I would like to think you for the video. I have a 2008 4Runner where the intermittent function quit working a year ago. I have been using the slow & fast mode. The only other option was buying a new wiper switch, $178.00. So i took it apart after watching your video & noticed that one of the copper contacts was worn off. I took my soldering kit out & placed a "Bump" of solder on the copper pad. The wipers work great now! Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video.
+Tra Vinh Angel I'm glad you found this useful! This method helped me save money too, when I bought my solara I had the same problem. It has been fixed for over 3 years now.
my friend - there is nothing i can say but thanks. for me the problem was intermittent, worked only about 1/3 of the time. i get frustrated when folks do not use their blinkers, i include myself. i have searched for the problem so many times and never found the problem. Found this youtube and had it fixed in 20 minutes - as soon as i opened the switch I could see it was gunked up. CRC contact cleaner, paper towel - did not have a burnishing tool - took the switch apart and cleaned it out and put it together - it works beautifully . the video made it easy. I owe you bro. Cheers have a great day.
Great demo. Easy to follow. My turn signal switch has exactly the symptoms as described above for a few months. My toyota tech manual told me to remove steering wheel. Looks so difficult. That is why I haven't try it. After viewing your demo, it is a really simple job. Fix the problem in a short time. Thanks
No need to remove steering wheel! I noticed that on some forums as well, hence I posted this to help out. I think thats Gen 3 camry specific. Dealing with an airbag is too much work.
Thank you so much for this video! There was a small divot in the 'U' shaped contact bar causing my right turn signal not to work. I cleaned and filled the bar and the contacts with solder, then sanded them smooth and now my turn signals work great! Great instructions!
+djclown7pb Cool , hope it goes well for you, let me know. The switch isn't hard to locate in a junkyard should you need a replacement, I think its shared with other Toyota models.
Thank you for saving me $200 or more (parts/labor). My '99 Camry contacts were just full of some lubricant greasy looking stuff, so I just used electrical contact cleaner ($10 at O'Reilly) and they now work. There is just a very tiny bit of a continuity issue because I believe the contacts are a bit worn, so tomorrow a co-worker pal of mine and I are going to add a bit of solder to build them up and see how that goes. Again, thank you so much!!!
I appreciate this video very much! I had grease impeding my left turn signal. After finding the copper contacts, wiping it out with a tissue solved it right away.Your explanations and video are to the point. Thank you very much for this!
Thank you very much, my crazy ex started kicking me while driving and broke the wiper switch and I can’t turn them off. Very glad to know it’s an easy fix.
Thanks to this great video I was able to replace the switch. However, the wipers don't respond to any adjustment on the intermittent setting. Any idea of what the issue could be? The wiper motor maybe?
Great video. My 98 4runner got a faulty contact in the turn signal switch. Turning the blinker on will often times turn off the headlights. Don't want to be inadvertently flashing cars.
Thanks so much! I have a Peugeot 206 cc and the auto rain censor doesn't turn in any position, seems stuck for some reason. Viper sensor is fine thoguh. Might i need to clean it or change the unit. I'll check it. Thanks again. 😊👍🏻
great video, thxs. My corolla doesn't have a tilt wheel and there was one additional screw just beside the key area accessible only once the bottom shroud cover is removed. Would have liked to see more about the wiper switch contacts. Mine is malfunctioning and need some help determining how to fix it. I have a 1997 toyota camry.
Excellent video! My wipers won't shut off. Fuses have been checked so we believe it's in the wiper switch so once I have the wiper switch off, how do I clean them? I have the electrical contact cleaner. I just don't want to mess anything up.
Awsome videos man I'm not a mechanic but atleast i can show my mobile mechanic the one for the water pump I just bought a 2000 Toyota Solara v6 5 speed.
Hi my windshield wipers stopped working. They work like once in a blue but randomly and only for a few seconds then they stop. If I replace the wiper switch could this fix it? I was told the relay then told the switch. This was coming from a good Mechanic.
@@speedkar99 this one mechanic that I watch on here told me to find the relay on the motor and then put the wipers on and tap on the relay and if the wipers work every time I tap the relay that it has to be the relay. I have a video on my page of how my wipers work.
+colblu44 self cancel is different, thats mechanical , theres a spinning tab that flicks a cam on the turn signal switch. Take it out and see if it works I'll have a video on that in the coming weeks
Mine will turn off, but the wipers stop instead of running on down to the bottom of the windshield. I bought a used switch off ebay to replace it, but if cleaning the contacts will work I'll just do that. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Where would I find the relay? The motor seems to work fine. The wipers work on continuous and intermediate settings. They just won't return to bottom when i turn them off.
Okay, after 3 years I finally got my wipers fixed. It was a bad switch. I found one online for $129. The local Toyota dealer wanted $220 for a new one. And this is a 1997 model, 22 years old! At first I thought I had a bad motor but that wasn't the problem. It's a good thing too because I could not find a motor that was an exact fit.

Thanks for the great video. I cleaned everything and the wipers work however they don't return to the off position...they just stop wherever they are on the windshield when turned off. Any ideas? Thanks
+Sammy Wechsler thanks. The stopping part has to do with the mechanism itself. Here's an idea on how it works: ruclips.net/video/03PmLqySfPw/видео.html
Thanks for the response. I have a feeling though it's the switch on the arm itself. Nothing happens when rotating from "off, int, low, high". Any way to repair or replace the arm?
Any idea if both the cover removal instructions and the turn signal part are the same for a 1992 4Runner as they are shown in this video? From my limited research I suspect neither are the same. Hope I'm wrong.
I need to replace these, the shop told me to put new on they would need to be clabrated and wont work unless clabrated. Its a 2011 corolla. Am i being lied to? So they can make an extra $. Cruse control switch needs replaced as well.
rtjlupolove66 Why do the switches need to be replaced on a 4 year old car? They don't usually wear out that quick. There is no calibration for the wiper, turn signal or cruise control switches, it should be plug and play on a basic car like the Corolla.
I have a Toyota Avensis. The stalk is the same, but it has wires also coming out of the top. It appears the stalk cannot be just plugged out like that one. I want to apply a dot solder but the whole thing will not come out.
+John Burns you might need to pull off the steering wheel, there could be hidden screws, or a small tab that you have to depress. See my clock spring and steering column videos for more.

speedkar99 thanks for the advice, I decided to use the after market switch that came with the fog lights. And I returned the headlight/turn signal switch back to pep boys.
Yes, as I suggested. The wiring would be a bit more complicated if you were running it up to the stock, since your car probably doesn't have the extra switch wire built into the harness.
This just happened to my 05 tacoma wipers. It works on fast and really fast mode, but not the intermitent(slow mode with speed option), also when I use the washer fluid it wont turn the wipers, it just squirts the fluid, but if I put it in the working modes and suddenly switch it to the intermitent mode it stop the wiper at wherever it is at. Hi I have a 2008 Jetta VW and every time it rains hard the windshield wipers stop working and the turning signals and sometimes even the lights I have taken it to the mechanic and they could never find anything wrong with it ..... After three days everything starts working again any ideas to why this may happen?
+Mare Chung You've got water entering the electrical system in the car. After 3 days the water dries out and things start working again. Start with all the external lights on the car. Check for loose, corroded or frayed connections or contacts with the bulb. Check for water intrusion in the housings or wiring after a rainstorm or car wash.
+Rebecca Fields I can't tell you, I haven't sat in one of those caddy's, but if you see screws around your steering cover, take them off and give it a shot.
Great video. I'm currently dealing with the wipers stuck on. Both low and high work, however intermittent and off do not respond. 2003 Cadillac CTS. I removed fuse to keep wipers off. The switch also has the push option for a quick couple wipes... It was when I engaged this that the wipers stayed on. Will replacing the switch resolve this problem? Thank you.
+D. Coogan I have a feeling it might be the switch itself causing an internal short. Cross reference the GM part number and see if that switch is shared with other GM cars. You can nab a used one pretty cheap at a junkyard.
+speedkar99 Thank you for the prompt reply. The junkyard is a great idea, but I already ordered an AC Delco switch through Walmart... Not too proud about that, but I couldn't find any comparable prices. $46.99. I plan on attempting the replacement myself, seems straightforward... Having to remove the steering wheel is intimidating, but after reading the actual procedure, it is almost as simple as removing a standard steering column. Again... Thank you very much for your help.
+Xuan Mai It might be the little activator on the switch itself to cancel the signal. Try swapping the lever first before opening the steering wheel mechanism.
This is perfect, thank you for a straight forward video! I took mine off, there is a black ink like substance in the same place there was a little black on yours. What is that and do I wipe that all off?
You are an excellent mechanic and instructor. Great video. Thanks. My problem on my '06 Avalon is that on intermittent, it sometimes speeds up to a more rapid wiper pace and then slows back down. For example after one swipe it may be another 20 seconds before the next swipe, but then at some point it may suddenly do 3 consecutive swipes in rapid succession with no pause in between, even though I have not changed the wiper setting. Do you think it needs a whole new wiper switch?

Man, can you tell me how I can do this with my 1996 subaru wrx. I have a right sided vehicle and I can't find any replacements
Check for water intrusion in the housings or wiring after a rainstorm or car wash.
thank you for replying i will give it a try and hopefully it works thank you again
About a month ago I replaced my wiper switch. $166. Now it is already stuck on again! What could that be?
Clean the contacts
Would this work on 2013 Toyota Yaris LE or do I need to remove the steering wheel?
Yes
@@speedkar99 thanks I appreciate your help
Tried this on a 2008 Lexus rx350.. It was a no go
You had the same issue with the turn signal?
Where can I get the switch for the wiper??
would this work with a 2001 Cadillac DeVille it looks similar so I'm curious
+Rebecca Fields I can't tell you, I haven't sat in one of those caddy's, but if you see screws around your steering cover, take them off and give it a shot.
The switches look identical to those on my 1994 Celica. I will try to clean them because my low beams stay on with the switch in off position.
My switch broke in my 2008 corolla and keeps turning on by itself, would removing the switch for now shut off the windshield wipers?
+prodiggy13 Yes it should. However, you wouldn't be able to turn on your wipers if something splashed you...
Does this work for a 2018 Highlander?
What if the switch works but feels wiggly??? Is it worth replacing? It just feel weird and funny and not as hard as before
Is it the same for a 2007 Camry?
Yea
Where do I send the check?`
To my email
@@speedkar99 Excellent video. Have you worked on an '05 Prius? No screws The damn thing has no way to get it off. Any ideas? Dynamite?
Great, hopefully the replacement is successful.
my Turn Signal Switch lever doesn't return after the car straight up, my mechanic said it's a lot of work and high replacement cost. Is he hustle me?
+Xuan Mai It might be the little activator on the switch itself to cancel the signal. Try swapping the lever first before opening the steering wheel mechanism.
how? can the lever be unbound?
Hi. Thanks for the video. Can I also clean the contact part for the fog light switch? If yes, which is it? Thanks
Not sure on the fog switch, you'll have to take it apart and see how the contacts function, since its a ring on the turn signal shaft.
This is perfect, thank you for a straight forward video! I took mine off, there is a black ink like substance in the same place there was a little black on yours. What is that and do I wipe that all off?
+zach crabtree Thanks. The grease is there for lubrication. If it's burnt then you should sand the terminals down until shiny again.
Can it works on 05 Avalon
Sure
Is it hard to fix the handle mine broke hello I'm new to your Channel thumbs up
Thanks for subscribing. Replacement is the same method. Not hard.
@@speedkar99 I have a Toyota Avalon 98 and you're welcome for my subscribe
You are an excellent mechanic and instructor. Great video. Thanks. My problem on my '06 Avalon is that on intermittent, it sometimes speeds up to a more rapid wiper pace and then slows back down. For example after one swipe it may be another 20 seconds before the next swipe, but then at some point it may suddenly do 3 consecutive swipes in rapid succession with no pause in between, even though I have not changed the wiper setting. Do you think it needs a whole new wiper switch?
You sure it doesn't have variable wipers? Some cars vary this with vehicle speed....or it's automatic
@@speedkar99 I don't think so. The vehicle speed is consistent but the wiper speed varies randomly.
