Those round tabs are for the horn connection, sits behind hub and in turn you bend out that straight tab which then makes constant contact for the horn
I just watched about 20 videos on installing this hub with a working horn, this is by far the best solution. That paper clip idea was simple and very effective
Just wanted to let you know how helpful this video was. One of the single best tutorial videos I've seen on RUclips. Installed a cheap Amazon hub, an NRG Quick Release, and a Momo Benetton F1 wheel last night in my NA. Frequently referenced back to this video during the installation. Salvaging the connector from the old wheel was genius and made for a very clean install. Thanks again!
THANK YOU! Everyone on here talking about getting under your car and adjusting the tie rods... The kid that installed the steering wheel on the car I bought had the white dot at at 10-o-clock instead of 12-o-clock. I knew there had to be an eaier fix than adjusting my tie rods.
I finally find a video where they say where this piece goes 13:33 I have a hyundai genesis but the videos do not teach very well how it gets, so I have to find other videos to understand
This is a great video! One thing though I believe all the screws on the NA miata are JIS, not Phillips. If you use a Phillips driver on a really tight JIS fastener it will cam out and strip. I definitely recommend getting some JIS drivers for your Miatas!
@zchsomething you put them right next to each other and scratch up the area where they make contact/where the spade connects so it's bare metal. They should include 2 so you can make them slide against each other that way
i know im digging up old stuff but im also kinda retarded, so that "ring that prevents the horn from spinning around" has a little slit in it, you attach a wire by just wrapping the copper around that ring?
Pretty sure the clock spring is what automatically turns your turn signal off after you turn the wheel a certain amount. So if you remove it, your turn signals won't turn themselves off after you turn. I would recommend leaving it installed
Tried the paperclip thing. The good news is that the horn goes 'beep' when I hit the button. The bad news is the horn also goes beep when I turn the steering wheel left or right.
Paperclip not necessary.take out the contact ring from the hub adapter and run the wire through the hole and connect it to the hub disconnect power wire.more solid power connection compared to a paper which can potentially not make contact.
If I had to guess I would say Those 2 round plates might be used to connect horn wire to . Those plates would have constant contact on the part you used paper clips for .
May not be relevant directly to quick release installation. But wonder if the car already have a racing hub installed and want to remove it before we can install the short hub. Any easy way to remove the racing hub after removing the nut? Struggled quick a bit but still won't able to pull out the racing hub.
If I understand the wiring for your horn, the new wire/paperclip is +12v from the horn relay, and the hub/steering shaft is ground, and the horn button competes the path to ground to energize the relay. I have a '95 someone else modded a bunch including installing the nrg hub but they never got the horn working. I'm now trying to repair it and my steering shaft isn't grounded. I'm struggling to figure out why the shaft isn't a ground or maybe my understanding is off.
The flat rings could be the ground where you used a paper clip. The inner extrusion needs to be bent accordingly to make the proper contact. Let me know.
Does removing the clock spring allow the short hub to not rub on the plastic steering column housing? I kept the clock spring and had to cut the plastic housing in order to allow the steering wheel to turn smoothly.
5 years too late but those pieces sandwich between the part of the hub that dosent quick release and the actual steering column, then you bend the part the protrudes inward and you simply either wrap your horn wire around it, electrical tape them together, or use a shrink wrap sleeve. Hope this helps somebody
If you disconnect the clock spring which has the airbag wires, don't you then have your airbag warning light always on? isn't there a resistor that can be purchased?
Didn’t install the horn, but tried to bridge trick to the airbag connector on vehicle side (before clockspring as it’s removed duh) and my airbag light is still on, unsure why, will update if I find a solution
In other words if you don’t want to do the whole thing with the harness you can just cut the end of the clock spring harness extend the red and green wire attach a paper clip to it to a bolt on the turn signal mechanism and make sure it hits the copper backing of the short hub correct?
When I went to put my short hub on and crank the nut down The plastic housing around the steering column was pinched between the hub and started to deform.... You guys didn’t have a problem with this?
Screws thread into a part. A self tapping screw makes its own thread. A machine screw screws into a preformed thread in a part. A bolt screws into a nut.
So Ik this video was a long time ago but what are all the things you need for the installation called. I have a wheel and a quick relese what else do I need ? And also do all quick relses work with all wheels ?
Ive made a few horn contact kits out of them to... You can find a way to mount them to the clock spring holes and run horn to it. So that it makes contact with the contact plate on the back of the hub.
I just got a Miata and it has a Momo steering wheel, I would like to get a quick release for it. (The horn works on it) Will any quick release hub work with the wheel? And all the horn and airbag wiring should be done because I don’t have an airbag light and the horn works with the center button.
This video seems like a good tutorial but I followed it step by step and my airbag light is still on somehow and my horn only works by moving the wheel and the button does absolutely nothing
Nothing, but you need to be able to leave enough wiring to make connections for your airbag light or it will make a terrible noise and leave a airbag light on your dash. The wire that is red/grey stripe (some NA models idk for certain) will be your horn, you can make a male connection using some cheap wiring, then connect that single male wire to one of the connections on the quick release. Adversely if you don't care about little buzzing + the light for the airbag or plan on unplugging it then chop that shit. IG: reformedprize
sorry, and the other two wires that remain are the ground and airbag, you butt connect them and it shorts the two together OR you could soldering in a 1000 om resistor and be a proper engineer/electrician.
It worked for us. It was flashing until we shorted the connections. If that doesn't work for you, you will need to figure out the resistance and add the right sized resistor between the connection.
yeah you can. some people just run the hub without the quick release, especially when they have a dished wheel which makes it too close to them because of the quick release
Just bought a miata 7 hours ago. Stayed up all night watching mod videos. This is BY FAR the most helpful video ive watched
Really appreciate that feedback! We have another miata video coming out this week or next that should be helpful as well :)
SAME had mine 3 weeks now, best tutorial i've found
Haha same! Just bought mine two days ago and the horn isn’t working so I’m here trying to get it to work
Those round tabs are for the horn connection, sits behind hub and in turn you bend out that straight tab which then makes constant contact for the horn
ahhh ok. Makes sense. Thanks!
Essentially what the paper clip is doing right?
Yes. Not entirely sure how to get the other things too work but I guess I would just need to play with them and figure it out
I just watched about 20 videos on installing this hub with a working horn, this is by far the best solution. That paper clip idea was simple and very effective
Glad it helped!

just finished installing my first quick release, and i followed this vid step by step, and im thankful for a proper video👌
Great to hear!
Hard to imagine there will ever be a better tutorial than this. Thank you so much! I've subscribed! :)
You rule so much I was so hesitant but after watching this I cannot wait to tackle this
Glad to help!
I was so totally stumped with my horn lol thank you so much this helps a lot, gonna try fixing my messy job this weekend
Lol glad it helped!
Thank you guys I followed every step definitely the best tutorial I found.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Best video showing step by step iv seen about installing one of these
Thanks! Just hope it helps :)
Perfect video thank you!!!!! Why can’t everyone make how to videos this good!!
i was looking for a way to get my horn to still work thank you so much!!!!!!!
My NRG steering wheel set just arrived and waiting for me to pick up from the post office...yay!!!! Gen 2.0 quick release and USPL steering wheel
Woo! Enjoy
16:09 put one between the hub and quick release to create a ground tab for the horn wire. only used on certain setups.
the most helpful miata horn video!! thanks!!
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Bolts have a smooth shank between the thread and the head, machine screws are threaded along their whole length, and regular screws have a pointy tip.
You’re goated for making install videos
I finally find a video where they say where this piece goes 13:33
I have a hyundai genesis but the videos do not teach very well how it gets, so I have to find other videos to understand
I know this Video is old but a GREAT walkthrough! Those rings are Grounding Rings not all horn buttons will ground nicely with all adapters or QR's.
This is a great video! One thing though I believe all the screws on the NA miata are JIS, not Phillips. If you use a Phillips driver on a really tight JIS fastener it will cam out and strip. I definitely recommend getting some JIS drivers for your Miatas!
Yes, I came here to say the same. If you do any amount of work on these things, get the proper JIS tools, it'll save headaches in the long run
"We didn't need these rings, we just assumed you were meant to ground with a paper clip" lol
Lol fair 😅
I'd vote that those are machine screws. Great video! I'm surprised how many people aren't using locktite on assemblies like this.
Thanks! Locktite is often a good idea for sure!
Thank you for making this video
No problem! Glad it helped!
Great video very helpful gotta do it to my Miata once I get the chance
Glad it helped!
those "rings" are essentially why you didn't need that paperclip lol...You attach the wire to that tab and it functions as a wire with a round base ;)
Thanks! I wish I could have found something to let us know that when in installing lol
@zchsomething you put them right next to each other and scratch up the area where they make contact/where the spade connects so it's bare metal. They should include 2 so you can make them slide against each other that way
@zchsomething sorry, I had an NA! The wire was red with a green stripe for mine (if it's the same)
i know im digging up old stuff but im also kinda retarded, so that "ring that prevents the horn from spinning around" has a little slit in it, you attach a wire by just wrapping the copper around that ring?
@@hunterdelgado2402 look up a "crimp wire connector" and picture the cup styled ones slipping over those tabs ;)
The clock spring is essentially the wire and the paperclip but for the regular wheel
Pretty good anology 👍👍
Awesome vid probably best one out there
Thanks! :) We do at best to not leave anything out
Thanks for the video man.
You got it!
I've looked st a few guides, and some kept the clock spring, while others removed it, what makes the difference?
Pretty sure the clock spring is what automatically turns your turn signal off after you turn the wheel a certain amount. So if you remove it, your turn signals won't turn themselves off after you turn. I would recommend leaving it installed
Anthony Parks I removed my clock spring in my car and it still turns off my signals
The turn signals in our buddy's Miata without issue
Those metal rings he mentioned is for hooking up the ground if you dont have a grund wire and instead put it straight on the hub as a ground instead
Thank you for that! A few others have commented regarding that as well. We know for next time!
Tried the paperclip thing. The good news is that the horn goes 'beep' when I hit the button.
The bad news is the horn also goes beep when I turn the steering wheel left or right.
lol It might take a little bit of playing with. Supposedly those rings that are included can be used like the paperclip to get the horn to work.
This is such a good video :)
Glad it helped!
Awesome tutorial, subd.
Glad it was helpful!
Definitely a bolt. Perfect definition.
:)
Paperclip not necessary.take out the contact ring from the hub adapter and run the wire through the hole and connect it to the hub disconnect power wire.more solid power connection compared to a paper which can potentially not make contact.
We will have to try that next time. Thanks for the tip!
Excellent video. Appreciate the quality of install!
Thank you!
If I had to guess I would say Those 2 round plates might be used to connect horn wire to . Those plates would have constant contact on the part you used paper clips for .
Yes that is what they are for! A few have commented with that solution. Thanks!
Great video thanks
Hope it helps you out!
Actually done right. Thanks
No problem!
May not be relevant directly to quick release installation. But wonder if the car already have a racing hub installed and want to remove it before we can install the short hub. Any easy way to remove the racing hub after removing the nut? Struggled quick a bit but still won't able to pull out the racing hub.
Unfortunately I have not done that and it has been quite awhile since we shot this video so I'm not sure. Sorry I couldn't be more help with that :(
If I understand the wiring for your horn, the new wire/paperclip is +12v from the horn relay, and the hub/steering shaft is ground, and the horn button competes the path to ground to energize the relay. I'm struggling to figure out why the shaft isn't a ground or maybe my understanding is off.
Figured out it was just ball bearing grease was perfectly insulating the shaft from when I parked, turned wheel a tad and the ground came back.
Wow that's crazy. Had to be a fun one to figure out.
The flat rings could be the ground where you used a paper clip. The inner extrusion needs to be bent accordingly to make the proper contact. Let me know.

If you disconnect the clock spring which has the airbag wires, don't you then have your airbag warning light always on? isn't there a resistor that can be purchased?
We solved this by shorting it out on this car but that will vary from year to year. Most will probably need a resistor.
Those tabs at the end are for a easier ground connection
Good to know!
hi i was just wondering if u half to put the silver mark on the top 14:38
Didn’t install the horn, but tried to bridge trick to the airbag connector on vehicle side (before clockspring as it’s removed duh) and my airbag light is still on, unsure why, will update if I find a solution
Does this install keep from the Airbag buzzer and light from flashing and making noise? Or do you have a method to correct that? Great install video
Glad to help! What we did kept the airbag off in this car. It may vary from car to car tho.
@@TheSundaeDrive I have a 95 NA8. I just heard the light and a beeping sound happens when the airbags disconnected.
In other words if you don’t want to do the whole thing with the harness you can just cut the end of the clock spring harness extend the red and green wire attach a paper clip to it to a bolt on the turn signal mechanism and make sure it hits the copper backing of the short hub correct?
I may be wrong but i feel like the silver piece is whats supposed to be there instead of the paperclip.
When I went to put my short hub on and crank the nut down The plastic housing around the steering column was pinched between the hub and started to deform.... You guys didn’t have a problem with this?
Did you figure out how to fix this?
Did you have to reconnect the ground wire you took off from the white clip?
just bought a 92 mx5 going to do this asap
Enjoy!
Screws thread into a part. A self tapping screw makes its own thread. A machine screw screws into a preformed thread in a part. A bolt screws into a nut.
love when people still comment about this and it reminds me of this job haha. thank you :)
Will this work with a moza sim racing wheel? I cant tell if the quick release systems are the same
Between 8:00 and 8:06 where did the red wire come from????
There a wire coming out from spade connector? I have spade connector on but air bag light still flashing
The thing at the end u put in the hub and connect the wire as a ground
So Ik this video was a long time ago but what are all the things you need for the installation called. I have a wheel and a quick relese what else do I need ? And also do all quick relses work with all wheels ?
Is the wheel position in relatively the same place as the original boss?
Thanks for the vid!
It's similar but not exactly the same. I want to say it sat further away from the driver but not 100% sure. Don't drive it and it's been awhile lol
@@TheSundaeDrive cheers
those ring are your paperclips
So what did you do with the 2 circular thin shims with the tabs sticking out of them?
Nothing lol. Apparently they are for what we substituted a paper clip
Those are grounding plates... Some hubs are coated with something and have no bare metal to ground to...
Ahh good to know. So weird that nothing mentions them anywhere online that we could find.
Ive made a few horn contact kits out of them to... You can find a way to mount them to the clock spring holes and run horn to it. So that it makes contact with the contact plate on the back of the hub.
nice! So you keep the clock spring with the quick release kit?
So if I did this whole process w out removing the clock spring part the horn would still work??
As long as you did what we did your horn will still work 👍
Does the Quick Release rattle when driving? The one installed on my NA when I purchased it rattled like HELL, and I want to avoid that.
i can’t figure out how to get the airbag harness off!!!! it was a very good video i’m not sure it might be stuck or something. anybody else?
^ it won’t clip off.
How was it for the signals and wipers? I believe that steering wheel has 2.5 inch deep? Did you have to stretch your fingers out more ?
Any update on how well the stitching on the steering wheel is holding up ? I plan on buying the same one but in white
my paper clip came lose while driving around lots of curves - now it honks randomly - time to take it apart
Another thing you could do is just take out the bulb for the air bag light, lol that’s what I did
Is that the only airbag in the car? If not, I would just be concerned about other airbags having an issue and not being aware of it
The ring is for the ground
How does the spade connector trick work? Does it not matter what year Miata it is? I have a 96
for some reason the short hub is rubbing a lot on the back part and it’s hard to turn? help please
So the paper clip is connected to the red green wire and it is working as + am i right? And the wire at the hub works as - thank ypu for answer :)
Yup! The hub is the ground connection
Will my signal lights click back off when I make a turn ?
No issues with that for our buddy's Miata
Can this is same if i want do it to a 03 matrix?
I just got a Miata and it has a Momo steering wheel, I would like to get a quick release for it. (The horn works on it) Will any quick release hub work with the wheel? And all the horn and airbag wiring should be done because I don’t have an airbag light and the horn works with the center button.
I am not sure but someone else watching may know!
It's a SRK-160 short hub+ SRK-250BK quick release, there are clones on amazon as well. Good luck!
Does this kit move the wheel closer to the driver/create more leg room while driving?
depends on if you get a wheel that sticks out more or less
Where do you get the headlight eyelids, I can't find them anywhere
Not sure. It isn't our car
so happy my AIRBAG light is off you are the best i love u
Glad it helped!
That may depend on the state/location. I'm not sure. You definitely lose safety with this and is intended for race applications.
when i fix the same setup the steering wheel is more harder to turn...how can i fix that,
This video seems like a good tutorial but I followed it step by step and my airbag light is still on somehow and my horn only works by moving the wheel and the button does absolutely nothing
The paper clip is the jankest part of this whole setup and the most frustrating thing
agreed - supposedly those rings were weren't sure what to do with can be used but I'm not sure exactly how to
looking for someone in Los Angeles that can do this if you have a suggestion
I'm sure someone will comment with some suggestions for you! I don't know that area unfortunately.
How did y’all get the ding in your quick release
its the 2.0 nrg quick release that makes a ding when you put it on
the metal quick releases only ding so of you got carbon fiber
What happens if I cut off the wires for the clock spring?
Nothing, but you need to be able to leave enough wiring to make connections for your airbag light or it will make a terrible noise and leave a airbag light on your dash. How did you guys did the conector for the airbag light?
We show it in the video. Shorting the connection worked for us but doesn't seem to work for everyone.
@@TheSundaeDrive yeah but how you did the spade connector thing i dont get that part so thay i can try it
so if you do this you won't have an airbag?
Correct
@@TheSundaeDrive then is the wheel illegal
They are intended for race use. You would need to check your local laws to determine legality.
What is the part number for the steering wheel?
All the parts are linked to in the description :)
has this 100% been proven to fit on an ND?
what is that plastic piece he is talking about at 10:48
my clips are broken on that piece and was wondering if its a major deal, like if it has to be removed
Shorting the 2 airbag wires together does not eliminate the airbag light. It will flash at you.
It worked for us. It was flashing until we shorted the connections. If that doesn't work for you, you will need to figure out the resistance and add the right sized resistor between the connection.
This may sound like a dumb question but can the wheel and hub be used without the quick release?
I don't believe so
yeah you can. some people just run the hub without the quick release, especially when they have a dished wheel which makes it too close to them because of the quick release
You didn’t use a hub?
Really well done. There are some HORRIBLE / AWFUL / CRINGEWORTHY attempts at a proper wheel swap. This one puts all the others to shame.
Thank you! Glad it helped!
How does it compare to the stock offset?
Anyone have a better solution to the horn set up? I feel like this way is kind of a hazard
The plastic trim around the hub is too small on mine
