    This is my journey. I switched to a MacBook for my personal work computer in 2011 and never looked back. Unfortunately others in my family and at work continued to use Windows and kept me in troubleshooting hell up until this year.
    I have finally switched everyone to Chromebooks and Macs. My IT tech days are over.

    Woa, this is a super high quality vid in every way - story, visuals, editing - great work! I watched it through and then noticed it only has 500 views. Keep it up, I am sure you'll get a lot more subs and views with this quality.
    Side note - when I started my first business 20+ years ago, Steve Jobs had recently returned to apple and innovation there was back. I researched a bunch and invested in macs for my creative business. Their marketshare was like 2%. But the integrated hardware/ software gave us a HUGE edge in uptime and also put us ahead of PC shops on creative work. We actually landed contracts purely because our demos featured stuff that no one else was doing and seemed fresh. We always managed to stay a bit ahead of the curve. I kind of miss those days! A weird gaming highlight - I became a tester for Blizzard when they were developing WoW. I had a somewhat unique mac setup and for some reason Blizz was still making games for Mac natively, so I got in the door. Those were fun days, feeling like a real maverick, lol.

      Thanks for the comment! Great story, yeah Blizzard used to be one of the few devs who always had Mac ports of their games. But I guess not anymore. I was a huge WoW head back in the day, loved Blizzard to death.

    Good vid. I'm exactly the same. I recently switched to Mac, after 30 years of 'fixing' windows and PCs, I have saved so much time already with a stable closed system. There are still a few things to get used to on Mac, but that's the trade off.

    Watched this and smiled. It's like we have the same experience. Flashing ROMs, dealing with drivers, BSODs, being moral crusaders against the big bad fruit company. Now, we're grown up and just want things to work and stay out of our way. My brothers still laugh at my 180 turn since I went full Apple and never looked back. Still really happy with my current laptop, but I might upgrade to the M5 Series. Great video, keep it up.

    Lifetime PC user here myself, and I'll be staying that way because of my freelance work. But I recently bought a 14" MacBook Pro just to see what it's like for development. And as you said, "Their overcharging for storage is just outrageously offensive." I think Apple's take on that is, "Yeah, say what you want and complain about overcharging, but as long as you keep buying, that's what matters." I think Apple would realize even more profit if they lowered the price bar for their hardware upgrades, since more people would probably choose to upgrade at that point. But unless that happens, I think you just have to accept it, take the hit and get your wallet out.

    Oh my God, I am going through literally the exact same scenario right now. I’ve been on PC my entire life, literally since before windows was even invented. I am a photographer and videographer now, and my work is mainly centered around high volume real estate. I have slowly started integrated into the Mac ecosystem and just recently made the decision to go full Apple on everything, for literally all of the reasons you described here. I’m just tired of dealing with the disjointed and clunky feeling that android and PC gave me all the time. I don’t have time for that stuff anymore, I wanna spend more time with my family and friends. I plan on doing a video about my switch as well because I was a huge Apple hater myself also. But watching this video almost felt like it was exactly the same thing. I was gonna say when I made mine. I just need a system that works, just like you said. I feel like these days. I am working faster than my computer works and it should be the other way around. I shouldn’t spend the majority of my time while I’m editing, waiting on the computer to complete tasks, it should be waiting for me for the next. So, yeah, I’m done with android and PC.

    I had a similar experience all the way back in 2005. I'd been gradually getting more and more frustrated with Windows based PC's. I loved PC Gaming, and for work I did a mixture of PC sales and graphic design for the company I worked for. A very good friend of mine who happened to be a web designer had been urging me for years to try out the Apple ecosystem and I'd steadfastly refused. I remember arguing with him about how expensive Apple computers were, how they didn't have all of the ports or upgrade options of the PC's I was used too.
    Still, when the Mac Mini came out I finally decided to dip my toe in. Partly this was to prove him wrong and partly because I was genuinely interested and the Mac Mini was really cheap.
    Within 6 months I'd upgraded to a PowerMac G5 with a 30" Cinema display (which incidentally I still use, the display that is) and had a 12" PowerBook G4. I've never looked back.

    Interesting thoughts. I’ve used Mac computers (Mac Mini and several MacBooks) over the years and I just hated the experience every time. I did realize that there’s always a period of getting to know the OS so you can operate it quickly, which is vital for feeling efficient and thus enjoying it. But I’ve had so many HORRENDOUS problems with trying to get a reliable rig for playing keyboards live running Mainstage (proprietary Apple software for that very purpose, mind you!!!) on an M1 MacBook Air that it would take a LOT to convince me to give it another shot. And I’ve run into other catastrophic problems with Mac computers while my last two Windows laptops have ben running very smoothly with hardly any problems.
    My takeaway from this is: there all computers. None of them are perfect, and most of them can do the job if you know what kind of processing power you need. The rest is mostly a matter of taste, so everyone should go ahead and get what they like (if they can afford it). End of story. :)

    i've been a mac user my whole life. I recently built my own custom PC. and I kinda use both now. I use my PC with its raw power to play games and just generally use it as a gaming and social device as all my friends also switched to PC over the years so it allows me to chat with them over discord while playing my favorite games. But I still use my Macbook Pro for all my work, video editing, etc as Macs are just more user friendly and intuitive.

    I'm a gamer/computer nerd and I only use a PC desktop for gaming, everything else I prefer using my macs.
    for all the reasons people have to hate macs, almost all of them boil down to cost/money, as soon as you have the money the cons of macs immediately vanish and they make so much sense.
    My first turning point was also the iPad, iPad 2 specifically, it was so thin so simple the software was so fluid so easy to use, and my android phones were so laggy so ugly in comparison.

    I'm completely in the android world, and also built my own PC. I have to say, Samsung in particular (it's the only manufacturer I had in the last 5 years.) has really managed to make a line of products that is supper solid, just works, but still let's you tinker with stuff, because it's android. I love that! Don't like the launcher, ok fine, change it. But do be aware that it might cause a bit of bugginess. I think the pros of changing the launcher to something where i can set up everythin exactly the way I like it wins over the fact that it crashes once a month, but if I change my mind, I can go back to the default and I'll have a great experience. When it comes to windows, my experience is somewhat different. While I still love the editing power of a RTX 4090 I hate how unstable many modern video cards have become. I don't know who is to blame here. Microsoft, Nvidias drivers, or bad board design and QC by OEM's but my PC does crash somewhat frequently with the source beeing my GPU. Never had a problem with my (Windows) Laptop though. I feel like Windows is just a bad operating system and from my experience so is mac OS, I think really there has to be something new, that doesn't have to keep compatibility with old stuff.

    What an amazingly written, shot and edited video, bravo!
    I know youtube comments isn't the best place to ask for advice, but I like the way you think and I'd much appreciate it if you'd give me a quick opinion.
    I'm facing a dillema right now, trying to decide what platform to upgrade to: either to buy a windows or mac laptop. I'm a young artist (photo/video) and a professional video editor, but I also love to game. My budget is 2k eur, and for this money, in my region, I can either get a top tier windows laptop or an entry level m3 pro (18/512).
    I'd be ready to sacrifice some gaming, but my main argument for going with windows is a choice between some and a lot of compromises. My thinking is that by choosing the windows machine, I'd get the best experience that microsoft can offer, while choosing the mac would mean compromising storage and ram, which we know is very important for this field. My strategy would be to switch to mac in the future, when I'll have the budget to get the most powerful machine I want and need, without feeling like I've left something out because of budget constrains.
    I'd love to know if you think that my decision is correct or not and what would you do if you had the limited budget?
    Thank you.

      Hey thanks for watching! I think you might benefit from watching my second video about M3 Max MBP. The short version is: overall experience is more important than specs. But to answer your question more directly, I think you either need to get a desktop PC or an Apple laptop. PC laptop is probably the worst way to go, IMO. You get only the downsides of a PC, but not its strength (raw power per dollar). And not a single PC laptop is as nice and easy to use as an MBP by a mile. What I would do in your situation is buy a heavily discounted M1 Max on B&H or Amazon (use one of the services that give you US shipping address and then ship to your country) and then import it. Even with shipping costs and paying VAT, it's still gonna be cheaper than buying new locally. It's a hard way, but I think the best way to go with limited budget. Best of luck to you!

    I still love the simplicity and versality of an all-in-one consumer oriented 'home appliance computer' that my 2008 iMac was - starting my journey back into the Apple eco-system with an Apple M3 Max and an iPhone 15 Pro. I need my PC for the IT work I do - but Apple computers are a creative escape - and I get what you said about console gaming too - getting away from directly facing a monitor/display is so important as in distance when gaming for me. Great video - New sub.

    @theprestigerklopt5085 Год назад +1

    I liked hearing your thoughts and your points about the games. I feel that the Mac is slowly becoming "better" for gamers, too, but only for the latest generation, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. I wonder what your thoughts are about the future of Mac gaming. Will it have any chance to change for the better at all within 5-10 years?

    • @shagral
      @shagral  Год назад

      That's a very interesting question and probably deserves a video in itself. I think yes, because 1) M-series Macs are better than ever positioned to be viable gaming devices and 2) the cross-over between Mac-users and game developers must be very large (I assume). But the push for it must come from within the gaming industry, because Apple doesn't understand or respect gaming, deep in its culture. And they don't have much business reasons to fight for more Mac ports of PC games because they won't get a cut of those sales. Apple thinks Apple Arcade *is* gaming, because that's where they make piles of cash. If Apple were to get serious about gaming, they would have to force a change in their culture by hiring a gaming exec from outside, someone like Phil Spencer, who loves and understands games both as a culture and as a business.

    This is a good addition to your video about editing on resolve. Our background is somewhat similar except for that I stopped tinkering with hardware quite a long time ago. So that is an extra point for your argument for getting a macbook for the creative business that is videoediting. Thank you for your thorough exploration of this issue coming from that previously sceptical position.
    You helped me deciding to get a macbook now for good. So thank you for that.
    Another question though: since you are doing colorgrading as well and since this will be the first leg of my postproduction career, how accurate do you find the color-representation of the macbook display? This question is only viable if you also use another monitor to reference, like a dell ultrasharp though. Without direct comparison I bet the differences would be relatively hard to spot.

    • @FelixChamber
      @FelixChamber 5 месяцев назад

      On the not of colorgrading: your videos are a tad dark. You might do good in stretching your footage a bit further across the waveform and can still maintain punchy shadows. Even more so, your shadows could then also have more texture. Just something for you to consider or try. Maybe that macbook display is too bright, haha?

    • @shagral
      @shagral  5 месяцев назад

      That's the kind of look I like but I'm moving away from it, firstly because it's incredibly hard to get consistent results across a range of devices without a proper monitoring setup (more on that below) and secondly because RUclips's compression algorithm absolutely destroys shadow details, turning everything below 30 IRE into a mushy mess.
      Regarding colour on MBP it's a mixed bag but for reasons you might not expect. I had to do a lot of research to understand what's going on. People talk about "Apple gamma shift" but very few understand what's really going on.
      The screen itself in gorgeous and calibrated very well out of the box, plus it looks virtually the same as my iPad and iPhone, despite them having different display technologies. And unlike PC there is OS-wide colour management and you can simulate a calibrated Rec.709 or sRGB or DCI reference display, for instance. I should be using that more, but then constantly switching profiles for consumption and for creation is a hassle and it's still a workaround, not the fix.
      The problems start when your content is leaving the Apple land. The core of the problem is that Apple being Apple created their own display standard that doesn't conform to any accepted industry spec (they mixed DCI's P3 colour space with an outdated gamma for Rec.709 - a combo that doesn't exist anywhere else). Which makes it extremely hard to grade for Rec.709 displays while sitting behind an Apple display which is Apple P3 and in case of MBP also with HDR levels of brightness (1600 nits). What you're creating and what you're looking at are apples and oranges at this point. That's why my videos made soon after I got the MBP look too dark. I figured it out since then.
      The only way to be sure is to bypass Apple's display with a proper external monitoring setup (which I don't currently have) - that is a clean feed out of a VideoAssist into a calibrated Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 display. That is also true for PC for professional colourists, but at least on the PC side you could get away with a single monitor setup because of OS and displays and content ALL living in the Rec.709 world. But if you would grade for cinema delivery, for instance (DCI P3) on a PC you would still require an external monitor calibrated specifically for that.
      It's hard to fault Apple because 1) display looks gorgeous, P3 is a noticeably better colour space and 1600 nits is great for watching HDR 2) because you should have an external monitor anyway. BUT I really wish they'd use an industry-accepted colour space and gamma combination, like P3 + Gamma 2.4.

    As a 32 y.o. I agree on the idea of going back to separate devices for separate purposes.
    I know my tendencies, and I know that if I have one device that “does it all”, anywhere, anytime, it will be more difficult for me to focus on a single purpose.
    And I started doing this on software level… I created separate accounts on my Windows PC, with each serving a different purpose: one for me being just a person, one for me being a music producer, another one for me as a RUclipsr, one for me as a Gamer, etc. That way I could “lock in” to a role for a block of time. Essentially putting obstacles between myself and my addictions ;)

    Hey, here the next video idea. You did a great job at exposing misunderstandings and marketing tricks around ISO and RAW.
    Furthermore, me and my friends adored how you annihilated Sony cam. Please, can you write the blog post or record the vid on mounting lenses and speed boosters (focal reducer is the real term, another trick) and bs logic of full frame standardization (we should standardize crop for Super 35mm really). And explain mechanics and effects of mounting bigger lenses for smaller sensors and vice versa.

    I felt sick to the stomach about considering a move to Apple. After spending each working day battling Windows; I came home to more of the same. I still wanted that freedom in the digital landscape, making my own choices regardless of consequence.
    But the lure of the controlled utopia of Apple was omnipresent. "It just works" they said. "Why do you stick with Android?" they asked. And this week my resolve completely dissolved.
    Over the course of two days I splashed the cash on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro and on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Gone are the HP Envy 360, the Galaxy Tab 7 and, this hurts the most, the Samsung S24 Ultra.
    I feel slightly anxious, like I've woke up fuzzy headed after a heavy night out, those tendrils of dread draped across my brain but you have wrapped your arm around my shoulder and told me "It will be ok" because, at 49, I just want it all to work. I've not got the patience nor the tolerance anymore.
    Thank you my friend for explaining your journey. It was not too dissimilar to mine. Into utopia we go to grow older disgracefully, I hope.

    I gotta say I've used both back and forth over the years. Windows 98, Windows 2000, Window Millenium Edition, Windows XP, but than I found out about Apple as well. I won't tell the whole story as that would make a big huge comment here. But for me it started with Snow Leopard on my first Mac. Windows Vista PC. iMac 24 inch from 2007. Back and forth throughout all the years. After using both over 30 times each I can finally say I like Windows more. Why? Mouse has left and right click as well as wheel in center. The menu bar I always found annoying. Sure I know about menu bar use to close an app and all that, but it's still kind of retarded to me. The dock I always hated. It doesn't cover left to right. A lot of things in Mac overall I always adjusted settings so it worked like Windows. After 20 years of Apple products I realized oh look, I wow, I always adjusted the settings so it works more like Windows to begin with. So why did I keep with Mac for so long? Exactly. I always adjusted it so it worked more like Windows. Therefore I finally finally realized that after so many freaking years and went wow oh wow, I'm gonna stay with Windows as it also has games on it. Millions of games! Windows is just easier to use in my book.

    Very interesting video dude. I am not interested in switching to apple, but I just decided to research what people actually find good in it.
    Personally your issues with PC don't resonate with me. Ever since Windows 7 till today, I didn't have any problem with my personal PCs. Always rock solid stable. I choose to think that way because I've built so many computers I know which components to stay away from (e.g. Gigabyte, I had so many random issues with their GPUs and Motherboards), but I might be mistaken because in statistics terms my sample size is still small.

    Wow. You screwed up a great deal. Listen dude, I'm 61 and have been in the computer industry for decades. I owned the first IBM PC and the first Macintosh. I was a beta-tester for Windows 1.01 (which I still own a shrink-wrapped copy). My current PC I built about 10 years ago and have had none of the issues you have expressed. It has run Windows 7, 8, 10 and now 11, flawlessly. Certainly there have been badly performing apps, which have been removed. However, the computer is now 10 years old and I can still run the programs I had in the 1980's. Can you say that for the Mac? No. My hardware still works and I have relied on this system for my businesses as well as gaming (occasionally). The problem is generally 1) research up front regarding stability vs. performance (a lot of software and hardware is poor and may offer things you want and you disregard issues like stability) and 2) proper work practices. I use both computers and I can tell you that if there is a problem with a PC running Windows, I can fix it. I have run into problems with the Mac that have "bricked" the system to the point where all that can be done is to wipe the computer back to factory new and start over. Poor decision man as you obviously know just enough to be dangerous and not enough to be safe.

      Quite a bit of hostility there. There are pros and cons to both a traditional PC vs the Mac.
      I'd like to address your points though, for genuine dialogue, not seeking a flame war here.
      1. "My current PC I built about 10 years ago and have had none of the issues you have expressed" Well, good for you. I'm sure you can appreciate that your personal hardware and software experience may well have given you a different set of results compared to the person who posted this video.
      2. "It has run Windows 7, 8, 10 and now 11, flawlessly" As well it should. If you built a high quality top tier computer and you also upgraded it as time went on there is no reason for it not to have been able to run Windows 7 through to Windows 11. It might surprise you to hear that Apple Mac's also have long and useful lives and receive many updates over the years. I recently purchased a 2013 Mac Pro to add to my collection. The last official OS for it was released 8 years after it was first sold and is still officially supported.
      3. "I can still run the programs I had in the 1980's" That is a benefit to Windows, it would be nice to be able to run 16bit and 32bit apps natively in Mac OS still without needing an emulator. Having said that there is a flip side to the same coin. By Apple not supporting legacy software like Windows does it forces the Mac Developers to not be lazy and to keep their code current. Look at the Apple Silicon side of the fence, around 90% of the applications I use are now Apple Silicon native. The other laggards will soon have to fall into line as Apple will not keep Rosetta running forever. Yes, this does mean that some games I really like or some applications where the developers no longer exists cannot be run. But what I do use is all 64bit, native and fast. Personally I'm up for taking a bit of pain if it means that ultimately the platform moves forward.
      4. "My hardware still works and I have relied on this system for my businesses as well as gaming". That's good. Your requirements have obviously not moved much over time and you are happy with what you have. That's not really any different to the Apple side of the fence. My father still happily uses his 27" iMac from 2010. Apart from maxing the Ram and adding an SSD it's not had any upgrades.
      5. "The problem is generally 1) research up front regarding stability vs. performance (a lot of software and hardware is poor and may offer things you want and you disregard issues like stability)" This part right here is the section where I realised you just don't get it. Why should anyone have to spend time researching stability and performance between various hardware and software configurations? There are clear advantages to owning a Windows PC, but surely you can also appreciate that because Apple makes the software and the hardware the old adage of "it just works" is genuinely not that far from the truth today. You personally might not be phased about looking into all this stuff, but most people are.
      6. "2) proper work practices. I use both computers and I can tell you that if there is a problem with a PC running Windows, I can fix it." Pretty much ties in with point 5. You can fix the issues that crop up when some 32bit application that probably still uses some 16bit code from the original build does not want to play nice with your graphics card/whatever. But the average person cannot and even most of those that can don't really want to. I grew up changing the IRQ settings on my sound card in Windows 3.1 to make it work. I spent years fixing crap in the registry editor of Windows XP or working with crud DLL files. I also appreciate that Windows is getting better all the time, but seriously, I just cannot be bothered with that shit anymore. Really I don't understand why I ever did.
      7. " I have run into problems with the Mac that have "bricked" the system to the point where all that can be done is to wipe the computer back to factory new and start over." It's possible, like any computer a Mac runs software and it is possible to make everything fall over. It's also extremely rare and I suspect that as an obvious tinkerer (and I mean that in a good way) the chances are you were doing something a bit out of the ordinary!
      8. "Poor decision man as you obviously know just enough to be dangerous and not enough to be safe." You're entitled to your opinion. But I think that you struggle to accept alternate view points that do not line up with what you personally think.
