Thank you, great video. I was always led to believe that the modulator only adjust the rpm shift points, but it is very limited. I did not know that it can also make it shift harder or softer. I learned something today which may very well solve my hard shift into second gear problem. We'll see tomorrow when I get back under there to make the adjustment.
This is awesome, the new th400 I just put in my k5 shifts so hard I thought it had a shift kit installed by the previous owner can’t wait to try it thanks
I always liked the th400 because of one i owned many years ago and now i have another but the vehicle is quite a restoration job and getting close to testing it out and to see how it shifts and this video will help a lot im sure.

Hey Drasters. I don't have a problem with hard or shift shifting. My TH400 Is not shifting at all. This transmission was working great before I put it in my truck. You sir, seem to be a master transmission mechanic! May I ask you a question? On my Th400, it will shift from 1st to 3rd before I'm going 15 mph. Way to soon. Will adjusting the vacuum modulator help, or will I have to adjust weights in the governor? If weights will need to be adjusted, do I increase or decrease to make it shift later? Thanks in advance, keep the videos coming, Thanks Jim

If the complete governor assembly was changed then there is a pretty good chance it has different weights and springs installed.

Turbo 400 transmission???
it is sounds like you have valves sticking in the valvebody
I got a 400 that really bangs into reverse. I did find some hoopa-juped universals and swapped them out but it's still on the concerning side. I lowered my idle a might too.
Did you get it figured out?
Did you figure it out?
No I still have not figured it out but I just ordered a reverse cushion kit from Transgo so we'll see how that goes. I've no idea where to start other than dropping the pan.
Good vid !

I have a TH400 in an old C3 Vette. Low miles stock L82 with the only upgrade being close chamber aluminum heads. Runs fine at part throttle and shifts ok but at full throttle it will not shift into second before the valves start to float. If I ease off the petal it will then shift into second. I have a new modulator on the way, I hope this resolved the issue. Any thoughts are appreciated.
@-zio
How long have you had the car and what has been done to the transmission?
Very informative. My "pro shop" rebuilt TH400 on my 78 Chevy in D shifts 1-2 at 40MPH and 2-3 @70MPH, yet in L2 she shifts from 1-2 @15MPH. This means the springs of the governor are wrong, all I need to do is replace them?
78 Chevy what? What vehicle are we talking about? Need info on what you driving. Vehicle type,engine, tire size, gear ratio
1978 K20 Suburban 4WD with a 350 Eng, Th400/NP205. No idea on the gear ratio. LT285/75R16. I don't get why there is a difference between how the truck shifts from 1-2 in L2 Vs D in normal driving, nor too pleased with the shift points in D under normal acceleration.
Hey I've recently had issues with my TH400. It started getting harder and harder to get in and out of Park. I don't think it has to do with the Reverse selection because Neutral to Reverse is okay. I've got a side detent floor shifter because the truck used to be Manual. Only thing I could think being the cause of the issue is when I changed the filter and maybe I bumped something?
I got a 89 Chevy Silverado k3500, with 454 and th400 all original stock. Just replaced the vacuum modulator 1st to 2nd still has a delayed shift. And this truck bangs in reverse so hard I'm afraid I'll break a u joint or my rear end.
Start with removing the governor and inspect gear. Make sure that governor housing itself is ok. You may be pulling tranny out but start here first. I have other videos in my play lists explaining the governor
How do you make it so that it shift smooth at low throttle inputs and aggressive at higher throttle inputs? I have a th350.
I have a th400. A guy went back thru it. Changed governer and modulator. He didn’t see anything else wrong. It shifted one time afterwards and I can’t get it to shift anymore. I changed all vacuum lines Nd fuel hoses , fuel pump and sending unit. Any help please!!??
@jalenhawkins8931
Start by removing the governor taking it apart thoroughly cleaning it. I have videos in my playlists titled "turbo 350" showing how it's done. 350 and 400 share the same governor
I have a th350 turbo , will shift to reverse and drive great, but when I wanna drive down the road it will not go into 2nd or 3rd gear at all, I’ve checked the governor it was not locked up, the kickdown cable worked like it should. will this fix that issue?
@ronaldogonzales115
Sounds like a stuck valve in valve body
Can you tell me about the vacuum line going to the modulator valve? Does the hard metal line have a check valve in it ? Should I run a line from the modulator valve to the manifold or proted vacuum on carb? Thank You.
Why is there a light shining under your car........yep I have had that happen a couple of times lol!
Great clear video. Thank you. Question: my Corvette 1978 shifts too hard from 1st to 2nd. Kind of "thumps" into second with noticeable shake. From 2nd to third is really smooth. Would this adjustment (counterclockwise) help? Thanks
You can try adjusting the Modulator. First make sure the rubber hoses are good in fact just replace them. Check the metal vacuum line as well. Take it off plug off one end and try and blow through the other end. You could have a bad Modulator. Or the hose may have popped off also. Make sure the vacuum line is connected to a full time vacuum port. One of these things I've talked about could be the issue. I'm thinking it's an internal issue but I don't know what's been done to the tranny.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the video. Keep me posted on what you find.
@@dragsterstransmissions Thank a lot! Great advise...
Does a new modulator come set to a certain point or should you adjust in or out before even starting? Like when you adjust a carb you turn the screws all the way in and then adjust them out to the correct positions.
@Knuckle Busters DIY turn valve to the right 2 turns to start that will firm up shifts a bit
I just installed a used 400 trans into my 83 c30.. (planning to get the original rebuilt). I'm having two issues. One is that it seems the dipstick is being blown out of the tube at least twice a week when I'm checking under the hood.
2ndly it's as if i have a governor on the motor now or something. The acceleration just isn't there anymore. Do you think adjusting the modulator or governor in the trans will help with that..?
First are you sure you have the correct dipstick installed? If so check the vent on top of trans?
As for acceleration put shifter down in low gear to make sure it is taking off in low.
Can I put a regular 5/32 vacuum hose on the modulator? Will it collapse? Or does it need the special metal hose with heavier rubber hose on the ends?
Metal is best 👌

Disconnect lower cooler line at radiator/cooler and drain into a catch pan. Have someone start engine. If fluid is pumping out slow it needs a rebuild and a fresh converter

@Irving Bar How long has the 700 been in the car?
@@dragsterstransmissions just recently installed
@@irvingbar4569 so the 700R4 was recently built then. Back to your original post. A 700R4 does not have a vacuum modulator. As for the cable that is a "TV" (throttle valve) cable and controls pressure throughout the tranny. If the cable is not adjusted correctly the tranny will be burnt up by the time you reach the end of the driveway. Yes itt can happen that fast.. If the tranny is banging into 2nd then the cable was off and or the 2nd gear clutch is busted.
Thanks for this video. I’ve been noticing in my 1970 sbc350/th350 that shifting from 1 to 2n and 2nd into D there’s a slow transition. Delayed if you will. When I slap it from 1-2-D it shifts fine. Reverse is fine. The car did sit for very long periods of time. I was planning on changing the fluids/filter and now changing the modulator out. Any other suggestions?
A rebuild may be in the near future since it sat for a long time and you don't know how long it has been since the transmission was rebuilt before sitting. The Seals on the forward and direct pistons get hard and brittle when it is not getting used.
Yes drain the pan and look in the bottom for metal and grayish black sludge.

Question, I have an ‘84 1 ton Scottsdale with a 8.1 vortec and a TH 400 and it shifts through all three gears before I hit 15 mph. Where can I get the springs to run each gear longer.
Order a transgo kit for the 400 trans. Get the pro kit. It will say pro at end of part #. It comes with a bunch of parts to upgrade your valvebody including the governor springs. 4 sets I believe
What gears are you running
Also your engine combo might have something to do with it.
Start by testing vacuum modulator. Remove it and apply vacuum
It is a brand new monster transmission I told them all the details, but they have been less than desirable through this whole process. My old TH400 did this also, 456 gears. Do you think it’s PullIing to much vacuum

Can i adjust VM to shift 2 gear chrip it did before i replace old one
@Luis Hetzler
There is a adjustment screw in modulator that takes a small flat screwdriver. Turn it in to make firmer shifts. If you want to "chirp" the tires on the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts I suggest removing the valve body and in install a shift kit
Dose the kickdown cable have anything to do with the transmission shifting to early
