Things to consider when buying a jointer: 1.straight knives are difficult to adjust/set up properly 2. Individual Cutter heads can be either 2 sided or 4 sided (go with 4) 3. Extension tables are absolutely needed for long stock 4. Table material (aluminum, cast, Teflon etc) is a personal preference, but should be considered when comparing. Love my CuTech 6" jointer and Wahuda spiral head planer!

Pretty sure cutech makes all of these jointers. All made in the same factory and companies get to pick a couple modifications. All basically the same thing, including this bauer one.

You can get Grizzly free shipping if ordered through HD.
The body of the Bauer looks like the body of the Shopfox W1829, but the handles on the table ends are different.

I very glad to hear Dustin's surgery went well, Jeff! As a veteran of many different types of surgery, I can say his experience is not always normal. I have a Craftsman jointer, but it's quite old with a three blade system. I quite satisfied with it. Whether the extra blade or the age contributes to that, I don't know. I'm happy with everything from Harbor Freight except the Chicago Electric table saw and miter saw. I suspect the Bauer to be of acceptable quality. Thanks for the breaking news! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤

Not sure how many serious woodworkers would consider the Bauer jointer, but it might be just the ticket for a beginner or novice.

I can't speak to jointers specifically. Harbor Freight seems to be writing some "best of" specs for their OEMs. Their new tools are less of a clone.

I bought an entire shop full of older Rockwell, Dewalt, and delta tools.. Couple craftsman pieces.. Paid $1000 for all of it... They just wanted it gone.. Even got a central vac dust collector system... 14" radial arm Saw.. Big wood band saw.. Metal band saw... Metal chop saw.. A big ocy/acet torch setup with 300cf o2 bottle and 145cf acet.. Full.. Older Miller stick welder. Jointer.. Table saw.. Router table.. Disc/belt sander. Spindle sander.. Planer.. Miter saw.. Drill press... And more.. Cabinets.. Benches.. And many hand and power tools. The entire shop.. All older stuff but decent and maintained.. I rented a Ryder truck and cleaned it all out... Now i need a bigger shop to integrate this stuff with mine..

I suspect that this will be a decent benchtop jointer. The problem is these benchtop jointers, no matter how well made, are all-but useless for most woodworkers. Here's why: The primary job of a jointer is to flatten one face of a board and to straighten (and square to the face) one edge of the board. The length of the jointer's tables determine the maximum length of board it can flatten and straighten. (The width of the tables determine how wide a board it can flatten.) As a general rule, an experienced woodworker can straighten the edge of a board that is at most twice the length of the jointer's tables. Less experienced woodworkers will struggle to straighten a board that is twice the length of the jointer and will be limited to working with shorter boards. Of course, the problem with these benchtop planer is they are so short that they cannot be used effectively for many common woodworking projects. Need to straighten several boards to glue up a top for a desk or a table? A benchtop planer will work for small desks or a nightstand, but it will be iffy for anything using boards much longer than 4.5 feet.
Unless a woodworker knows that all they will be making are smaller projects, I believe they'll be better off getting a full-size jointer. A longer bed makes a huge difference.

I am a woodworker, and I have a few comments on the Bauer benchtop jointer. The 4-sided inserts, when dull or damaged, should be able to be rotated, giving you 4 shots at cutting before replacement. Segmented vs helical. That's a cause for concern. If segmented means that the cutters are arranged in a straight line, the quality of cut is likely to be inferior to that from a helical cutter head. I don't think that I've ever seen a straight segmented cutter head.

It is likely spiral, but not helical.

    Re: vevor
The best course of action is to not buy from them in the first place but if you do carp on something and it arrives broken or defective and they don't handle it properly from the beginning, folks should immediately dispute the charge on the ENTIRE purchase including any shipping fees resulting in a chargeback and you keep the dud items for refurbishment or scrap the metal and get something for your trouble. When they rack up enough chargebacks their merchant rate will double or triple and if it continues they will be completely blocked from getting a merchant account which effectively kills their direct sales business completely.

12 cutters is very low, the cutters almost look randomly placed. Would rather have one of those shellix cutters where it's jam packed. Sadly those shelix cutter heads cost more than this entire jointer. But I'm only going to bother with a jointer if it's a quality beast.

Relatively new to wood working. If you have a planer and a table saw, why would you need a jointer? You can joint on the table saw. Somebody explain what I'm missing here?

    • @Ekrindul
      @Ekrindul Месяц назад +4

You can do it with a table saw and a planer, but if you need to run say 20 boards for a project, the jointer will be much more efficient.

I am a long time woodworker. I have a Delta 37-190 6in jointer purchased in the mid or later 90's. This is a cast iron base and fence machine with an open steel stand. This design was sold by many companies back then.
It is a 2 @ 6in wide straight knife machine with I think a 1750 rpm induction motor. I replaced the one piece belt with a segmented belt since it does not get much use and I wanted to eliminate the one piece belt getting a "set" from lack of use. I love the segmented belt.
This machine works well at some level. By this I mean is can easily remove up to 1/8in of material in one pass. I have the machine set to remove only 1/64in in one pass. I am able to get wood to be level across the width with this machine. I am not able to get the wood to be level from front-to-back. This could be operator error. I can say I am able to run a piece of wood which is level from front-to-back through a single pass on this machine and then get a piece which is no longer level from front-to-back. I have a 3ft long steel straight edge which has been used to set the infeed and outfeed tables to be parallel. I feel that my results may be due to operator error. Perhaps I am pushing on one end more than the other.
I feel that whether my jointer is straight blade or multi-blade, I think I would have the same results in use, namely I could convert a piece of lumber with flat faces to a piece of lumber with a curved face.
My jointer now sits gathering dust, which it does equally well with each passing day.

The bench top ones have tables that are difficult to level/keep level/keep aligned properly, they're under powered, and difficult to use to get consistent quality cuts. Regardless of brand, try to avoid them.
