  • Here's another video in my line up of E370 videos for Synthesis Technology. Here I'm using it for a second time alongside the Rabid Elephant Natural Gate and sweet baby christ on a bike ... they're a potent pairing! There's a full track / jam / wide shot video exclusively for my Patreon supporters with this patch but for now check out the 4 oscillators on the E370, 2 of which go through the Natural Gate alongside some beats and FX create a little action sequence style patch. Suggests for a better video title in the comments too please! 'Action patch' sounds weird :)

Natural Gate is a real winner. On my want list. Been loving LPGs in general, but specifically a DIY Nonlinearcircuits LPG with resonance control. Would love to add Natural Gate to my setup. Soon I hope.

I've heard the NLC unit is good, I hear good things about their wave folder too.

Just got an Optomix but boy the Natural Gate is nice too.

      Yeah I like having both.

Does the NG go more "fully open" than the Opto? Like all the way from a drone to a pluck? Opto is certainly a beast for plucky short sounds.

A really nice gate love the sound of that vco .So you have your trigger and pitch going into the vco with the audio output going through the gate controlling the length of the sound ? would you have to add some kind of adsr to the trigger to create attack or is it possible without ?
    nice one

Hi Matt, no trigger to the VCO. Typically if you're thinking about say MIDI or playing a keyboard you've have pitch (the note) and a gate that lasts as long as a key is held or as long as a sequence step is set to run. A trigger is just a short (often 1ms) gate with no sense of sustain or length, like clicking your fingers.
In this instance my pitch sources are going into the E370 to control the pitches of the oscillators. Two of these then go into the Natural Gate and I'm just using a series of gates or triggers (doesn't matter which) into the 'Hit' input of the Natural Gate from Rabid Elephant. It then has on board decay control as this is striking a low pass gate.
Traditionally you'd want to put a gate into an envelope to generator an envelope shape (rises, falls, sustains etc) then put the sound into a VCA and the envelope into the CV input of the VCA to control the shape of the sound.
A trigger wouldn't work with an ADSR really as there's no sustain period or gate length to then set an attack time. But putting a gate into an ADSR then putting the ADSR into a VCA or Natural Gate would let you shape the volume and tone with say an attack.
Hope that helps, let me know if not. Always happy to chat.

Nice one not thought of getting a gate but might do now as i got a make noise contour to help create pads with black wavetable vco but i've been sending trigger (beatstep) straight to contour then vca.
So without a gate if i go from trigger to maths to contour then my vca ?
(tried this couldn't really hear the advantage probabbly got wrong end of stick)
i think ive been getting round the gate length n sustain period with using beatstep as sequencer ,sending long triggers to contour, its probably not the best but i can add rise lol.(rise and attack are they the same ?)

      Hi Matt,
ao a trigger from the beatstep will tell something to happen, in your case to start an envelope on contour, or that could start an envelope on Maths too. These envelopes then need to control something, such as a VCA as you mention.
Going Maths then Contour is not needed.
Rise and attack you can think of as interchangeable in terms of thinking of envelope shapes yeah.

Hey just out of curiosity, what can the Natural Gate do that, let's say, an LxD (with maybe a Maths) can't?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  6 лет назад +1

a significant amount less HP than the pair of them! The switching of the response and transient shapes is more unique here. But you could get fairly close with the LXD and a Maths. |Maths offers more too but that pair is a lot bigger and more money.

@@zbsfmlxd was discontinued and fetches a pretty penny on the secondhand market these days. Maths and an LXD might be more expensive than a Natty Gate at retail. The LXD was $110 bucks when it was still in stores.
