    It’s really sad that DC resorted to giving in to star power by having Bendis write Superman as this is the comic that really got me to love Superman. Just a simple story about a loving family and really defined what DC Rebirth was. I’ve read the entire series since the beginning and it was tons of fun. Issue 7 still remains my favorite of the run with it just being Clark, Lois and Jon going to the carnival. Tomasi and Gleason were great choices as recently I read their Batman and Robin series as well as Super Sons. Man, I really want this team to come back. I mean I dropped the Bendis run so you can tell where I stand with that. Teenage Jon was...really stupid. Another great Superman video Matt. Can’t wait for the Vision video. :)

This was the first run of the big blue I read since back when he adopted Chris as his son( and you know how long ago that was). What Bendis has done to the characters totally takes a piss on everything that Tomasi did them relatable. Now, it’s like we’re back in the new 52 days all over again, but yet, somehow it’s worse.
      Maybe the 5G’s new direction will be the best thing to for everyone, cause DC doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing these days. Anyway, make hulk smash in your next video,Matt!

    This is not only one of the best Superman runs of all but, personally, one of my favorite comic books of all time. Tomasi really nailed Superman, bringing back classic elements from his past but also given him new ones, such as Jon, creating something that works for both old fans as well as new ones. Not to mention that the dynamic between Clark, Lois and Jon was amazing (my favorite issue of the entire run is when they go to the carnival) and made Superman much more human and relatable than he ever was.
    Considering how nowadays DC/Warner are struggling to make a Superman movie, I think Tomasi's run should be one of the main sources of inspiration, having Superman living epic adventures but at the same time having a emotional and heartfelt story about family.

    The Rebirth era was like a Renaissance for Superman. That was when I collected Super titles the most with Superman and AC alternating an issue each week. Both wrote Clark well, had plenty of action and fun but Superman especially took him in a new direction with natural progression.
    Superman as a family man, a father, it was fresh but still kept him as who he was. Jon was a great addition and it was also great to have the Super Sons.
    I have very mixed feelings for Bendis’ run. Even if it does get better I doubt it’ll ever be as good as this.

    • @ForceWave-1139
      @ForceWave-1139 4 года назад

      RCBM Mines My problem with Action Comics Rebirth is that it was a lot more steeped in continuity (and not in a cool meta way like Doomsday Clock; it felt more like bait to get you to buy other books). You had to read other books (Superwoman, Suicide Squad, Lois & Clark, Final Days of Superman etc) in order to get the full story.
      Whereas Superman Rebirth is just fun slice-of-Super-life adventures, that anyone can pick up. It references the weird two Supermans stuff initially (idk why they didn’t do Superman Reborn *before* Rebirth), but once you get over that, it’s incredibly enjoyable.

    • @rcbmmines4579
      @rcbmmines4579 4 года назад +1

      ForceWave 1139 that’s true. Tomasi’s Superman definitely feels a lot more standalone. Still, plenty of great action in Jurgens’ Action Comics. Makes for a great supplement for those invested in larger continuity. Both combined lead to a great era of Superman that I hope we’ll see again.

    This is without a doubt the greatest Superman comic run period. I'm sad they ended it. For me this comic run was what Superman stood for distilled in his purest form. This is what Superman can be and what can do. A style for hope to inspire the next generation. A loving and caring hope that comics sadly shy away from to keep things "dark and mature".

    Gonna miss this team on Supes. A nice, lighthearted, heartwarming, and wholesome run on the character. The dynamic was done really well. One of my favourite moments was definitely when Batman and Robin came over for dinner. I would like to see you cover Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. I'd be interested in the breakdown of the dichotomy between Superman and Lex Luthor. Imo, that dynamic doesn't get as much respect and appreciation as it deserves.

      How has Bendis possibly done that? Has anything Bendis has done with Supes compared doing a first sequel to Multiversity JUST to kill of a gay character made to subvert killing of gay characters or making Bizarro (the funny dude from planet opposite day) abuse his son?

    • @ForceWave-1139
      @ForceWave-1139 4 года назад +23

      Markus Criticus I’m pretty sure Tomasi didn’t write Multiplicity JUST to kill a gay character. There was a lot more going on in the book.
      Bizarro is the opposite of Superman; that’s the whole point of his character. Abusing Boyzarro made sense, and made him more tragic (which made it all the better when he escaped Bizarroworld and became a Hamilton citizen).
      Bendis had Jon be mentally tortured by evil Earth 3 versions of his parents for most of his teenage years, made Lois Lane abandon her son to her evil father in law because space is scary (even though she fought alongside the Female Furies in Tomasi and Gleason’s run; she was a complete and utter badass), made Clark a bad parent for allowing all that to happen in the first place, and he even screwed over the timeless tale of Krypton’s destruction by making it the fault of some bland Doomsday rip-off.

Even at work, I spent hours just thinking on the new issue and some of the channels and internet forums discussing what has happened with every new issue. its the first time since I felt that excited over a superman title in a while. its probably my favorite superman run in the last 15 years. very wholesome, full of heart, and exactly what needs to be used to be adapted to the big screen. Family, heart, hope, things that sound cliche but describes what superman means for people. also the jurgens action comics run was very good too, just a different feel to it. That rebirth era of superman was probably the best time to be a superman fan.

    I finally caved in and donated $1 to your Patreon to watch this video early (a day early)...
    Fantastic video! I loved this run so much. Even if it had a bumpy second half (the fill-in issues with Parallax and Deathstroke were completely unappealing), it still had plenty of high points that would’ve kept me reading for years (I love the Bizzaroverse story. Boyzarro is so precious ❤️). This run, along with All*Star Superman and Doomsday Clock, made Superman my favorite hero.
    And unfortunately, because Bendis controls both the main Superman book and Action Comics, I have no outlet to continue reading Superman. What I found appealing about modern Superman no longer exists, and that’s disappointing. Of course I wanted to see Jon grow up and become the next Superman (with Damian as either the next Batman or Nightwing, creating the World’s Finest Sons)... but not like THAT!
    Anyway, when this video goes public, I’ll share it on all of the main DC/Superman subreddits (unless you plan on doing that. idk if they have a no self-promotion rule) and hope it gets a million views. I want everyone to read this run... and I want WB to watch this video/read this run, so they can solve their “how do we make Superman relevant to modern audiences?” conundrum.

    • @MattDraper
      @MattDraper  4 года назад +7

      Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. Agreed on this family dynamic making Superman much more appealing and Bendis not being my preferred approach to the character now. MATT! I never thought you would cover this run! And you did! I absolutely loved this run, flaws and all. The writing, the ART, the feelings it imparted on me. I will say during my adolescence my love of Superman had waned (especially after reading The Dark Knight Returns) due to the fact I wanted to believe in a more brutal and callous version of "justice" (see Batman, Punisher) because I was of the mindset "the ends justify the means". But being a bit older since then, I've come to value the morals and ideology that Tomasi and even Dan Jurgens evoked in their storytelling. It's what I loved about reading All Star Superman, what I loved about watching Superman TAS and Richard Donner's Superman 1&2 (we don't talk about 3 or 4) and especially when watching Man of Steel. That we, as humans but also as being part of a family can inspire and aspire to be greater. My hopes are that with the upcoming Superman & Lois CW show and hopefully Henry Cavill's next outing, that filmmakers can take a page or two out of Tomasi & Gleasons playbook when it comes to getting Big Blue and his family right on the screen. Fantastic video, Matt! Honestly one of my favorites! Keep it up 😁🤘🤘
