The thing many people do not know is that the dual-carriageway could have just one lane either side of the central reservation. This can be the case where a two way road with a 60mph national speed limit has a junction the engineers have made safer by adding a short section of two separate single lanes passing a side road which then is given a no right turn off the main road. The short separated section is now a dual-carriageway and speed limit is 70 mph on that section.

To add to this, something I recently found out is that on 2 lane roads without a central reservation it is not an offence to "undertake" on the left lane. Remember that the next time someone gets arsey and starts quoting the highway code.

Was this an AI video? It has all the hallmarks.

This is really important, as it affects the speed limit on a 'derestricted' limit. The first example, despite having two lanes of traffic would still be a 60-limit unless marked slower. It needs the divider to meet the criteria for 70 (unless marked)

Some drivers think that a dual carriageway is a road with more than 1 lane but that’s incorrect, as you correctly said in the video, a dual carriageway has a central reservation separating the 2 carriageways, it’s very important that drivers know the difference between a dual carriageway and a single carriageway because when the dual carriageway ends and the single carriageway starts you don’t want to continue driving at 70mph as you’d be speeding and breaking the law, when the dual carriageway ends and the single carriageway starts you need to be doing 60mph (if it’s safe to do so.)

The thingy with the fence inbetween the opposing traffic

The easiest way to remember is this. If you can roll a ball from one edge of the road all the way across to the other edge of the road where traffic flows the opposite way without hitting anything, then it's not a dual carriageway.

You only have to see the comments on social media to see how little of the Highway Code is known (or understood) by a lot of people.
It’s why we should compulsory re-testing every x number of years

Agree, but there's barely capacity for testing as is; never mind retesting.

@@MikesThinks Capacity would not be a problem because the system would, through necessity, grow to meet demand. The only reason nothing currently gets done about the long queues is that nobody in them is already dependant on driving.

Maybe the next question should be ‘what is the left lane of a motorway for?’ Nobody seems to know that one anymore either.
