trackpad so that a two-finger tap behaves as a context menu/right-click. No extra software required. 🙂

Yep-that’s possible. I prefer the left corner click on the trackpad instead, which is what I had set it to. However, if you want to use the keyboard to open up the context menu in, say, Word, then karabiner is needed unfortunately.

    Great tips. Thank you
I am working with a Windows laptop and a Mac mini and it is difficult for me to use the correct keys on the Mac. What I don't like about the Mac is its window management, which is very rudimentary, for example where a window hides behind other windows and is difficult to find. Another thing that is difficult to get used to is that the programs do not have their menu directly in the window, but you have to first click to "activate" it and you will find the menu at the top. That confuses me every time when I look for the menu to see the options of a program. I also can't get used to its files manager and the Windows one seems better to me. On the other hand, you can also work relatively comfortably with MacOs. 🤷‍♂️

Changed to an MacBook Air M3 a month ago. After changing to an IPhone 13pro abt. 6 months ago. And I love both of them. Had no big transition issues/frustrations until now. I understand why a lot love Apple and IoS. So I and happy with the change. But yes, windows has it a superior features too. Do not miss them though.

It's crazy to see you have to download a tool/extension for almost every simple thing on a Mac. (and they said you have to download drivers on Windows, hehe)
I however have to admit, these then integrate pretty well into the OS, eg. they move to the top bar.

to make Windows act just like a Mac, you'd have to do the same thing, but have more restrictions.
Really, if needed, do it, but I recommend weening yourself to the proper way of using a Mac, as it has a lot more intelligence and thought put into it, in every single way.

Wow! Thank you for these very useful tips. I might do the switch…
I’m on Windows for 30 years and wish to move to the Apple ecosystem. My data is extremely disorganized, often in many copies, and all over the place (different old computers running Windows 7 and older, external hard drives, clouds, usb keys, CD-ROMs, floppy disk, etc. )
I wonder if you would have some tips or links to start the process properly?
My dream would be to only use iPadOS with an iPad Pro and my iPhone. But from the searches I made, it seams iPadOS is very limited and I should probably buy a Mac to do so to start…
May I ask for your advice?😉

    • @BrilliancePsychology

Happy to hear that you found these tips useful. With regards to data, what I did was to throw everything on OneDrive and just sync it with my mac. That may or may not be suitable for you depending on the amount of data you have.
With regards to using the iPad as your main device, DON’T DO IT. Don’t even try it, as it will be a time waste. At least on MacOS, you may use some hacks as I’ve show in the video to customise the OS the way you want. iPadOS is so limited that even basic tasks could feel cumbersome. My iPad pro just sits as a youtube/ebook device.

@BrilliancePsychology The secondary click on the Mac has always been 2 finger click by default. I have been using a Mac for over 20 years and it was in the tutorial while setting up back then. Maybe they took it out.
For your mouse issue, many windows users blame it on macOS but it is actually your mouse that is causing that issue. Like windows, you need to instal drivers and the appropriate software for your mouse. Logitech and Steelseries have software and drivers for their mouse. Razer doesn't store software on their mouse, they use the cloud, and their cloud software isn't compatible with macOS. To get their mouse to work correctly Linear Mouse is used.
Not a mac issue, a mouse issue. Additionally, if a mouse is a USB 2.0 device, you will see that on the mac if you use a 3.0 or higher port to connect the 2.0 device.
Karabina is not something i would recommend on my worst enemy. I ran into conflicts with applications i was using, as well as ram leaks, and other hardware utilization issues. Not noticeable to the basic user, but noticeable to me. Moving from macOS to windows I can understand wanting that familiarity. I use both windows and macOS and prefer the mac shortcuts; although the screen shot shortcut does suck. You can change a lot of the shortcut in the stock mac software. I use a logitech Keyboard and mouse. The Logi Options + app does a lot of this and much more. No need for SNAP.
To open the files just press the spacebar.
I use Windows, Linux, UNIX, BSD, and macOS daily for both personal and work. At work i'm limited to a lot of the defaults, yet at home i customize both to suit my needs. Majority of my time is spent customizing and fixing issues in windows. For my linux systems and macOS systems, i set them up the way i wanted the first time and was good to go, minus that time I installed karabina which i had to use a time machine backup prior to the installation to fix all my issues.

Awesome video thank you. Would u recommend switching to Mac to a dude that:
    - used Microsoft entire life
    - likes Excel & Word
    - Uses OneDrive for his business
    - Uses CAD for business (are these machines powerful? My current specs are 3070 Ti (laptop), 32 GB RAM & Intel i7 11th Gen
    - Wants to develop (pay sb to develop) custom business applications to run locally on my laptop
    - willing to spend money on high end devices
    - likes to take & edit videos (file sharing is soo annoying oftentimes with android phone + WS laptop & I fel iPhone camera is still the king)
To me the Macs seem less 'botched together' and more performante. It seems I see these 5 year old airbooks still going strong while my 2 year old $2k 'self-assembled' laptop is already starting to have some issues.

    • @BrilliancePsychology
      @BrilliancePsychology  Месяц назад

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The only thing that I can't comment is CAD software, but for the rest, I can definitely say yes.
      - I use excel, word, and onedrive frequently and find their mac versions more than sufficient.
      - I do a bit of app development and love the fact that I can release it for ios devices. If the business app you're talking about is only for you to use, then it should be fine, but I would go with windows if 'reach' is an important factor.
      - Sharing photos and video is a breeze between iphone and mac. It could have also been the case with windows but apple doesn't like to play nice. Editing is also very fast with the M series chips.
Feel free to let me know if you have more questions!

While I can understand a bit of a headache when you switch over, I have been in IT for 30 years - retired and now going back in, because retirement isn't for me (at least not at this young age) I started out on a DOS compatible and Switch to Macintosh in 1991 and never went back as a personal computer. However, for work I used both and can switch on the fly between the two without any trouble. I think the problem is the programming in our heads when we become bias in our minds about something that tends to set the stage for some failures. While I may grumble about Windows every now and then its nothing my life depends on. You need to understand its two different computers and they both really well at their tasks. As much as I would love for Windows to be more like a Mac. i don't add things to it to make it more like a Mac. The same on the other side My Mac is my Mac and the Windows PC is a Windows PC.

I started off with a Mac in the early 90's. Windows 3.x was out at the time, and I found Mac OS 7 UI better to me. Macs and PCs were relatively the same in cost at the time. Then Windows 95 was introduced and I started building my own PC's and quickly forgot about Macs. Windows XP/ME/2000 eventually came around but I got tired of all the malware I had to deal with. Steve Jobs then made his triumphant return to Apple and iPods were all the rage. My first iPod was the iPod Photo in 2004. I loved how I could use it with my Kenwood stereo as a CD changer replacement with the appropriate adapter. Then Steve Jobs introduced the original Mac Mini and that really piqued my interest. I ended buying the Mac Mini. I was so impressed how far along Mac OS had come along. A couple years later, the original iPhone was introduced and that cemented my entrenchment in the Apple ecosystem and never looked back.

Thanks for sharing mate. It’s interesting how the choices we make earlier in life significantly affect the trajectory of our relationship with technology. I, for example, never had an iPod around that time-just had the usual mp3 players. Maybe if I had an iPod, my story may have turned out differently.

iOS and iPadOS now have an App Library, there’s also a folder app for transferring data from connected drives, or interacting with cloud storage.
And I’m sure you know of all the features available if you stay within the ecosystem.
As for the Mac, the task bar can be made dark to hide the notch and shortcuts can be created for any specific tasks you need.
Also VLC supports mkv files, but I’ve not used it myself.
Hope that helps, I’m presently looking at moving back to the Mac, last Mac I used was the Motorola StarMax.

“For some bizarre reason pressing ENTER renames the file instead of opening it” - Apple assigned this key behaviour in 1984 (or probably before in LISA) and it was Microsoft that decided it should open a file instead. It’s Windows that has the bizarre behaviour when a quick Cmd-O opens the file. Remember that ENTER is used to move between fields when text editing, even in Windows, but then suddenly it opens a file in File Explorer! Consistency? Not a strong point on Windows.

    • @BrilliancePsychology

Maybe it’s worth taking the time to adapt to the OS to see its benefits.
You can also maximise a window with Function + double click on the corner of a window by the way. This doesn’t full screen it.

I've switched back and forth a couple of times. I even used Linux for a a few years. I currently have a couple of Windows machines that I use for specific purposes. I used to build custom computers so both those machines were project computers for me. But I have been comfortable using Mac OS for over twenty years. I found that you need to just jump into the Mac OS environment and quit trying to find a substitute way of doing things that approximates Windows. First off, Windows is not an intuitive OS. Mac isn't totally intuitive, but if you know nothing about computers it is much easier to learn because it seems more logical. As a writer, the hardest thing to get used to for me was the whole backspace and delete keys thing. I use a keyboard that connects to both Mac and Windows on different channels and it has the keys I need for each OS. I have also found that MAC OS is much easier to connect new devices to the computer (with rare exception). You will have no problems if the device you want to connect says it is made for MAC OS. But a lot of devices will support both OSes.

    • @BrilliancePsychology
      @BrilliancePsychology  7 месяцев назад +3

I can definitely imagine it not being a big deal if you're used to using all the different OSs out there, especially from a young age. But most individuals have experience only with one OS or the other for most of their lives, which makes it harder to switch to another OS, especially if you're trying to do it at a later age, where your brain might not have as much neuroplasticity as it used to. Think about it like asking a right handed person to only use their left hand from now on--would be pretty challenging :)

I am very used to having those buttons on the right side too, but unfortunately I couldn't find a way to shift them there on MacOS... Have a look at Tip #2 on the video for the windows style maximise function. I have set maximising to Win+up short cut and it works well. Also once you download the karabiner and install pc-style shortcuts (Tip #8), Win+W can close the window and Win+M minimises it. With these three shortcuts, you don't even need to bother with those tiny circles anymore!

I switched back and forwards to Mac / Windows all the time.
Despite the impeccable hardware and design, Apple disappoint me a lot regarding gaming and other unnecessary hardware and software restrictions that affect the users.
The M1,M2 and M3 are capable enough to run great games, but the lack of support Apple is giving to the developers is destroying the whole gaming scene on Mac computers.
I had a Mac Studio M2 Ultra which was very capable to run anything, but again: Apple is against gaming it seems, and there're only a handful of games you can chose from, often for a high price compared to Steam.
Not everyone is 100% into making music or editing photo's: there's more you should be able to do with a almost 5k euro system....
Nowadays, Windows PC's are better and better, and if you chose the right hardware, it should be able to run smoothly without hassle and/or noise.

That's not something I experienced on my M1 Macbook Air. Could it be a ram issue? How much have you got? Mine is 16gb and it's pretty smooth, even when I'm editing 4k and have multiple windows open.

I have a mac mini m2 16 gb. I have enough of this machine for all tasks, but the animations slow down, and it's like this on all macbooks and iMacs, look closely. This is a huge problem with Apple.

GET ready to pay huge repair bills when your Mac laptop fails. they are so thin and impossible to repair yourself. the ssd and the ram are soldered on to the soc. a Lenovo laptop has at least 2 m.2 drive slots as well as SSD. you can replace your ram or upgrade it. every part including the screen can be ordered and replaced yourself. If we have a nuclear war good luck trying to find an Apple Store open to fix your MacBook. I build PC Towers with i9 14900k all day long. everything is repairable and upgradable. even during a war or some other national disaster in the USA. Apple charges a fortune to repair and how you order your MacBook you are stuck with for life. PC just upgrade the motherboard to get thunderbolt 5 and WIFI 7. or even an AI Co Processor.
