Is the hit input voltage sensitive? Does it open up more with higher voltage triggers? Or will any trigger "strike" the gate as hard ad another?

Hit is amplitude independent and will hit the gate fully. To hit it dynamically, use the CTRL input with a pulse of varying amplitude. The pulse (to emulate the HIT signal) should be about 800us in length (just a hair below 1ms) but as usual, to your ear is best :D

stupid question....it is an envelope as well as a filter..right?

Yes, with no input connected, it will output an envelope on the corresponding output jack. We use NG for envelopes as much as for 'VCA/Filter'

Is it vactrol based module ?

No way! Vactrols are so 60 years ago. :) Also they don't sound as good as what we've brewed up.
