You would be surprised at how close the fan load is to the horsepower rating. I worked at Briggs for a while doing dyno testing. Had a customer that built these blower rigs and had issues with the engine overheating. Reason, to big of fan. Nice to get that going with minimal messing about.
Great video about fixing stuck valve. After watching your video's and others I have decided to attempt this myself. All I need is a garage or shed and energy. Great job.
I just picked up an old wheel horse with a 11HP things been sitting for years b4 I messed with it I put a we bit of Marvel Mystery oil in it, then cleaned the carb but she still wouldn't start checked compression 28PSI, put some mineral oil in the spark plug hole she fired right over, normally use Marvel Mystery oil but didn't have any left, compression went up to 60PSI ran long enough to get the carb dialed in, tested the tranny shifted into all gears 4 low 4 high I was amped! Went out next day wouldn't start checked the compassion back down to 30 PSI I guess ill pull the head next, I don't want to repower it just because of the funky clutch system she has a great deck and its an 8 speed, I did drive it around. Anxious to get this back on line.
I wonder if you could hollow out a spark plug and braze an air hose male adapter and pump in some compressed air while turning it over. Might that help the exhaust valve close or loosen up? Just a thought.
I like your videos. Could you do a little more preliminary diagnostics on these? Like pulling the carb bowl, looking for bad gas, checking the gas tank for contaminants and showing us the compression test results, and also giving us a little more background on the engines? I think it would really help new folks who are just starting to learn small engine repairs like me.
As a general rule (with automatic compression release), you should still read 55 to 75 on gauge. Healthy 4-stroke will read 125 psi ideally with correct test, no ACR.
@@doublewide6 I agree, Whenever i get a new engine I always take out the plug and squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil in and any other parts that move. Good job.
Depending on how long the engine has been sitting that may work. If you store the engine with the valves closed there won't be any issues and I squirt of oil always helps.
doublewide6 Repairs LLC I just found and watched. Very cool ! It would of been nice to see though how you made your testing station there next to your radio! I did also see your other video on “3 useful projects” that appeared one a continuation but you really didn’t get into much detail. I actually picked up a cheap 120v bench tester that allows for various volt and amps and I can preset to run constant up to 30 volt and I believe 5 amp which is more than enough !I wasn’t looking for a power supply to run a radio too though (already piped in to garage) but nonetheless a very cool setup and thanks
I can't count how many freebies I have acquired over time because of this very issue. Most of the time, you can get good results like that without having to take anything apart. Cheers Bob! Hugs to the Little Man! Zip~
Yes these are tough engines to start. Also because of the mass of the blower impeller it tends to want to flood. I put a new carb kit in it and it starts easier now and runs very even. I'm keeping my eye posted for your shake and break tool video. Bob

Cant beat them old briggs engines
I learn something new every time I watch your videos. thank you
That is great thank you.

Interesting, I know most of the newer ones now run Honda engines.

Awesome that worked!!
Mine only has 20 psi I’m going to try that before I take it apart. Thank you much appreciated
Free and an easy fix = a good day!
Yes, it was a great day. I ended up putting a carb kit in her, so I do have a little more time in her.
Had the same problem on the same machine. Stuck intake valve. I was able to budge it with a screwdriver. Running ok now…
Nice find and nice job, Bob!
I have an engine just like that does almost the same thing at 30 pounds of PSI the maybe almost 40 but it runs fires 2 or 3 times then stops.
Thanks

I had the same motor on a Troy-built chipper, replaced the carb then ran like new. Bought carb on eBay for less then $50
Yes! It has the compression release
Thanks, I think just about every Briggs engine does have a compression release.
Nice fix, once in a while something just goes o.k. Thanks for the video's.
Yes, for every 3 that don't work out easy 1 may get fixed. Once in the while the blind squirrel finds the nut.

Nice job and video - thanks!
My Briggs 12HP 281707 engine has only 50lbs compression . Off for many years. Should I replace used engine??
Great fix, great tips.
Thanks for watching Jim.

I will keep it in mind. My time is really limited at this point in my life. Thanks for the feedback.
@@doublewide6 that means you won’t ever do it. Typical excuses, excuses.
If you have a compression release can you get an accurate reading with a compression guage?
As a general rule (with automatic compression release), you should still read 55 to 75 on gauge. Healthy 4-stroke will read 125 psi ideally with correct test, no ACR.
That was easy, nice grab.
Sometimes taking your time instead of ripping everything apart is the way to go.

I've been told that if you fill the head with transmission fuid and just let it sit - that it would work . Just hear say .....
Depending on how long the engine has been sitting that may work. If you store the engine with the valves closed there won't be any issues and I squirt of oil always helps.
is it possible for those 8hp motors to have too much compression?
What did you spray in the spark plug hole that was in the store bought pressurized aresol can?
For odors that linger.
Try cleaning before perfuming
Gday DW6,
Great vid as usual. 50/50 acetone and atf. Thanks for the tip I’ll remember that 👍
Cheers, Nigel 🍻
cool vid thx
No poblem.
Could you postdoctoral a video on how you set up your DC bench tester? I think it’s better than having a 12 volt battery on my bench thanks
I already have a video on the unit. Search Computer Power supply for playing a radio.
doublewide6 Repairs LLC will do thank you so much! I also got the lift table but just the 500 capacity one!

That was amazing! Thanks for posting Sir 👍 Excellent information!
Yanking on an 8HP Briggs flathead isn't much fun Good for you you got it. Fun stuff Bob. I started one today that has been sitting since last fall.

@@doublewide6 Right. I will probably make it when I need it. lol
Sorry about the spelling I meant to type “possibly”
Nice job DW6, 👍👍
