Metal Gear Solid 2 - How to Beat the MG RAYs on Extreme (Rose Method, guide in description)

This footage is from my recent MGS2 Extreme difficulty Big Boss ranking run. This strategy may take quite a few tries to get down, but it's definitely worth it if you're struggling with this fight, and also if you're aiming to get that elusive Big Boss ranking.
Run a few steps forward, equip the Stinger and shoot the RAYs in the following order - middle RAY knee, middle RAY head, right RAY knee, right RAY head, left RAY knee, left RAY head. Repeat this once more until you have damaged all RAYs twice. Now shoot the middle RAY knee, middle RAY head and then the right RAY head only. All the RAYs will now move to specific spots.
Unequip the Stinger and cartwheel backwards, as the RAY right in front of you will jump onto the platform, and the force will knock you off your feet if you get hit. Cartwheel to the right to avoid its next stomp as well, then equip the Stinger and shoot it in the knee and the head, and RAY A1 is down. Unequip the Stinger, run to the right and get the Stinger ammo, and make sure to stay exactly on this spot, as this will auto-replenish your ammo so you don't run out. Equip the Stinger and shoot the RAY to the right in the knee and the head, and RAY A2 is down. Turn to the left, and this RAY will jump onto the platform. Shoot this RAY in the knee and the head, then knee and head again, and RAY A3 is down.
RAY A4 and RAY A5 will approach the platform, but DO NOT focus on RAY A5, DO NOT even look at it, ONLY focus on RAY A4, which is the left one out of the two. Shoot RAY A4 in the knee, then head, then knee again, then head again, and it will then jump onto the platform. Shoot it in the knee, then head, then knee again, then head again, and RAY A4 is down. Here comes the tricky part - by not focusing on RAY A05E (which looks like ROSE in the game text font, hence the name "Rose Method"), this RAY stays inactive for the rest of this battle if you can keep the timing relatively tight and keep your shots accurate.
Whilst RAY A4 is leaving the platform, shoot RAY B1 in the knee and the head, then after it takes one step, do a non-locked-on shot slightly off to the right of RAY B1's knee and lock on afterwards, and when that hits, you can lock on and shoot it in the head. This non-locked-on shot is done is avoid hitting the RAY on the platform which is leaving. The RAY you've damaged will then jump onto the platform, and you can then rinse and repeat this tactic for each new RAY, making sure to ignore RAY A05E on the right, until you have dispatched 20 RAYs (if following this method, RAY E01L will be the last one you destroy). I did mess up the timing slightly, but I was still able to get away with it, so don't fret too much if you get slightly out of rhythm :)

I finally beat them last night... I didn't use this exact method, I used a different one, but adapted it and my final version actually used a few of your moves... It wasn't as slick as yours, yours was like clockwork, but BARUCH HaShem it worked and I finished the game with ALL the extreme dogtags and I never have to put myself through that again!

Every time i try this i get to maybe the B series and then one of them lasers my ass!!! im a little lost as to why?

It gets too close. If you get to the point you know it’s about to shoot the lever, run to the side and shoot the stinger into its open mouth

I think there’s an intentional thing here built in by the devs… Rose doesn’t want to hurt Raiden and Raiden doesn’t want to hurt Rose so you ensure A05E isn’t involved in the fight and you can survive 😅
