"The Sway" Prototype?? An Industrial Modern single seat Lounge Chair

  • Hi,
    Most of you who watch my videos know Tim Sway. I know that because he sent a lot of you my way either by his re-edit of my Bar Stool video, or from his shout outs on Reclaimed Audio Podcast. So as a small token of my appreciation for Tim and his work, I almost named this chair after him (haha). Well, it's not like that, the chair is not all re-claimed so I'll make another out of pallets or scrap wood and that will be "the True Sway". This is just a practice run mock up for the real deal! You can see all of Tim's outstanding work on his You Tube Channel, or check out his Website. One of my favourite Sway videos is the "Ballard of el Saguaro" plasma cut cactus lamps. Tim: Huge respect my friend!
    This chair is heavy and not likely to blow away in a storm. I went through lots of 70's and 80's ballads, heaps of podcasts, a few F bombs and it was a thoroughly enjoyable job that I'll never do again (out of steel). I hope you enjoy the video and I hope you check out Tim's work. Send him a message, tell him Scott sent you and tell him I'll buy him a Whisky if I ever get back over his way. Be good and keep smiling.
    If you would like to help me you can contribute at the link below :) / formeindustrious

    Also check out Reclaimed Audio Podcast on i Tunes or SoundCloud or something like that.

    Hey Scott! That is a great design. I am fond of wood and metal brought together and your interpretation of those two materials into an excellent design is impressive.
    Keep that creative momentum going!

    Scott, this is so incredibly inspiring. I loved watching your hollow leg metal table build and thought how creative that was. And this chair takes your creativity to an even higher level. I got chills watching you incorporate full sized CAD (chalk aided design) to pull it all together. You are a true artist and I appreciate all the effort to record, edit and share your passion with us. Thank you! Joel.....

      G'day Tim, unfortunately it fell short of the mark in the reclaimed department, hence Prototype of the ""Sway", so that gives me an opportunity and challenge to build another that I think you would approve of (more so). Although not reclaimed, this sucker should last and last so I'm happy about that. Whilst I enjoyed the journey of the build, the "Sway" concept forced me to think about all the waste we create in our modern lives........and I am still in that space and that's in large part due to the work that you do my friend. Gosh sending this fester to the States, I'm not sure but I'd love for you to have it. Be good, enjoy the moment!

    Beautiful chair! Have you considered getting some of the big pieces of steel laser cut? My local laser shop often ends up remarkably affordable considering they buy steel by the train car load. With Autocad you can design in all sorts of locating tabs and other detail work to make the whole job easier and almost no grinding. Still your design and fabrication, just less bull work.

    • @ScottTurnerformeindustrious
      @ScottTurnerformeindustrious  7 лет назад

      Hi John, yes have definitely considered laser, though at this stage I go the hard way to get the concept out. And you are right I probably need to get into Autocad to make things more repeatable. Thanks John.

    Thank You for the inspiration! I wish I was your neighbor and you could teach me some welding. I am somewhat of a self taught maker and I have the scars to prove it. I am just not brave enough to try and teach myself to weld steel or aluminum as of yet. I don't like the idea of setting my balls on fire while trying to stick two pieces of metal together. Thanks again!

    • @ScottTurnerformeindustrious
      @ScottTurnerformeindustrious  7 лет назад

      First tip, don't put your balls between the welder and the steel and they should be happy (remember that one, it's important). Great comment Vigil Ante and funny!!

    • @vigilante004
      @vigilante004 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah, thanks for that tip. But seriously, your work is very inspirational to me. We have similar methods when it comes to bringing a design to reality. I have been doing a lot of woodworking lately, but I really want to start working with metals. After my hand heals from my Drill press and Forstner bit mishap, I am going to try some welding. I've got my asbestos jockstrap ready........Thanks again, keep making stuff and putting all of it on the tubes. I really appreciate it!

    I hope you take this as constructive criticism because your chair is beautiful :
    This chair must weigh a ton. If you make another one with perhaps a thinner gauge steel you could lighten it up and have a whole lot less work.
    Secondly, i think you should have gone with your original idea for upholstery. With horizontal cylindrical cushions it would have looked far cooler than a car seat. Upholstery has a lot easier learning curve than welding.

      Yes it's heavy for sure, but its unique quality outweighs its actual weight in my view. I don't take into great account the weight of the piece, for the concept coming to life, I guess is my driving force. Lighter gauge steel would work too, though you just have to be careful that the heat doesn't warp the metal. I hope to learn some upholstery one day and try all different techniques. Thank you for your feed back and taking the time to comment, much appreciated.

      If you do try upholstery may I suggest using real upholstery foam. The stuff they sell at most hardware stores and fabric stores will fail in a year or two at best.
      I don't have a clue about how to do RUclips videos but I have made some steel framed upholstered chairs.
      I made my chairs with 1 inch x .065 steel tubing which I bent, notched and fitted up to a full sized drawing. I used the full sized drawings to make a three dimensional plywood jig to tack the frame together. That was what it took for me to have the complex frame come out straight.
      I love making stuff from my mind's eye that requires me to learn new skills. I think you have that same mindset.
