I really would love to make it back to Ireland someday before I die. I have such fond memories of the music and the people there. One of the greatest trips of my life.
Barney was a one-off. They broke the mould when they made him. The colour, the ornamentation, the tastefulness... No banjo player in Ireland comes close to him, even to this day.
@@waynerainsford2825 Gerry is probably the best amongst the living players of Ireland. But Barney had something else. I've listened to his recordings for 40-years and he's still my "go to" for inspiration. People will differ, I'm sure 😉
@@waynerainsford2825 ruclips.net/video/xUWjRBnVQUc/видео.htmlsi=w87kwgSBXumDVk5R Do take a moment to hear Barney's brother. You'll be glad you did. Lovely bit of banjo playing.
Brings back memories. I've played in the very same spot with a friend during our road trip around Ireland in the early 70s. I met Micho too. wonderful musician and very warm hearted man. aspiring whistle players would do well to listen to his style of playing. RIP.
Barney was once asked to sing a song. He politely declined saying he had a voice like a corncrake. Ive only two notes in me head he declared and one of them is flat. 🎵
Very nice and interesting, video, good atmosphere. Hard to believe the hairdo was hip at those times, but I remember it as beeing normal among the youth, me included. Wonder where CR gets all that video stuff from, splendig word. Greetings from D
I had to pause and replay. Thought it was a swimming hat! This goes far beyond a mere egg in the nest. This is a paradigm shift in the way that we've previously conceptualised this method of hair management.
At first glance, I was going to say it was a combination of male pattern baldness and mad Irish hair. On second glance, it appears that his hair has been shaved in a tonsure-like fashion. Could it be because he's a practicing monk? Maybe. Could it be that he got drunk the night before and his mates thought it would be funny to shave his head like that? Possible also. For all I know, there's a tradition at that festival that one man must shave his head in a ridiculous way. One thing's for sure, he shows no apparent signs of self-consciousness about it.

Wow, Barney. He played the banjo, the accordion, he could sing, he danced, he had one of history's great beards. What a man!
But did he have a sleeping bag 😂😂
But can he win the Open?
It’s mad. Ireland has such a great history of great music
Aye
And a couple of days ago, I saw him playing a violin or fiddle in an early vid
Wow Ennis looks the exact same 43 years later.
The Ireland I miss
The money i would pay to hear music like this played publicly in Ireland this day in age (2021)
We have been laid waste once again, but this time by our own, we will not endure this time around.

Was it a hair growing weekend festival. Hair, Hair, everywhere.
The Celtic Tiger and it's downfall and the opening up of Eastern in 2004 have destroyed the uniqueness of Ireland.... it's all gone.
Really eh? That's sad. Something similar is happening in my part of the world also.
Nonsense. This is still here for those who want it.
Does anyone know if this is from a particular documentary? Would love to watch the entire thing.

Anyone know what reel Barney is playing? It sounds similar to the Congress reel but it sounds different also. Could just be some improv?
The first tune is Farewell to Ireland the second is The Congress
