5 Lessons We Learned From Our Helicopter Series + THE LOST EPISODE of Cold Island
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- Over the summer we took a two week long helicopter trip and flew the Millennial Falcon back to Newfoundland. We filmed our first long format travel series called Cold Island and in the process we learned a ton about aviation, travel and survival. We're sharing the 5 lessons we learned, some things we brought that saved out butts, some things we didn't use at all PLUS The Lost Episode!

Thank you guys for the love on the series! Would love to do more projects like this, what would you like to see?
Becki and Chris Oh! I would love to see you guys go on a real camping trip!
I've watched and enjoyed all of the Cold Island Series. For me I liked what I thought was a change in your production style for the series and I'm pleased to hear Becki mention above that you were actually going for a different style (meaning, for me, that I hadn't imagined it ... thanks Becki!!). For me Ch 4 (Trinity) was the best and the best of that was the "men in shed" sections - awesome listening to those guys tell their stories. Quirpon approach/fog-fest on the helipad was a close second.
Aaaand to answer your question (which is the point of this reply) - the memories of the "shed men" was epic and would lend itself, I think, to divergence in style ... after all Becks did suggest that you had set out to be more "documentary".
Whatever, I'll still watch :)
PS, when I saw your tent I was a little bit anxious (on your behalf ;-) if a hoolie had hit it would have been away out into the Atlantic. Maybe you can look to getting something that can withstand bad weather which, after all, is when you say you're most likely to camp out??? Just a thought.
More FPV drone based content..those look rad
Doesn't necessarily have to be helicopter videos.. Would love to see you two do a series on different cities and travel. Maybe some videos on your remodel and your home.
Becki and Chris I would like to see you guys get some rest you do so much already :), but I would also like to see you stop in DFW / Dallas Fort Worth metroplex in Texas and explore the sites or northwest Arkansas and Go to Devils Den. So many things you two could bring value to.
You know you're a badass couple when you land in your own backyard after a trip!!:)
You need to grab some of the fuel bags from Airframes Alaska, they take up way less space and are super useful. Loved the series by the way!
My dad was a world-class pilot, I got to see and do a lot, but helicopters were never part of our lives and experiences...until now when you introduced a big missing link in aviation in my life. My dad, before he retired from flying, was a CAP pilot in charge of promoting safety (besides the traditional search and rescue). As you know most accidents are laid at the feet of pilot errors so it is very refreshing to see how much attention you give to safety and not negotiating with fate. Your talents in recording, editing, and sparring with one another take your posts to rarified heights. I love your candor and transparency. Concerning Jesus, they wondered that anything good could possibly come from Nazareth... did you say you're from Canada? lol I love everything about you guys, keep up the good work.
Such a thoughtful comment! Thank you so much for watching 🙏
This WHOLE SERIES was sooo awesome... with each episode being even better than the other... which is CRAZY! Can't wait until you guys do something like this again!
Dear Becki and Chris, your helicopter-trip was fantastic with a wonderful story and cinematography. Please don't stop doing the camping thing because this was one of my favourite parts along with your visit to your families. "Gas ⛽️ cookers on a rock" - I thought you did great. Thank you both. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You guys are the best. I never finish a B&C video without a big ol smile on my face.
Loved the series and this video tied it all together. You guys are the best channel on RUclips and I don't think there is anything you've done that I haven't enjoyed. In real life I think you two would be so much fun to hang with. Please never stop posting.
This series has hand's down been the absolute BEST RUclips series I have never watched. It was was so well done, so personal and so informative. You guys did an outstanding job connecting with us and making us feel apart of this journey with you! You should feel really about this!
Ricky Clark thank you so much!
💯 agreed
I have been fallowing the channel for a long time but I've been putting off watching this series for a few months. Glad I finally watched it. It was so good!
My dad's side of the family is all from Corner Brook so its cool to see this part of my heritage from your perspective. I also like it when you guys start talking in your newfie accents, I always get a kick out of that.
So proud of what you both pulled off. And of course, I'm grinning ear to ear seeing Chris rock a life's better when you make stuff shirt!
Way to roll with the challenges of a documentary project. I've never had a multiday shoot go to plan. and I've come to accept that's half the fun. Even though it does feel great to be really prepared and have an idea of what you want the story arc to be. I've found when I'm too committed to a pre-conceived story arc I end up sometimes missing the actual story thats going on.
Thanks so much Levi! I think it’s great to plan but definitely leave lots of room for spontaneity and roll with the punches! Sometimes the best stories happen when they come out of nowhere! 😊
I absolutely loved the Cold Island series! I really liked that this was a separate "documentary/ mini series" with a story and cinematic shoots as Becki said in the video. More projects like this would be awesome to see! Everything from a big trip like this one down to a weekend getaway to a cabin, mountain etc. Can't wait for the next one!
Dale Media thank you so much!! Definitely want to do more and got a few ideas in the works! I think 2020 is gonna be about experimenting with different content
This whole series was so well done and inspiring. I’m actually doing this for my trip! So this was exciting
LofiBry aw thanks so much!
You guys absolutely crushed the Series! So fun to watch! #Goals
Absolutely the greatest series ever
“Moist mound with that mustache” 😂😂😂
Death By Confetti 😂😂
Lololol, ROLLING! MY wife AKA knucklehead did the same thing when it comes to a coat on a camping trip. I was so grateful! I looked at her in a different light that day. she would just sparkling even more to me..
And if she ever read this #superhero for the day. Yes, "YOU" saved the day woman! Lolol
Landed on top of the waterfall and flew your drone through the doors of the helicopter... a pretty standard day... You guys rock!!
Hello you two! I've been watching the channel for some time but only now I had time to watch this whole series. I live in Brazil and today we are at the end of the fourth month of the world pandemic and your trip is one of the most pleasant things I could have seen when it comes to seeing the world outside. Thank you for that and I hope that much more will come from this content.
This one was a riot. Laughed pretty hard, especially during the moist time.
Nothing turned out the way I pictured it... But were you disappointed?... No.
That might be the best definition of a grand adventure!! Thanks for sharing. This entire series was exceptional!
Hi Chris and Becky,
I tour around Europe in a Gyrocopter and because space is very limited, I always take a fuel bladder. It can be rolled up so is easier to stow than a fuel can and weighs about the same. You might want to consider investing in one or two for your next trip.
Fascinating series, great job guys! Going to visit NL next year.
You Two are AWESOME, thank You for Your work, Your idea and Your abilities. Good Luck with Your future projects!!!!
What a beautiful series!! You guys are definitely my favorite youtubers! Period.
Guys this was a super SUPER awesome series to watch! I just wanted to make one suggestion that I think would give you great peace of mind when it comes to communicating in the environment you experienced.
While satellite communications can be a great resource the tried and true method for backcountry communications would be HF radio. With very minimal equipment and low power, you could realistically get in contact with someone anywhere in the country. It can certainly save your life and is relatively low cost to get into. I would suggest contacting a local or nearby amateur radio group and seeing if you can arrange a test to get a Ham Radio License. It's an awesome and welcoming community and I'm sure whomever you get in touch with would be more than happy to guide you through the process of getting licensed and finding the appropriate equipment. If you'd like any help or have questions feel free to DM me!
Thank you for the break down and the lost episode. Its been great following you.
That was a perfect conclusion to a wonderful series. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
I finally set aside the time to watch this from Episode 01 all the way until this outro episode. Congrats on the documentary style - it takes so much effort for filming, planning, and then editing to actually produce it all. So so so gorgeous. Reminds me to start editing some more plane footage 😍 Also, Chris - the POV through the helicopter doors was 1000% worth it
Would love to see more series like this! Going to Alaska or other parts of Canada 🇨🇦 would be fun see
It was a great series Becki and Chris!...Well done.
It was an awesome series. Y'all are a big deal.
Love this "Canadian Aviation and Photography Channel"!
Finally had a chance to watch this series and I"m so glad that I did.
Really enjoyed the series, the quality of the video, the narrative style and the adventure itself.
Series was great, thanks for filming it & sharing with all of us
Thank you for sharing your story with the world...EPIC!!!
Love you guys - - love the series and don't be embarrassed about anything.
I love this channel so much. Good stuff!
Great series ya'll! Loved your visuals from New Foundland!
Such a dope series. Bravo! Great cinematography and an engaging story. Well done
I just watched this in one sitting!!! The whole production was beautiful!!! Netflix should air this lol.
Guys, this video series was great. I think the format you chose works perfectly. Better than the vlog format. This reminds me a lot of roadtrips I used to do with a Volkswagen van (with a pop top roof !). Some of the things you went through are somewhat similar to what I have experienced before. Although of course some of the issues you had because you were flying were way worse and dangerous !
Please continue. This is inspiring :)
"moist mound" almost spit out my coffee LOL!!! This was great. The series was really fun to watch and I'm glad you guys shared what you learned.
Great series guys. Loved every minute of it. Keep the mo Chris, looks good. Cheers from Australia
Superb series! Enjoyed following you guys! And Chris... keep growing!!!!
you guys are the best at story telling! Great job on the series!
Great adventure guys and enjoyed every moment of it,you learned a lot along the way and will have helped others planning similar things, just keep safe, keep flying and having fun together.
I agree with Becki. Carpoon island was the majestic and everybody's favorite
If one of your goals was to make a cinematic, documentary-style series - wow - did you achieve that goal and then some!!! Glad you’re home safely. Thank you again for sharing this.
I can't wait for the next series. Best channel. Thank you!!!
I can appreciate your 40 hrs of flight time. I’m a fixed wing pilot who can trim up his airplane and fly with a very light touch. I flew an R22 (without hydraulic controls) and the pressures I had to put on the cyclic & collective were significant! I can’t imagine flying for several hours at a time. No fun!
Very well done on the entire series. Great inspiration to share great places and good stories.
Amazing series! Thank you for sharing this!
Cold Island series is 💯 the best thing I’ve seen on RUclips in 2019! Couldn’t wait for each episode. Thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Thanks for all you hard work putting it together to share.
Matt Robinson I agree completely. Haven’t been this excited for uploads in quite a while!
Love you mosquito hat…I have the exact same thing that I bought on line…but down here in Georgia we call it a gnat hat as gnats are so bad down here. They fly up your nose, in your ears, eyes and mouth. I understand why you liked them.
Thank you for the series! Loved it....
I'm so glad you finally showed coming home. I thought the last episode was the end. Now you need a bloopers reel so it won't be over yet.
Wonderful series and you two are GREAT peeps! Maybe west back to BC through Banff and Glacier Nat’l Park could be fun. The editing was most awesome and loved the long format. Thanks for sharing, VERY enjoyable content!! :)
The videos were incredible. So well made, you don't see stuff like this anymore on RUclips. Maybe a road trip next? Might be simpler/cheaper than the heli one!
MOIST... MOUND 🤣 Loved the series guys! Glad you made it back safe!
Definitely loved this Travel series!
A very profound n sincere, THANK YOU.
Excellent series!!! You guys kick ass!!!!🔥
Finally youtube recommend smth inspiring for me!
loved it thanks for sharing the lighthouse was coolest then the whales off trinity
Great way to end your holiday.
Being a climber of 26 years and an amateur/hobbyist mountaineer, while I was still fit and injury free for a few of those years, there were two times in my life where I thought "Fec this could be Game Over". At those times I was with my best friends. When the proverbial is hitting the fan, you can't comprehend what is happening because you are in the moment. Over time you reflect and the bond with your friends/partner from shared experience becomes unbreakable and eternal.
Just sayin. Provided you can live with that two week attempt at stubble. :-)
If I may be so bold as to offer two pieces of advice, the first would be to invest in synthetic Down Jackets. Far more forgiving in wet conditions.
The second is to invest in a geodesic tent. These things are bomb-proof in the wind, especially if you are forced to land and camp on a big scary rock. I've been in mine at 70mph/112kph. The chessboard and whiskey helped considerably during those few evenings. :-)
LOVED this series! Great work!
I don't know why I discovered it now but I'm glad I found this. These series are so beautiful. Love them. keep em coming guys! Cheers!
Love this whole series. Thanks
L&E in Flowers Cove....my hometown, well actually Nameless Cove....but “fee and chee”? Such a townie phrase! At L&E it’s a “snack with everything”! Hahaha! Fish was so readily available, we’d never pay for it....so deep fried chicken was the treat!
Loved the series! I think it showed how beautiful the world looks from the air (there is a reason everybody likes drone shots) especially where you flew. Makes me really want to go there. This was a very expensive series to produce, I know being a pilot myself. However logging such wonderful hours is the best. I'm sure it will be one of your fondest memories. I look forward to what you do next.
Certainly enjoyed the series, thank you!
This is 🔥. The amount of effort you put into this really shows. It looks very Professional. Love all your videos guys and not only the way you film or edit but also your personality. You guys are awesome.
Loved it! Great job you two!
I love this follow up video. Still sad the series is over but I’ll get over it ;). Stoked for more content from you guys tho!
The Series was Great! It's funny how the mindset changes between fixed wing and rotor when planning a trip like this.
Thanks for taking us on the adventure!
Awesome series!
so so so beautiful, congratulations
It is refreshing to see you two keeping it real with your experiences. Love your videos and editing is simply epic.
I'd been waiting for this one for real.
Something like a tuxedo time with you two talking about the journey and the experiences...
Thank u
Yall killed this shit....and I can't wait for regular uploads again..miss you guys
That first good stretch when you get home is everything 🤣
I totally understand your desire to not put yourself in that remote of an environment again in the near future, but…
I have have to say that your videos are exceptional on so many levels. I found you because of my love of aviation content, but I subscribed to your channel because of you talents, and your wonderful personalities.
KEEP IT UP!!!
just completed ur series...loved it...
I loved the series - thankyou so much! - You may want to look into getting a Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) licence. - There is always people on the radio. Thanks again! loved the videos, Such amazing views.
I loved watching this series. Don't have a suggestion on what to do next, but I'm definitely excited for the next series 😁
Loved the series.. looking forwards to the next one ;)
amazing trip guys
Awesome series guys! Just watched the whole thing in a single sitting. Super informative and entertaining. I'm from Rhode Island and have always been curious about New Foundland. Great edits by the way!
A trip up the Labrador Coast would be great, but Avgas is almost non-existent. The coastal airports and villages have jet fuel delivered for both the airport and to supply the generator stations. If you could find a way to make it up to the Torngat Mountains National Park, you’d never regret it. There’s even a Canada Parks camp in the summer just in from Saglek Bay. You’ll need that 5 years for planning and logistics.
You guys are crazy 😂 I always try to find less annoying ways to travel and you guys are like, how about we make weather a major factor and let’s pack bear spray in case we need to have an emergency landing in bear country ...! Fun to watch, but dang, I’m too old for that kind of stress 😜 that landing at the light house though! Beautiful!
Btw, I get motion sickness just from watching too much of your no gimbal + drone footage in one go. Don’t know how you do it Becki! Btw, your resurgence of motion sickness is probably stress related. My own motion sickness is so much worse these days because pandemic + risk group 🤷♀️
Thank you for one of the most amazing series I've seen on RUclips! Incredible!!
Hell yes! Loved the series!
-Will
Only just subscribed after seeing two of your very professional vlog and it looks like you are killing it thanks for sharing cheers
You guys have done more for Newfoundland Tourism than any paid advertisement. At least it's now on my bucket list minus the helicopter trip: I need an helico and a pilot license for that( one day).
Aurelio Marty haha thanks so much!!
Oh hold up! I didn't realise there was another episode! I'm going to go watch you land in the backyard before I continue with this video. I will return in 12 minutes!
That was interesting hearing the MVP and LVP lists. Makes complete sense to me. You should really try camping in other parts of the world. North America just seems miserable to me. I think you would really appreciate Australian summer camping, assuming you don't mind warm weather. Glad I got to hear more about the final leg of the trip.
Ahh I love a good debrief on a sunday! Great video breakdown. I love a great behind the scenes story!
Mitchell Hussey thanks much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love love loved the series! Thanks for the recap and again y’all rock!!
Love @Austin Claborn been following him for a while now ❤❤
