@@doublewide6 I am not saying what you did was wrong only what I found to be the issue with this mower. I got the mower for free since the owner could not figure out why it had random starting issues. He installed a new battery and a new starter! In the second year of use; sweet-running B&S engine / hydro-static. Regards.
If you read online about broken automatic compression release mechanisms, it definitely happens. Problem is, by the time you get done with new cam (and other damaged parts) plus labor, you are into it for some money. Then it depends on value of mower, and decision by owner to repair or replace
Thanks for an informative video. To help confirm that this is the problem with my engine, can you tell me what kind of compression reading I should be seeing if the compression release in not functioning properly? Thank.
Great job! Does the 20 &21 hp. Briggs & Stratton have the same compression relief? I'm guessing that they do and just today a friend is having a start issue (new battery)😉and I believe this will solve the problem.
Great video but don’t expect anything less. You mentioned you may have made a video on the making of the valve cover gasket, would you be able to post a link to it?
Hi Pete, Bobby is doing great. 2 years off treatment and playing soccer, baseball, basketball, and flag football. His birthday is today we are having the family party. I am super happy.
I’ve got one I adjusted the valves on o don’t see the exhaust valve even doing a slight bump. When it cranks it spins and stops. Sometimes backfires through the carb. While trying

Check the valve lash first. That's what fixed mine with a similar issue.
I did before I filmed, you will notice the valve cover was off. I should have mentioned it.

Eric O at South Main auto would of used OEM parts.
Oem is always best. I give customers the option. Many times they want knock off carbs because they are 75% cheaper.

@@doublewide6 what happened to your son?
Overcoming leukemia. Diagnosed at 5 years old. If he can go another 3 years without relapsing he is considered cured.

Worst they have no plans to correct it

About how long did it take for you to do this repair? And did you do anything to prevent the compression release form failing again?
2 hours for the whole job. Nothing to prevent it from happening again.
Do most or all, small engines have a compression release? thanks, enjoyed the video.
Yes, most of them do on tractors, but not as many push mowers.
very professional job!! Thanks for sharing Rick
Good job, that wire fix was a good call, saved that motor base for the owner,
