I wouldn’t mind an electric car future if companies sold stuff like this. This thing is so cool and way better looking than any current electric vehicle.
I love the no-nonsense appearance of older trucks. All the way up to the 90s any pickup truck looked like your grandfather's old shotgun. Simple, honest and functional.
So do I... but do you know what I really love about old trucks? The no-nonsense way you can fix one in an afternoon and get where you need to go the next day. That's why actual "truck guys" love them. This isn't that. This is some rich guy's play thing.
Agreed. I’m a GM guy, but my all-time favorite truck bodystyle is this one, followed closely by the square (‘73-‘87) Chevy/GMC, with the ‘92-96/7 (‘97 for the 3/4- and 1-tons) Fords a slightly more distant third and late square (‘8?-‘92? ‘93?) Dodges an even more slightly distant fourth. Love an old, blocky, purposeful pickup body. I tend to like the fancier old trucks, but more base, stripper, work models in newer bodystyles. A clean, low-mile, older truck is the muscle car of the 2020s, as evidenced by their inappropriately high prices. No damn WAY is a ‘90s GM gas truck worth 15 grand unless it’s a Sy/Ty or a 454SS, but they go for that all too often.

Yeah, but this truck was made not long after the greatest time period as far as looks, and has been around long enough to be transformed into something to be in awe of. The Tesla truck was a fail as far as today's standards go. Maybe in about 20-50 years its style will be more perfected, but as of now, these prime trucks will walk all over a tesla truck when it comes to looks, durability, and overall class.

That's how you buy everything, right? For the 0.1% of the times... Then wait to buy an EV. Shocking once more, right? Just like gas engines of old, EVs will continue to improve. I bet if you bought a 1950s Ford, you couldn't get anywhere close to the towing and gas range of a 2022's F-150. That's simply technology improving. EVs will only get better from here.

I've often wished that someone would make a simple, affordable single-purpose electric pickup. Give this thing a bench seat and a more durable interior and this might just fit the bill.
You might have a point there. Even the rural "good ole boy" truck guys are accepting the Ford V6's with a turbo charger after the initial hatred. Fully electric, not sure they'll accept that yet.
Exactly! I don't quite get why do all electric vehicles "have" to be race cars. I get pleasure from the driving itself, and have no need for top speed.
@@deOliveiraFilipe they don't have to be racecars, but with the torque electric motors are capable of producing, they're going to be naturally fast unless the motors are detuned.

You can just tell this is Jay leno’s true calling. I don’t even have a car but It’s somewhat soothing listening to him talk about and share his knowledge of cars. And he seems happy so it makes for very good content.
I'm with Jay, love the exterior but the interior is a missed opportunity. Imagine having kept the smell and feel and look of the original F100. The oversized iPad on the dash ruins it. As do the seats.
I totally agree with you 100%. When Jay opened the driver's door and I saw that big flat screen, it was over for me. Jay is right. There's nothing magical about those modern smear screens as dashes, and the characterless steering wheels. Designers, bring back the old style dashes and gauges!
Old school simple controls and gauges are much more user friendly while driving. Less distracting. After a while you can do anything in your car without having to look away from the road at all. Can’t do that with a touch screen.
@@dillonmiller956 It kinda bothers me how distracting all the infotainment tech is. Yeah some of it is useful like the trip computers but we are losing the ability to have muscle memory in cars that just have touchscreens and dial or button shifters.

I’m glad he asked about the a/c aspect. I might be one of the few who’s curious about that small difference btwn self contained or accessory belt driven a;c.
EV makers far prefer self-contained as you can leave the AC on during (for example) the time you spend parked on a trip to the store on a hot Arizona day. Dog wants to go with you? No problem, he sits in the car with the car in Dog Mode, aircon on and you came back to a cool car.
When you sleep in a EV you can also set the system to a specific temperature and “condition” the air so when you wake up there is not an ounce of condensation, very cool.
THIS is the kind of thing that actually makes me optimistic about the future, and that's saying a lot because not much does anymore. I LOVE the idea of taking something that's already HERE, that has been already made, and appreciated by many, and adapting it to be practical in a modern setting. And the fact that a guy who likes to wrench on things can do something similar to this (or at least part of it)- or, can spec something out to be made by professionals; it's brilliant.
I love my ‘69 f250 because of its mechanical simplicity. I love the bare-bones, utilitarian nature of it. I love fixing it myself. I love the lack of electronics. I love being able to swap parts, bolt on upgrades and modify. This electronic truck offers none of these things. The “essence” of the old Ford truck is completely absent in my mind.
Same with my 2005 Jeep TJ w/6pd manual and the beloved 4.0 straight six. There are AMC stickers on it. I LOVE that about it. It's also a straightforward, simple, and extremely rugged Jeep with its roots in AMC. Heck, even my 2019 Toyota Tundra, which is essentially the same truck that came out in '07. You open the hood and you see a big ole USA V8 in there with loads of room around it. It's got a regular battery sitting up front just like the old days. I really value that and refuse to own ANY turbo platform, and I couldn't care less about that it (their replacement turbo V6) has more torque/hp and only slightly more mpg. Sounds like crap. I've got the TRD Pro dual exhaust and man, it sounds like the good old days. Sucks gas like the good old days too! Thankfully they gave it a 38 gallon tank, BUT, it runs on 87 octane.

20:22 - It is interesting to note that Henry Ford's wife, Clara Ford, drove a 1914 Baker Electric Model 47 Brougham into the 1930's because she didn't have to crank it and did not have to shift. 24:43 - I had a '37 Ford hot rod that had 3 keys. One for the ignition, one for the door and one for the trunk AND the driver's door did NOT have a keyhole. That was a safety "feature" so you wouldn't open the door into traffic after parking. You would lock the driver's door from the inside, slide across and get out the passenger side and then lock the door.

Interesting to say the least! Nice to see Ford is out in front with electric hot rodding. At some point there will be electric vehicles in the junk yard. It's vehicles like this that will inspire backyard mechanics to build one of their own on the cheap.
My fear is that the electric vehicles will hit the junk yard first. A good amount of these have been on the road for 40 years already! I hope they do everything they are advertised to do and last as long as the good old inline 6 they took out.
There's some great looking Lincoln's from the late 70s through early 90s that had complete boat anchors for engines. I think an EV swap could be a great fit and improvement for those, where the target was making the drivetrain as silent and seamless as possible.
The Malaise era smaller displacement engines are not worth preserving. If you have a ruined car of that era it's a great candidate for a BEV swap. Just don't do it on a running big V8 even if it is slow. Those still need to be preserved.
A giant land Titanic with 600 equivalent horsepower would absolutely wild. Definitely would need to upgrade the suspension but what ride that would be. 😂

Jay is proof that we improve with age. The truth is in the pickle joke that he remains the master of comedy past and present. Thank you Jay for what you do for all ages.
15:50 Jay talks about feeling like the tailgate is a wind brake, saying "maybe it's psychological..". My understanding is that trucks like that are actually aerodynamically better with the tailgate up, what you get is a rotating bubble of air in the bed that acts almost like a cap on the truck, the rest of the air coming off the roof goes right over it nicely. With the tail gate down there's actually more turbulence and lower pressure, making it less slippery through the wind.
The tires on that truck were produced the first week of 2020 according to the date code on the close up shot of the wheels, which means Ford has been messing around with this for a while, very cool.
It's a very cool modern take on a classic. Pretty cool Ford will offer a crate *motor* now too. Definitely opens up the possibility for many different types of modern resto-mods.

They all are. We're just seeing the beginning of the big three and everyone else getting into this. Tesla had it to themselves for a bit and did all the grunt work, opened the doors. Now, the rest will come storming in and it will be wide open. They are barely getting started and they're already this good.
A big plus is Ford offering their electric motor as a "crate engine". Something Tesla wouldn't do. If I had the extra money a Mach-E swap into my 73 Mustang coupe would be a great project.
Ahh more nostalgia, my grandfather had a red f-100 of that style. Seems so odd to see the headrests on a truck i've only ever seen with a bench seat. I like the copper trim accents. seems appropriate for a copper queen and makes a statement about it's new heritage.
I don't like the car for the most part. Like Jay said, it would be cool to have the old interior with the old gauges and all. The new interior looks like a lifeless mass produced new car. The seats look cheap. It looks good on the outside, and the idea of an electric motor on a old car is cool.

But, as Jay looked at the modern screens and displays he frowned. Jay then said, it would be cool if the gauges were retro and digital yet resembled the old round gauges. I watched the sadness in the gentleman's eyes. Come on Ford, if the outside is old school, make digital old school gauges for the inside. Jay just gave you some excellent insight.
13:23 "I'm looking forward to you driving it." In that tone was his way of nicely asking Jay if they could go now. I think he was growing impatient with all of the anecdotes.
I think it's sagging in the middle, needs a chassis brace. 4k for a motor and if you include Tesla batteries then that'll be an extra 16k, so in total 20k for the powertrain. When you consider some crate motors cost in excess of 25k (sure the HP is twice as much, but here your paying for the new tech) this is alright

Those must be the straightest lines that have ever existed on a Ford F series Truck :D I agree with Jay about the instrument cluster, in a retro mod, I'd much rather see an upgraded cluster than resembles the original, even if it's just a screen, that's fine, but it brings the nostalgia to surface, and you can live with it, and relive it each time you have an experience driving.

I love the idea of an electric truck and I love these old Fords, but I'm not too sold on the appearance of this. Those wheels and the mix of old/new interior look awful. Jay is definitely right about keeping the original style, steering wheel, gauges.... Look at how much the back end is bouncing around at 18:40, or when they go over the tracks. I understand its the future but I would like it to be objectively better than a big six, 9", np435 combo. I mean can it really last as long or take the same abuse? Can it hold any weight in the bed anymore? Why don't they show their shock/spring setup or the battery back there? Is that part of the "custom" chassis, or is it still leaf sprung?
@@666t Oh my bad, i went back and watched that part again. I like the concept, but it seems not very practical for a truck aside from having quadruple the power. This set-up employs one ELECTRIC HUB MOTOR located INSIDE EACH WHEEL of the vehicle. I want the batteries to be CENTERED along the chassis floor so that the vehicle is superbly BALANCED!! I'm also interested in CENTERING the steering wheel, accelarator, brake pedal, and driver's seat in the MIDDLE of the dashboard so that the TRACK of the vehicle will be BALANCED from LEFT to RIGHT when 1 person is driving, like a Formula 1 car. I still want there to be PASSENGER seats too though!! This type of design can be applied to ANY type of vehicle (even 3-wheelers) and will provide superb BALANCE, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE, HANDLING (accelaration, braking, steering, etc.), and phenomenal GROUND CLEARANCE (at least as good as a MILITARY GRADE Hummer) for people who want to go OFF-ROADING!! For 99% of everyone else who doesn't tow heavy loads 100+ miles on the daily, an EV is just fine. "But what if I want to tow over the weekends or go on a road trip" ah yes, the "what if" scenarios.
I like the fact that the doors still squeak. Gives that old school feeling.
@Jay ▫️Ieno garage GOOFBALL!
My sister and I as newborns got driven home for the first time in my dad's Ford 100. I learned how to drive in one! Parallel parking was NOOO JOKE lol, and the doors always squeaked. I'll always love the 100.
I kind of miss the "will it do a burnout?" aspect of these videos.
No doubt.

I think Jay nailed it when he said it (electric conversion) would be better suited in an old LTD or Lincoln 👍
I agree
I'm with Jay, love the exterior but the interior is a missed opportunity. Imagine having kept the smell and feel and look of the original F100. The oversized iPad on the dash ruins it. As do the seats.
At least give you a gauge option to mimic the original dash....
I totally agree with you 100%. When Jay opened the driver's door and I saw that big flat screen, it was over for me.
Can also pre cool or pre heat the vehicle before you leave, while it's still plugged in.

Same with my '68 Corolla. No plastic snap together parts, no nannies...pure and simple...870,000 miles so far.
Same with my wife's 50 dodge wayfarer and my 74 Duster . Simple and functional

24:43 - I had a '37 Ford hot rod that had 3 keys. One for the ignition, one for the door and one for the trunk AND the driver's door did NOT have a keyhole.

I have a lot of history with this very truck 78 white F-150! I grew up in one my grandpa had one for 30 years and the bed was rusted out and he would put duct tape over it and spray paint it white. My dad ran a body shop and offered to fix it for free and he said nope I will just keep spraying and taping it. 😂 Also when I was 12 one ran me over on my dirt bike! Crossed the center lane hit me head on and I went through the radiator my shoe was rapped up in the fan belt. Broke my leg and arm and cracked my hip but survived.
This Ford Executive is gotta be one of the coolest feckin dudes ever.
When Jay was telling him about their competitor Tesla's Semi 🚛 pulling 80,000 lbs. He just responds, "Jesus... thats cool". Instead of a typical BS PR response etc. What an awesome guy!
Ford: We’re bringing back the Lightning!
Everyone: YEYYYY!
Lightning: 4-door electric instead of 2-door muscle truck
This though, this I like. THIS, is the electric Lightning
This is almost the same as the new F-150 Lightning - the cab doesn't make much difference.
I hope all OEM's entertain this option-- Make these vehicles from the factory, that have the good old school looks we love, but with modern technology and performance.
This was a one off build to promote the crate EV stuff
They don't even do that for regular cars though
That wouldn't be legal the reason they cant make cars look the way they used to is pedestrian safety laws a good example is how the beltline on cars keeps going up
You know, Jay, I don't know a thing about cars but I sure enjoy your show.
At 22:53 was that a product placement?
I'd love to do that with my old 1979 F-150! It's my favorite model of ford trucks. My first "truck" was a 79 Bronco and I've always owned fords since. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely love this old school new tech, thanks Jay and Ford
It is all Mach E with custom chassis
@@666t Oh my bad, i went back and watched that part again. I like the concept, but it seems not very practical for a truck aside from having quadruple the power.
I just can't help but think the original is heavier unloaded AND it can carry a bed full of firewood, or pull a boat. I think these had the older carter YF 1 barrel carb and dual tanks for ~35 gallons of fuel back there? Even if it is gas, not so bad for range! I hope this concept vehicle keeps some truck capabilities instead of being a boring multi purpose vehicle marketed for everybody.
Seeing this in person it reminded me of the truck my dad had. Super cool that Ford did this.
This is REALLY COOL!! This is fantastic news for people who want to restore OLD CLASSIC automobiles using 100% ELECTRIC power!! I'm really glad to hear that Ford is offering ELECTRIC automobile PARTS for sale to allow people to be able to make this idea a REALITY!! I only wish that Tesla, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, etc. would do the same. I am MOST interested in restoring an automobile from the 1920's through the 1970's (for the BODY STYLE) using the ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD CHASSIS. Electric automobiles truly have EVERY advantage over internal combustion vehicles that you can imagine!! Like Jay Leno said, they already have MORE horsepower and torque. There is NO engine oil to have to change all the time and you NEVER have to be worried about it LEAKING on your driveway!!
