- Given the fact that we're working on our own animatic adaptation of Unsouled and Soulsmith, Will wanted to jump on the mic to talk about his experience writing it!

I understand what you're saying Will, but I still think swapping the hornet remnants for having Lindon hide a glock under the arena is going a bit too far.
You misunderstood. The Empty Palm is now the Empty Magazine. The hornets with guns stay.

The problem with changes in adaptations often comes from the adapters believing that they can tell a better story than the original author.
It is always best when the original creator is involved, but you often do have to change some things.
Hope to see Cradle as a popular full-on animation in the future!

The most recent Dune movies had some pretty substantial changes to the original plot, particularly in regards to Chani, but they were still excellent movies.
The Wheel of Time TV show on the other hand had enormous changes to the original plot, and is awful.
The difference is exactly what you said: Dune told the story of Dune. The WoT tv show told the story of, well, not The Wheel of Time.
Invincible also made a lot of changes but still told the core story, and told it well. Same with Lord of the Rings; lots of changes, but still excellent movies.
Lord of the Rings might be THE example of doing it to perfection. Able to make it accessible for the wider audience while also appeasing the books fans. Truly an unachievable masterpiece.
We really want to tell the STORY of Cradle, more than anything. That's the goal!
man bringing up the wheel of time really hurts me. I had such high hopes for that show- adapting such a great epic fantasy with the backing of amazon should have been amazing- but instead of telling the same story they changed so many IMPORTANT pieces of worldbuilding and story (WHY DOES PERRIN HAVE A WIFE THAT IS FRIDGED). And they didn't even do so knowing that it would build in a coherent way- they just had the view of one episode only and forgot they were supposed to be adapting a huge story. Ugh it just makes my blood boil lol
@@WillWightAuthor I strongly disagree that Lord of the Rings is THE example of a perfect adaptation. My favorite reasons why center around Faramir. First, Peter Jackson has stated that he didn't think elements of Faramir's character were believable (so basically Tolkien was wrong.) Second, a close encounter between Frodo and a Nazgul on the Mordor side of the river really messes up the plan and the plot. Yes, they were good movies, but I don't agree that they quite tell the same story that the book did. My favorite adaptations are both series, and both by the BBC: the 1998 adaptation of Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens, and the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. (Star Wars Rebels happens to be my favorite production in its universe, but that's not an adaptation.)
This is such an on-point take. Changes in the medium usually results in the need to make changes for the presentation. But keeping the original idea intact is what a lot of fans care for. So glad that your involved in the project.
I remember seeing that the last us of creator was also very intigrated with the show years later, this allowed him the rare opportunity to recreate their story and fix and change things again after wirh just as much if not more hype and change for the better (hopefully) This is absolutly a different medium so things will change inherently but if there is anyone that should change things and almost tell their story for a second time, it should be the original creator.
Either way i will pay good money to see Eithan get kicked off the skysworn ship and all other moments with him...

The Last of Us was one of the better adaptations out there, no doubt. Especially how closely it followed the games while improving the nuance.
Hopefully we get that HBO money! We'd have a whole episode dedicated to kicking Eithan.
Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin of the Chernobyl miniseries are co creators for the adaptation. They are equal partners as show runners and lead writers.

I just want Lindon to look like an evil cult leaders son, is that so much to ask for? I mean, I'm gonna love the story no matter what and I understand if that doesn't work on screen as well as it does in the book, but the juxtaposition between overly polite and constant glare from hulking young teen was *chefs kiss
My tabletop group all love the books! And we've adapted the setting to fit the TTRPG... Panic at the Dojo! It's sooooo fun!

Wheel of Prime is a clear example of trying to tell their own story instead of Robert Jordan's.

The story really isn’t all that different and the heart of the motivations and character threads are very well paralleled.
Imagine trying to adapt a story many many times longer and vastly more complex than cradle to 8 hours a season.
I always thought that most challenging part of adapting books would be finding a way to integrate the book narrations, and character inner monologues.
As I see it, the more visual the medium the less acceptable narration and monologues become.

It’s a completely different format. The way they translate from the books to movies is very different. As long as the movie makes me feel the same way I felt reading a book, I welcome all the changes necessary. I am so glad to know Will’s thoughts on this. So much hype. ❤️😍🥰

I am quite curious about how you'll handle inner moulage as there's fair amount it and carries so much context. Waiting patiently for the animation.
Even more so the inner dialogue of Lindon and Dross. How would you represent whole conversations happening in his head in the blink of an eye?

Its understandable that some changes will need to be made just because of the nature of a book vs a comic vs an animated project
I think what important is to keep the same emotions, concepts, and ideas the story inspires in the viewer and that different mediums require different methods and sometimes different story beats to maintain that authenticity. Not even mentioning that you lose a lot of time and depth from book to movie that you have to make up for with visuals. It seems like a hard task, but the trailer was awesome. it sounds like will has a good grasp on what it will take to make this succeed. and i will say i have never wanted anything to succeed so badly lol..)
one thing that i think is really important here is capturing the iconic moments in the books. The gravity that they had when reading was unmatched. The heavens opening up in the first book would be a great example and was shown here.
also, just read the video description and was about to hulk out until i saw the words just kidding.

Changes do sometimes need to be made, but Will is correct that you shouldn't change a character's basic personality. That is where almost all of my criticism of the. LOTR movies comes from.
I agree with everything you said. If you want a prime (pun intended) example of this just watch the wheel of time adaptation. I couldn’t make it through the first season
adaptions should try to follow the books as closely as possible after making allowances for the different mediums. For example, books often have a long inner monologue that won't work on the screen. You need to show it differently.
The one exception that comes to mind is Charlie and the Chocolate factory. The Slugworth character trying to get the formula for the everlasting gobstopper wasn't in the book. But it was a great addition.
That being said, the book is almost Always MUCH better.

You talk about having to cut for adaptations. What's your thoughts on pacing? It would be awesome to see nearly every scene in the book go into the show. Are there any other adaptations that are very detailed in this way?
I've thought, if adapted to animation, rather than show bullying, it should start off with him talking to the fox about how proud is father is of him before being tested. The viewer's grief over the son's lost relationship to his father is a useful remapping of the same idea.
Wait wait wait. "A voice actor". You mean it isn't just nothing but Travis? Boo! Kidding. Though I hope there is a "bloopers" that is just Travis and sock puppets at the end.
I like how you specifically called out adaptations trying to tell their own story. Far too often it seems like the adaptations that are struggling, the writers may not be fans of the original content. And they want to "fix" the story and tell their own. Instead of being fans of the source material and trying to bring it to a new medium. And yes I am thinking of The Witcher and I am sure plenty of Tolkein fans could say the same about Rings of Power. Here is to hoping the animatic goes great and can lead to more in the future (even if the Kickstarter didn't quite give the funds needed alone).

I think the adaptation change that came closest while still missing the forest for the trees was Bridge to Terebithia. While overall very good, they flubbed a major detail at the end and it ruined the whole movie for me, because of how much was conveyed by a plate of more than pancakes than usual.
You’ve probably answered this before so “apologies” . If successful, and I know it will be, do you plan on adapting the other books in the series?
If successful and we find a willing studio partner, yes!
Thanks too One Piece I can actually understand what you’re talking about. A good change was to the Syrup Village episode that boiled it down to the most necessary characters and while it cut out a lot of Usopp moments he is rather useless up at this point so it’s mostly gags that are lost. On the other hand a lot of stuff was cut from baratie so that elements like Sanji joining and Luffy working off his debts lose some of their meaning. Still, while the story beats might get out of tune I feel it captures the spirit of the piece and eagerly await the second season as well your project.
If there is a primary canon, would you say its the books as they are the source material, or the animation as it is something you're working on and making charges to?
