Male dogs were used for Lassies because females shed more and faster so males were used so it wouldn't look like a different dog by the end of filming. That's the explanation given by the Weatherwax family that has been breeding the dogs for many years.
Also, not to be picky but Leonardo DiCaprio was 20 during this interview and not 19. The Basketball Diaries was released in 1995.

I just mean the perception of being young and dumb, like the way Dave was talking down to him. Could be that he was just a dick here but its nothing new for older generations to look down on the young.
