I’ve tied in Jon directly with All-Star Superman when explaining him to people, and even myself. This run is so good at highlighting the core of Lois and Clark despite the major change in status quo. This is my all time favorite Superman arch. It was beautiful to see Clark be a father and have to teach his son all the lessons his parents taught him. This story brought me to tears more times than not.
I loved tomasi and Gleason Superman series it was fantastic and tons of fun and it breaks my heart that we lost this amazing family with clark and Lois and my boy Jonathan Samuel kent superboy being a great family and to see that now gone and destroyers by bendis bullshit really breaks my heart into a million pieces, and I am hoping really hoping there’s some way to bring back my boy Jonathan Samuel kent superboy back to his little 10 year old self and hanging out with his family and his friends Damian Wayne robin and his girlfriend Kathy.
Well hopefully asap since I don't think many fans, old & new will stay long after death metal which'll be the final seal to Didio's tenture at DC from the higher ups who will eventually realise this and either get Johns back or choose a more competant leader who agrees with his vision for DC's future in the 21st century.
Euodias Lee agreed and don’t get me wrong death metal does look tons of fun, but after death metal like you said a lot of people myself included will probably leave because frankly DiDio has ruined everything with my boys Jonathan Samuel kent superboy getting aged up for bullshit and Wally west my flash becoming the new dr Manhattan which is also a horrible idea. I think people will probably leave and I am hoping really hoping when people leave didio gets fired because he has ruined everything with the DC Universe.
Edge Lord McCringe MK-3000 fair enough and honestly your not entirely wrong especially with manga having a beginning middle and end to there stories well most of the time anyways.
Rebirth... Those were fun times. DC's future was looking up, I made friends along the way. I bonded with people and the comics helped me. It's sad that Rebirth is gone now with this new era of DC, but I will forever love and bright and sunny days of Rebirth.
DC just keeps accidentally doing things they think won't work really well and then hating themselves for it: _"You can't make a teen sidekick his own character. People will only ever remember and like them as their young sidekick identity. You can't age him up!"_ (Dick Grayson Nightwing, gets shot in the head) _"You can't have a major superhero be replaced by a different character. No one will ever like them as much as or more than the character they replaced!"_ (Wally West, Heroes in Crisis'd) _"You can't have a superhero be happily married and with a child! That makes them unrelatable, older, and stale!"_ (Superman, Bendis'd) _"You can't have invent a young superhero that everyone loves! They'll only ever have a cult following!"_ (Jon Kent, Also Bendis'd)
I've been reading through the New 52 era of Superman and while it has that appeal in terms of action (Seriously who knew Tony S. Daniel could draw such a fantastic superman) It never really captured what made the character great. Tomasi and Gleason's run is easily my favorite superman run in recent years featuring some of the best art by the legend himself Jorge Jiminez! Thanks for making the vid! Have you considered a video on Snyder and Capullo's Batman? I've just read Last Knight On Earth and it was exceptional!
@@MattDraper Thanks! I've always thought of their run as an exploration of Batman's connections to others, specifically the people who live in gotham, my favorite arc is Superheavy of all things! Also I subbed to your patreon :). Love the content.
Absolutely amazing Superman series. The series that really made me fall in love with Superman. So inspiring and full of hope. Everything Superman should be. I bought every single issue, and have no regrets. DC would be smart to bring this family dynamic back.
What can I say, but that’s it’s my favorite run on Superman EVER! I could gush about it, but I don’t think I’ll be able to find all the words to perfectly describe what I love so much about this series. I guess family is what drew me in-seeing Clark as a father, Lois as the leader, and Jon as the child learning to step into the shoes of a hero, all of it just being so lovely and exciting to read and watch. But man, that ending with John William’s Superman theme was perfect to close off your video; it just filled me with so much love and joy, and it really hit home how powerful and impactful this era of the character was for so many people and fans. Loved it!
Now I'm sad, because it reminds me that Bendis destroyed everything this wonderful run made once he took over :'(. Curse you Bendis and curse you Dan Didio for hiring him
Didio hates legacy characters! Everyone knows that! He thinks that they "Weigh down the heroes, and cheapen them." No they DON'T! Worse, Didio also thinks "Superheros can't get married." Since it's "Not good drama." Uuuuggggghhhhh.....Fuck this guy.
Tomasi/Gleason's Superman run pairs nicely with their Batman & Robin run. They need to do one more series to complete this unofficial Father-Son trilogy
I was just getting into comics, Superman meant nothing to me at that time and idk but I saw that cover of the last issue of their run and I bought it. Man! It melted my heart and made me drop some tears! That single issue means a lot to me as Superman does now and am deeply thankful for that ❤️
I remember finishing the Mr Mxyptlc arc and feeling such a warm on the heart. Feeling so hopeful, so inspired. I really love this Superman incarnation.
The Superman Rebirth was one of the greatest eras for the character himself hell we even got the coolest creation out of it Jonathan Kent his son and that just made it even better. It’s just too bad that Bendis took this a completely different rout that nobody asked for not even me it’s sad really
Wow I'm surprised Superman has been married to Lois this long seems like most writers and editors are allergic to letting superheroes be married or have children that aren't from messed up stories like what Talia Al Ghul did with Batman
Whoa. Matt, I can’t imagine the amount of time you spent reading, researching, writing the script, recording the script, gathering all the images, strategically placing them with the script, finding the right music, and editing all of this together! It’s hard to be that your EXTREMELY high quality content is here for all of us for free. Thank you so much for your time and passion to inform and entertain us.
I would love to see you cover the One Year Later era of Superman. When Kurt Busiek was writing Superman and Geoff Johns was writing Action Comics. Those runs are beginner friendly and they managed to successfully modernise the Silver Age lore like the Legion of Super-Heroes, Brainiac, General Zod and Bizarro World. And Superman: Up, Up and Away is probably the best Clark Kent story.
I have hope, even if a little, that the stories Bendis is doing with the Superman family will be retconned out of existence and that Clark, Lois and a not teenage John will have loving and fun adventures again.
Armando Torres At the very least, for the next history altering Crisis, just say that Jon grew up under the guidance of his loving parents, then the Legion contacted him when he was old enough. There’s nothing inherently wrong with him going to the future and joining the Legion (it’s like going to college), it’s Jon being tortured on Earth 3 by evil versions of his parents that’s fucked.
Gonna miss this team on Supes. A nice, lighthearted, heartwarming, and wholesome run on the character. The dynamic was done really well. One of my favourite moments was definitely when Batman and Robin came over for dinner. I would like to see you cover Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. I'd be interested in the breakdown of the dichotomy between Superman and Lex Luthor. Imo, that dynamic doesn't get as much respect and appreciation as it deserves.
This series happened at the right time for me. My daughter had just been born and I was starting to come to terms with what being a parent meant. This book helped me so much even if it was just in the small way of seeing Superman struggling with the same problems and questions I was.
Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason's Superman had an amazing run on Superman. Bendis ruined the Superfamily he's their kryptonite. Awesome video, you did well getting Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason to notice you on Twitter and that's a major bonus too :)
Thank you for this excellent video on Tomasi and Gleason's Superman run! You expressed so many great themes, character arcs and the family dynamic that made this series one of my favourite Superman runs ever. It's hard to put into words what Superman Rebirth meant to me but you did a heck of a great job in this video. As a Superman fan, I intend to keep the colours flying for this run.
Yeah i stuck around for about 6 issues. To be fair i liked that he have super boy a suit and i thought putting the fortress of solitude in the Bermuda triangle was pretty interesting. And ivan reis's artwork was phenomenal. Everything else about that run just wasn't my jam.
Thank you very much for making this video! This is the reason Superman became my favorite superhero. I started reading comics in 2016, and around that time DC rebirth was going on and this was the only series that I loved from start to finish. Every issue is just so action-packed, wholesome, and amazing! I actually also planned to make a video about this run after I get all of the DC Rebirth Deluxe Editions of the series.
How has Bendis possibly done that? Has anything Bendis has done with Supes compared doing a first sequel to Multiversity JUST to kill of a gay character made to subvert killing of gay characters or making Bizarro (the funny dude from planet opposite day) abuse his son?
Markus Criticus I’m pretty sure Tomasi didn’t write Multiplicity JUST to kill a gay character. There was a lot more going on in the book. Bizarro is the opposite of Superman; that’s the whole point of his character. Abusing Boyzarro made sense, and made him more tragic (which made it all the better when he escaped Bizarroworld and became a Hamilton citizen). Bendis had Jon be mentally tortured by evil Earth 3 versions of his parents for most of his teenage years, made Lois Lane abandon her son to her evil father in law because space is scary (even though she fought alongside the Female Furies in Tomasi and Gleason’s run; she was a complete and utter badass), made Clark a bad parent for allowing all that to happen in the first place, and he even screwed over the timeless tale of Krypton’s destruction by making it the fault of some bland Doomsday rip-off.
Dustin Dziembala Personally I liked Superman, Aquaman, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corp. , Deathstroke (that one really surprised me about how good it was)
@@JTR_3 all I've read from Rebirth was Deathstroke, Flash and Green Lanterns. Only liked the first of those. The books I was deciding on where Green Arrow, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Superman.
As someone who's not super into Superman, it's nice to see something that seems very character-driven for him and his family. So often we hear how he has no personality, but this seems to really show that he does have one. Great video
Before Superman Rebirth, I respected Superman (due to All-Star Superman), but Batman resonated with me more. I’m happy to say, Tomasi and Gleason’s convinced me otherwise!
I remember reading tomasi and gleason run as it came out. I couldnt wait to get home to read the latest issue every wednesday. Even at work, I spent hours just thinking on the new issue and some of the channels and internet forums discussing what has happened with every new issue. its the first time since I felt that excited over a superman title in a while. its probably my favorite superman run in the last 15 years. very wholesome, full of heart, and exactly what needs to be used to be adapted to the big screen. Family, heart, hope, things that sound cliche but describes what superman means for people. also the jurgens action comics run was very good too, just a different feel to it. That rebirth era of superman was probably the best time to be a superman fan.
Absolutely fantastic breakdown on this run. It was the run that got me back into Superman. You're production quality is also outstanding. I for sure am about to scroll and watch another.
I finally caved in and donated $1 to your Patreon to watch this video early (a day early)... Fantastic video! I loved this run so much. Even if it had a bumpy second half (the fill-in issues with Parallax and Deathstroke were completely unappealing), it still had plenty of high points that would’ve kept me reading for years (I love the Bizzaroverse story. Boyzarro is so precious ❤️). This run, along with All*Star Superman and Doomsday Clock, made Superman my favorite hero. And unfortunately, because Bendis controls both the main Superman book and Action Comics, I have no outlet to continue reading Superman. What I found appealing about modern Superman no longer exists, and that’s disappointing. Of course I wanted to see Jon grow up and become the next Superman (with Damian as either the next Batman or Nightwing, creating the World’s Finest Sons)... but not like THAT! Anyway, when this video goes public, I’ll share it on all of the main DC/Superman subreddits (unless you plan on doing that. idk if they have a no self-promotion rule) and hope it gets a million views. I want everyone to read this run... and I want WB to watch this video/read this run, so they can solve their “how do we make Superman relevant to modern audiences?” conundrum.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. Agreed on this family dynamic making Superman much more appealing and Bendis not being my preferred approach to the character now. Feel free to share wherever you’d like, that would be amazing! And once again, thank you for signing up for Patreon, you’ll be able to see the next video much earlier than 1 day.
You said SO much here that I’ve been thinking since delving into this run. The cover of the family looking to the hopeful distance, the flag in the background... its the type of old school goodness folks don’t see anymore or are too embarrassed to show. Thank you for this. It was AWESOME!! Also, the way you edited the ending there.... I got CHILLS. ~ Sincerest regards, a lifelong Superman Fan
MATT! I never thought you would cover this run! And you did! I absolutely loved this run, flaws and all. The writing, the ART, the feelings it imparted on me. I will say during my adolescence my love of Superman had waned (especially after reading The Dark Knight Returns) due to the fact I wanted to believe in a more brutal and callous version of "justice" (see Batman, Punisher) because I was of the mindset "the ends justify the means". But being a bit older since then, I've come to value the morals and ideology that Tomasi and even Dan Jurgens evoked in their storytelling. It's what I loved about reading All Star Superman, what I loved about watching Superman TAS and Richard Donner's Superman 1&2 (we don't talk about 3 or 4) and especially when watching Man of Steel. That we, as humans but also as being part of a family can inspire and aspire to be greater. My hopes are that with the upcoming Superman & Lois CW show and hopefully Henry Cavill's next outing, that filmmakers can take a page or two out of Tomasi & Gleasons playbook when it comes to getting Big Blue and his family right on the screen. Fantastic video, Matt! Honestly one of my favorites! Keep it up 😁🤘🤘
Thank you! I similarly cooled off on Superman as a teenager, but just love him more and more every year. He’s a truly special character when done right.
Man this storyline was the best, it was sad when it ended, I really did I think my dad was superman when he could carry all of my cousins, and when he put other peoples problems above himself, and I looked up to him I still do, he's always my superman
Outside of a few issues of Supersons, I haven't read much of the Super Family. Having said that, I'd love to see a well written live action version of the Clark, Lois, Jonathan relationship.
Bro, that same era you had Superman as a father and Batman as a husband and Wonderwoman as a queen, they were growing, they were becoming better but DC doesn’t know how to make up with their minds.
I LOVE your reviews so much! I don’t make hardly any time to read like I used to, and really appreciate your breakdown of visual and narrative themes... Makes me wanna make time to dig back in!
Oh my god this video got me emotional. Reminds me just how much I need to read this run. You did a outstanding job on this video, laying out just how important this run and Superman is. Bravo sir
Another great, emotional video Matt! Would love to see a video about Y: The Last Man, specially with the tv show coming up. And also a Grant Morrison's Batman run. Cause Dick Grayson as Batman with Damian as Robin is my favorite Batman ever.
Thank you! Working my way through Y right now so hopefully a video soon. And I’ve got plans for Morrison Batman, too! Thinking about a 3 part video for that.
Tomasi's run on Superman was perfection in my eyes. I don't think many people see Superman as their favourite superhero because he's so God damn powerful. But all they did was bring back the old Superman we know and love and give him a family. It's just so simple but it works. It's sad that this run was meant to continue to but buried in favour of that dweeb Bendis. Will never forgive that bald headed bastard for ruining Superman and killing my favorite superhero duo the Super sons.
Rebirth Superman by Tomasi would be the readers of this Modern Age, our New Golden Age of Comics, by the time Bendis comes in, he turns it all to the primordial dirt age & destroyed everything that came before.
I swear this run felt like the beating heart of Rebirth, and the DC Universe to me
And than Brian Michael Bendis came along and ruined it. Ah well, least I still have Tomasi and Gleason's run on the comics to look back on.

This is my all time favorite Superman arch. It was beautiful to see Clark be a father and have to teach his son all the lessons his parents taught him. This story brought me to tears more times than not.
Liberum Gaming same, it filled my heart often
DC just keeps accidentally doing things they think won't work really well and then hating themselves for it:
_"You can't make a teen sidekick his own character. People will only ever remember and like them as their young sidekick identity. You can't age him up!"_ (Dick Grayson Nightwing, gets shot in the head)
_"You can't have a major superhero be replaced by a different character. No one will ever like them as much as or more than the character they replaced!"_ (Wally West, Heroes in Crisis'd)
_"You can't have a superhero be happily married and with a child! That makes them unrelatable, older, and stale!"_ (Superman, Bendis'd)
_"You can't have invent a young superhero that everyone loves! They'll only ever have a cult following!"_ (Jon Kent, Also Bendis'd)
Just Some Guy with a Mustache Dan DiDio is an Earth 3 editor. He thinks good things are bad, and bad things are good.
The series that actually got me into comics I still got every issue of this run and it will forever be one of my favorite Superman runs
I'm always going to look back at this run and think of it as...
"The year that DC got it right."
Instead it was that was all of rebirth was about
I've been reading through the New 52 era of Superman and while it has that appeal in terms of action (Seriously who knew Tony S.
Thanks! I’ve been thinking about doing something on their Batman, but not quite sure yet. It will definitely happen at some point.
@@MattDraper Thanks! I've always thought of their run as an exploration of Batman's connections to others, specifically the people who live in gotham, my favorite arc is Superheavy of all things!
Also I subbed to your patreon :). Love the content.
Tomasi and Gleason have to come back and fix what Bendis has done, their Superman was absolutely perfect
Curse you Bendis and curse you Dan Didio for hiring him
Ikr
Worse this run was supposed to continue, but got pushed over for Bendis.
That single issue means a lot to me as Superman does now and am deeply thankful for that ❤️
I cannot begin to say how much I LOVED this run. The County Fair 1 shot may be my favorite contained Supes story.
I finished the run, and I had never been so impressed by a Superman comic
I remember finishing the Mr Mxyptlc arc and feeling such a warm on the heart. Feeling so hopeful, so inspired. I really love this Superman incarnation.
Watching these videos makes me realize how important superhero’s are in so many peoples lives. Especially Superman, the one who started it all.
The Superman Rebirth was one of the greatest eras for the character himself hell we even got the coolest creation out of it Jonathan Kent his son and that just made it even better. It’s just too bad that Bendis took this a completely different rout that nobody asked for not even me it’s sad really
Bendis:
Me: HE CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS
Wow I'm surprised Superman has been married to Lois this long seems like most writers and editors are allergic to letting superheroes be married or have children that aren't from messed up stories like what Talia Al Ghul did with Batman
Captain Jakemerica yeah and especially the wedding of Bruce and Selena
Or the whole One More Day.
@@mayotango1317 True good example
Mayo Tango131 don’t some superheroes deserve happiness?
@@srstriker6420 Not according to Joe Quesada and Dan Didio.
Yes! Love this run! First Superman run I've ever read all the way through, glad you decided to talk about it!
DUDE THIS IS MY FAVORITE SUPERMAN VIDEO LIKE I BERN WITH YOU SINCE THE BEGINNING LOVE YOUR WORK
I would love to see you cover the One Year Later era of Superman.
Big fan of that era. It’s got great stories and generally an approach to Superman that lines up with what I love. I’d love to talk about it sometime.
This is one of the great Superman runs for me. Stands right there with All Star Superman every time I have to recommend Superman comics to someone.
This was a great run and you really did it justice. You nailed it. Great episode
Thank you!
This was the run that made me love Superman comics....then that love quickly faded when Bendis came in and ruined things....as he tends to do
This run of Superman is one of my favorites, along side "All-Star Superman" and "Superman: For All Seasons"
Video made me tear up a bit. This run was so good can’t believe DC allowed Bendis to come along
_Having a Family is what truly makes one Super._
“Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man.”
Honestly my favorite Superman series. I've been thinking of rereading this run. Great video!
God I miss the writing, that costume and that artwork. This run is honest to god the best Superman run of the 21st century
Thank you! The colors will fly.
Rip Superman being a good book for like a year, dropped bendis’ run so quickly.
To be fair, it was almost two whole years.
Yeah i stuck around for about 6 issues. To be fair i liked that he have super boy a suit and i thought putting the fortress of solitude in the Bermuda triangle was pretty interesting. And ivan reis's artwork was phenomenal. Everything else about that run just wasn't my jam.
Bornwinner 55
The aging up superboy part is where it dropped from meh to just awful. Can’t stand how bendis backtracks every comic he writes
Never forget that Dan didio will stop at nothing to destroy the integrity of DC comics
He is the greatest DC villain and he needs to be stopped.
@@markuscriticus8278 By getting rid of just about everything people loved about Rebirth Superman.
He's gone now, and his 5G plans seem to have been shelved. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!!!!
I am still heartbroken about how everything this series stood for is gone.
Well I haven't been sure which of four Rebirth era comics to read and... Thanks for solving that problem for me! 😎👍
@@DzustComics They are all pretty good too. I loved the art on Green Arrow.
6:14 that “no” nearly made me spit my drink lolol
Man timeline stuff be confusing
As someone who's not super into Superman, it's nice to see something that seems very character-driven for him and his family. So often we hear how he has no personality, but this seems to really show that he does have one. Great video
Thank you!
Boyzarro, what a great name. I also got a friend who loves this arc. I can see here that he was right.
Every time i see the notification and see Mat Draper, it makes my day better!
Man I wish I discovered this channel sooner, keep up the great work
This is my favorite channel on RUclips. Thank you for putting so much time, effort and thought into your videos. It shows, and it’s appreciated.
Thank you!
Absolutely fantastic breakdown on this run. It was the run that got me back into Superman. You're production quality is also outstanding. I for sure am about to scroll and watch another.
I really loved Gleason and Tomasi's run on Superman tbh
You have a perfect voice for comic book analysis man
Bendis making Jon grow up was a terrible idea. I really like the beginning version of Rebirth Superman.
EXCELLENT run it's classic Superman with the family dynamic I love it wish it was LONGER
Hunter Chamberlain have you heard Batman the cult and Penguin pain and prejudice comic?

Man this storyline was the best, it was sad when it ended, I really did I think my dad was superman when he could carry all of my cousins, and when he put other peoples problems above himself, and I looked up to him I still do, he's always my superman
I loved that run of Superman
I love super sons it was a fantastic and tons of fun
Man! I want this back so bad.
Dude I'm actually 😥 this is BEAUTIFUL
I'm back watching this video for the third time. I love it. Every time i reread a story from Tomasi's run i feel like watching this.
The series that got me into comics. It's been a wild three years.
Outside of a few issues of Supersons, I haven't read much of the Super Family. Having said that, I'd love to see a well written live action version of the Clark, Lois, Jonathan relationship.
Great video! Made me cry. One of my favorite runs I'm comics and favorite things ever, Gleason & Tomasi 4 Life.
thanks for summing it up, I missed this one
Bro, that same era you had Superman as a father and Batman as a husband and Wonderwoman as a queen, they were growing, they were becoming better but DC doesn’t know how to make up with their minds.
This has easily become my favorite video of you man, thanks for this, Supes himself would be honored :)
I love your style in how you talk about comics.
Now this is one Super video.
I would love to see something like this in the DCEU where it's like superman is a dad. It would be like a sitcom.
In a trying time without any friends or family in sight, this made me feel warm. Thanks.
Very glad that this video could do that.
@@MattDraper Nice!
Y: The Last Man is easily one of the most exceptional comics I've ever read!
Totally teared up ♥️
Rebirth Superman by Tomasi would be the readers of this Modern Age, our New Golden Age of Comics,
by the time Bendis comes in, he turns it all to the primordial dirt age & destroyed everything that came before.
Superman is the best father in all of comics
Brb gonna go buy this run
Eduardo Ruiz If you live in the US, you can also read it (and Super Sons) on the DC Universe app. Try before you buy, you know?
