- DIY on how to repair or replace the turn signal or wiper switch on a Toyota Camry, Solara or Lexus ES300.
Some may experience intermittent operation of the turn signals or windshield wipers after many miles. Symptoms include the turn signal not functioning at all on one or both sides, or the switch having to be in a certain spot to work, despite the bulbs and relays checking out okay. This is usually due to worn contacts in the turn signal or wiper switch.
The steering wheel and airbag DO NOT have to be removed to access these switches. Three screws are removed from the trim surrounding the steering wheel allowing the covers to be popped off.
Two screws hold each the turn signal and wiper switch into their housings, and the electrical connector can be disconnected to remove the switch from the car.
Once open, the switch contacts can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and sandpaper to allow for proper contact. If the contacts are worn, warm the contact pad with a soldering iron and drop a blob of solder into the copper, to build up the area.
The turn signal switch can also be upgraded to one with a fog-light ring if equipping a vehicle with factory wired fogs.
The wiper switch can also be replaced with one that has a one-touch mist function, and should be electrically compatible with the car (plug and play). Авто/Мото
This is definitely the best how-to video I’ve ever seen. I particularly appreciate the absence of a long intro consisting of useless information. Clear and concise! Love it.
That's my style. To the point
This may well be the best how to I've ever seen. Well filmed, edited and narrated. Clear and concise instructions. Absolutely terrific.
Finally an actual video of how it is working, not a 15min video where it shows how to take the lever out. Thank you
Never in my life, did I imagine that replacing the wiper switch would be THAT easy. Thanks!
Well on this model it is. Some require steering wheel removal
Even easier if you can find someone to lie on the hood during rainstorms and operate a squeegee.
100% agree with you! I kept worrying about airbag issues. This is super easy!
You just saved me at least $100.00! Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video!!
Thanks
I would like to think you for the video. I have a 2008 4Runner where the intermittent function quit working a year ago. I have been using the slow & fast mode. The only other option was buying a new wiper switch, $178.00. So i took it apart after watching your video & noticed that one of the copper contacts was worn off. I took my soldering kit out & placed a "Bump" of solder on the copper pad. The wipers work great now! Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video.
+Tra Vinh Angel I'm glad you found this useful! This method helped me save money too, when I bought my solara I had the same problem. It has been fixed for over 3 years now.
Hey Tra would you be willing to fix my intermittent wiper if I sent it to you?
😊🙏 thank you so much for going straight to the point and not talking so much. Wow if only others could do the same.
Great demo. Easy to follow. My turn signal switch has exactly the symptoms as described above for a few months. My toyota tech manual told me to remove steering wheel. Looks so difficult. That is why I haven't try it. After viewing your demo, it is a really simple job. Fix the problem in a short time. Thanks
No need to remove steering wheel! I noticed that on some forums as well, hence I posted this to help out. I think thats Gen 3 camry specific. Dealing with an airbag is too much work.
my friend - there is nothing i can say but thanks. for me the problem was intermittent, worked only about 1/3 of the time. i get frustrated when folks do not use their blinkers, i include myself. i have searched for the problem so many times and never found the problem. Found this youtube and had it fixed in 20 minutes - as soon as i opened the switch I could see it was gunked up. CRC contact cleaner, paper towel - did not have a burnishing tool - took the switch apart and cleaned it out and put it together - it works beautifully . the video made it easy. I owe you bro. Cheers have a great day.
+moon00dog I am happy to hear that it worked out for you, thanks
Thank you so much for this video! There was a small divot in the 'U' shaped contact bar causing my right turn signal not to work. I cleaned and filled the bar and the contacts with solder, then sanded them smooth and now my turn signals work great! Great instructions!
Glad it helped
Easy to follow and to the point. And its the quickest and not hard to do. Great video
man this is super easy, ive been driving around with a bum blinker for like over a year i know what im gonna do this weekend
+djclown7pb Cool , hope it goes well for you, let me know. The switch isn't hard to locate in a junkyard should you need a replacement, I think its shared with other Toyota models.
+speedkar99 cool right on thank you! and its should be pretty easy
Was it easy?
Great video. You saved me the cost of a new wiper switch. With your video I was able to clean and lube my old one saving me the money.
Just did it on my 2015 Tundra it took less than 10 min! Changed the only thing I was not happy with on my truck! Thanks for the video.
+Ben Lindner Good to hear, though why was it malfunctioning on a 2 year old truck?
Great vid! 2000 Tacoma. Not quite the same, but enough info to get me there. Cleaned up the contacts and ready for another 16 years. Thanks!!!
+Troy McConaughey Glad you got it working
@ ff5gus
My car is a 1999 Solara.
I've also got a 2005 Lexus ES330 and the procedure is exactly the same.
Helpful video. I used a drop of electrical solder with a iron over the contact and it worked like a gem.
+Waseem Ahmad Hey, glad it worked out for you.
simple and concise directions and explanations! Super easy to understand! Thank you! Best video I have found.
+Ashley Coleman Thanks for the compliments
Quick and to the point. Very helpful. Thank you!!
You are welcome
Thanks, your video helped me. Super easy. Wish I had put intermittent wipers in years ago.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for saving me $200 or more (parts/labor). My '99 Camry contacts were just full of some lubricant greasy looking stuff, so I just used electrical contact cleaner ($10 at O'Reilly) and they now work. There is just a very tiny bit of a continuity issue because I believe the contacts are a bit worn, so tomorrow a co-worker pal of mine and I are going to add a bit of solder to build them up and see how that goes. Again, thank you so much!!!
+asdf asdf glad I could help!
Used this to change switch on 2003 Corolla thank you.
Thank you. Nice and concise and clear instructions. Job done! And it works too! 😀
+Amanda O'Leary Thanks I'm glad it worked for you and you enjoyed the presentation.
I appreciate this video very much! I had grease impeding my left turn signal. After finding the copper contacts, wiping it out with a tissue solved it right away.Your explanations and video are to the point. Thank you very much for this!
+Jud Johnson thanks. Glad it helped.
+Jud Johnson thanks. Glad it helped.
+Jud Johnson thanks. Glad it helped.
+Jud Johnson thanks. Glad it helped.
great DIY!!!
Amazing detailed video. Thank you very much!
+Pedro Antunes Thank you
Thank you so much for the vid, every other link lead me to someone swapping out a signal light and not the switch.
RaithSienar Glad you found it helpful.
thanks for this, hope it helps save my wiper selector on my Delica
how do you remove the plastic on the 2012 prius? thanks. great video!!
One of the best videos for diy...thanx alot !
+hansie claassen thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it.
great video, thxs. My corolla doesn't have a tilt wheel and there was one additional screw just beside the key area accessible only once the bottom shroud cover is removed. To fix the lack of signal operation i just cleaned the contacts, sanded all the build up off of the small slider unit and also stretched the spring out a bit more so there would be more pressure against the contacts.
Glad it worked out for you.
Thank you very much, my crazy ex started kicking me while driving and broke the wiper switch and I can’t turn them off. Very glad to know it’s an easy fix.
Nice job and well made vid, thanks man!
thnx man. i dont want ur car give u a lot of troubles so that we get a number of videos but i really appreciate the videos and keep them coming
Thanks. My car isn't troublesome, I just keep up with the maintenance.
You make it look so easy!
It is easy !
Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy. Thanks for the video!
Excellent video. Thank you!

+Sergio ink Glad it helped, hopefully it fixes your Chevy's problem.
helps a lot for my 99 corolla, thanks bro
+joe hou Your welcome
super useful. no other video online to help with this on my mk4 supra thanks
Awesome! Glad it helped. Didn't know it's the same as supra.
A born teacher, many thanks
I wonder someday if I could actually qualify for a teaching job haha
Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video, Bless you kind sir
You are very welcome
Great video thanks man!
+Joseph your welcome
You are doing a great great great job.
Save me $100.00. The contacts were all greasy black yuck... Cleaned them off and now turn signal works perfectly! Thank you
+rack0041 Glad it helped you out!!
Did you know so many garagists do not want to do these kinds of works ? Can you come to Belgium ? :-) - amazing video !
Thank you
Nice work I like it
I have a strange problem when opening the top cover. All the warning lights go on and off. Second time key didnt work a few times, and then went away. I still cant find a way to remove it . Its an 08 saturn astra, lever is sold alone, and I cant find a switch assembly. Mine many times doesnt have the light stay on like it should but still works.
Do you have any videos for wiper switch removal on a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica?
many thanks for the video.........
Great video. It helped me save $56 on a new switch.
Wow they are that expensive eh
Mine, in a Toyota Tacoma, is $136
thank you !!!!!!!
Excellent video! I replaced my turn signal switch, but I'm now having a hard time snapping the upper plastic piece in place. Any ideas? Thank you.
Thanks senior ❤️
Welcome
Tried this on a 2008 Lexus rx350.. It was a no go
You had the same issue with the turn signal?
thumbs up, awesome instructional video
Thanks
This is perfect, thank you for a straight forward video! I took mine off, there is a black ink like substance in the same place there was a little black on yours. What is that and do I wipe that all off?
+zach crabtree Thanks. The grease is there for lubrication. If it's burnt then you should sand the terminals down until shiny again.
thank you nice clear simple!!
+Michael Coriglianol Glad it helped. Did you end up replacing yours?
speedkar99 yes thats why i found it so helllfull haha thanks again!!
Great video thx u saved me much money
I have a 2005 Lexus LS430. Looks like the whole thing is one piece, turn signal switch and windshield washer switch. Can you confirm?
Thank you.
Hello Sir, thanks for the video. Do I need to uninstall the battery before start to replace the new switch? Or just straight away replace directly. Thanks
You don't have to but it's safer to disconnect the battery.
I have a 95 fzj80. I can't find any info on replacement. I'm wondering if it is removed the same way ? Or do I have to remove wheel etc.
I am attempting to replace the blinker switch in my husband Kia optina. it got caught on the Keychain in my husband pocket so when he say down, I broke it almost right off.
I wanted to know if the procedure will be Any different for an Optima and is there any concern for the airbag deploying in my face?
Great video! My '97 Camry wiper switch is malfunctioning. Now I feel I can fix it myself. Thanks!
Mine isndoin the same. They won't turn off only speed up or slow down let me know if it fixes yours
Mine will turn off, but the wipers stop instead of running on down to the bottom of the windshield. I bought a used switch off ebay to replace it, but if cleaning the contacts will work I'll just do that. I'll let you know how it turns out.
+Gary Hawkins I think that has to do with the motor or relay more than it has to do with the switch.
Where would I find the relay? The motor seems to work fine. The wipers work on continuous and intermediate settings. They just won't return to bottom when i turn them off.
Okay, after 3 years I finally got my wipers fixed. It was a bad switch. I found one online for $129. The local Toyota dealer wanted $220 for a new one. And this is a 1997 model, 22 years old! At first I thought I had a bad motor but that wasn't the problem. It's a good thing too because I could not find a motor that was an exact fit.
YOU'RE A GOD
Excellent video! My wipers won't shut off. Fuses have been checked so we believe it's in the wiper switch so once I have the wiper switch off, how do I clean them? I have the electrical contact cleaner. I just don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks
I guess it would be the same method.
video was very helpful =]
chaseabrickwall Thanks
Can I do this on a 2017 toyota camry
Thanks show save me a ton of money!
Glad it helped
Hey 2011 nissan cube replaced switch my signal flash instead of flashing for each side only front passenger one works also on up or down what can it be
Thanks!
+Garrett Hine your welcome
Thanks
Awsome videos man I'm not a mechanic but atleast i can show my mobile mechanic the one for the water pump I just bought a 2000 Toyota Solara v6 5 speed.
Thanks. Its an easy DIY, all you need is a screwdriver.
Awesome
Fantastic!
Thanks Bob
I did the repair today and now it works perfectly.
Thanks you
excellent video. is process much different for a 2008 Yaris with signal that won't self-cancel?
+colblu44 self cancel is different, thats mechanical , theres a spinning tab that flicks a cam on the turn signal switch. Take it out and see if it works I'll have a video on that in the coming weeks
Thanks for the video. My switch works fine but the plastic cap on the end is cracked on Lexus ls430. Any idea if the cap alone is replaceable?
+Ed DeBolt I never opened one up to the extent of the cap, you'd pretty much have to experiment with that, or just get a used switch from a junkyard.
Does this work for a 2018 Highlander?
Hi. Thanks for the video. Can I also clean the contact part for the fog light switch? If yes, which is it? Thanks
Not sure on the fog switch, you'll have to take it apart and see how the contacts function, since its a ring on the turn signal shaft.
Can this happen to a Mitsubishi mirage 2019
Great video. In replacing the wiper switch does it also replace the intermittent relay? Also can I use a 2001 Camry wiper control/switch in a 2001 Toyota Avalon. Is it the same part.
+John Midgley yes on most Toyota's the intermittent function is built into the switch.
Not sure if Avalon uses same as gen 4 or gen 5 Camry switch, or Lexus es300 but you van cross reference part numbers to find out.
Man, can you tell me how I can do this with my 1996 subaru wrx. I have a right sided vehicle and I can't find any replacements
Does this work in a 2006 Toyota Highlander?
My 1996 camry wiper switch dosent have the 2 screws facing you up and down. I have no idea how to remove it
I'm trying the same thing on a 2007 Camry Hybrid. Seems like the wheel design is different.
did this on my mums cay today .. I replaced the relay but still was clicking .. pulled the indicator level out and cleaned all the contacts inside .. from the summer heat the grease had melted and was oozing out everywhere and the contacts had all this black grease and crap .. sprayed with electronic contact cleaner and a toothbrush .. cleaned it all up .. dried it and put back together .. no more clicks .. touch wood .. thanks
You are an excellent mechanic and instructor. Great video. Thanks. My problem on my '06 Avalon is that on intermittent, it sometimes speeds up to a more rapid wiper pace and then slows back down. For example after one swipe it may be another 20 seconds before the next swipe, but then at some point it may suddenly do 3 consecutive swipes in rapid succession with no pause in between, even though I have not changed the wiper setting. Do you think it needs a whole new wiper switch?
You sure it doesn't have variable wipers? Some cars vary this with vehicle speed....or it's automatic
@@speedkar99 I don't think so. The vehicle speed is consistent but the wiper speed varies randomly.
Damn that was too easy and straight forward
Anyone knows how to fix the plastic part at the end of the signal shift stick? My signal works fine, it’s just the plastic at the end to change the light on/ off/ automatic keeps popping out. Thanks in advance
Thanks for the upload
+rlgonzalez04 alright
Where can I get the switch for the wiper??
Awesome , love the Video sir. Thank you. (Suriname South-America)
Does it always work if you clean the switch contacts , I have an 2007 Toyota Vits . (Yaris)
Yes
What year is that lexus. I own a 2003 es300.
Sir when i indicate on the right side, the indicators blink but after taking turn they do not get off automatically,,i have to turn them off but in the left side they get off auto..
Can you tell me what can be the problem
The switches look identical to those on my 1994 Celica. I will try to clean them because my low beams stay on with the switch in off position.
it this the same as tarago 92
Any idea if both the cover removal instructions and the turn signal part are the same for a 1992 4Runner as they are shown in this video? From my limited research I suspect neither are the same. Hope I'm wrong.
Check OEM part numbers and cross reference
