I just have to say: I really, really appreciate the way you make a 4-star (or even a 3-star) book be a good thing. Sometimes some reviewers can make anything short of 5-stars seem disappointing, and I just find your approach very honest but also pleasant
I may have commented this before, I worked as a nurse and years ago now a lady I worked with knew details of every serial killer she knew birthday's and places number of victims dates of deaths of those victims. This woman appeared normal in every way but it was frightening if you mentioned a serial killer she could give a disertation.
yes learned recently that more than a few perfectly respectable women are big fans of serial killer stories both real and fictional and not sure what the attraction is⚛😀
I saw someone say that women's "Roman Empire" is murder, and I haven't stopped thinking about it. Thanks for always giving book recs I've never heard of - you're the best, Rachel! 🖤
Yes please to top 15! Ooo... Death of a Bookseller sounds like a really fun way to explore my problematic fascination with true crime. Thanks for your recs! 💀
Richard Chizmar wrote a series of books with Stephen King about Gwendy. I can't think of all the titles right now, but the first one is Gwendy's Button Box. The two men each have a style that works really well together.
You're just so good. Love your recommendations. Definitely added both Boogeymen to my shopping cart as well as Death of a Bookseller. As a lover of true crime who is also a bookseller, it spoke to me. Also, Delicate Condition sounds great!
The Bee Sting (Paul Murray), The First Bad Man (Miranda July), Paradais (Fernanda Melchor), Tampa (Alissa Nutting), Birnam Wood (Eleanor Catton). I previously mentioned Hawk Mountain.
I read Chasing the Boogeyman thanks to you. It was and is 1 of my all time favorite books. I have Becoming the Boogeyman and will be reading it soon. So glad to hear it’s as good as the first.
I am not sure if you have mentioned this book before but Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez is one of the most brutal, haunting, cruel, and well-written horror books that I have EVER read. I am a life-long horror reader and this book is indelibly printed on my psyche now. Please do read it if you can. She is phenomenally talented!
Thank you for suggesting Delicate Condition. Struggles with infertility are so common and finally seemed to have come out of taboo status. I know I considered IVF while trying for my rainbow baby and I know other people who have gone through IVF. So an account of the process and the ups and downs of what it would be like is really important to me and perhaps for other people to understand. I’ll definitely be checking it out.
I wonder what you’d think of ‘Boy Parts’ by Eliza Clarke, which gave me strong American Psycho vibes but the British version of that. It was one of my best dark reads of this year.
I was very sickened by Tender is the Flesh. Do you think Deliver Me will give me the same feeling? To this day that is the only book that made my stomach turn. 🤢 Usually I love and can handle dark books.
Have you read Black River Orchard yet? Would love to hear your thoughts on that (I do follow you on GR but might as well ask here for algorithm interaction)
rachel u sound like u have an interesting relationship with meat and the things u can do with it r u a vegetarian will immediately look up the nash and chizmar bks have heard a lot of rave reviews for chizmar happy u had a good experience with IVF as sadly so many do not recall the conception of the first IVF child and what an uproar it caused think she's a postal worker now though can't remember the name⚛😀
Since you like social commentary in fiction so much, have you ever read a book of this kind by an author who didn't agree with you ideologically? Because what I've found is that people don't actually enjoy fiction of this kind if they're not already converted to the author's point of view beforehand, and this raises the question as to why anyone should bother reading such fiction if its only purpose is to persuade.
That's a good point and I think you're right to an extent. I try to seek out opinions that challenge my views but I know I'm drawn to things that reinforce my beliefs. It's why I like work like Yellowface. It actually argued both sides and I was surprised that swayed in the opposite direction that I previously thought was "right"
Oh yes, do a top 15!! 👻

Oh thanks! It's always a challenge not to undersell or oversell a book. I try really hard to articulate my 3 & 4 Stars reads

😂
Omg slightly terrifying

I've been waffling on Death of a Bookseller, but I'm eager to give it a go after your thoughts. Deliver Me and Delicate Condition also sound great.

I listened to Delicate Condition audio, amazing. I’m reading The Last Caretaker, Jessica Strawser, so far very good ❤❤❤
I'll have to look that one up
Richard Chizmar co-wrote a series with Stephen King, the first of which is Gwendy's Button Box. So yes, I think there's a lot of influence there.
Oh yes I really need to read that series
You do, you really do! :)

I've been eyeing it for a while
Hey there
I absolutely loved Delicate Condition ❤ Need to watch the latest season of American Horror Story which is based on this.
So happy you also loved it!
I was very sickened by Tender is the Flesh. Do you think Deliver Me will give me the same feeling? To this day that is the only book that made my stomach turn. 🤢 Usually I love and can handle dark books.
It's more digestible than Tender but most books are
The guest list or daisy darker?
