You should see the one where Howard Gayle of Liverpool was hacked down in the box in 1981 against Bayern Munich, Stevie wonder would have seen it was blatant penalty
I think they were mainly sold because of the UEFA foreign player cap that was introduced in 1991 - you were only allowed to name up to 3 non-English players in your match squad for UEFA competitions, plus 2 who had already been playing in the country for 5 years - this was until the Bosman ruling made in 95. Before 91 you could use 3 foreign players plus any number who had been in the country for 5 years - and I think British players were treated as English under these previous (1978) rules. Basically Liverpool had 5 other "foreign" players who were considered better at that time and Souness wanted to build a first 11 that could be used in all competitions (rather than having to change his team for European games).
@@roberthatlem4645 King Kenny bought Hutchinson. The worst signing by Souness was David James. The only signings he made that were alright were: Thomas, Bjornerbye, Wright, Jones. Some other bad signings Souness made are: Saunders, Dicks, Kozma. It hurts even more when he rejected the likes of Cantona and Keane. But if we didnt fall so badly we would never have the joy we felt at Istanbul so i would not change a thing
Rob jones was better than Neville at right back, if he hadn’t have suffered with shin splints which ended up ending his career he would have made more appearances for England than Neville would have.
Excellent goal from Michael Thomas but the final as a spectacle was poor, Sunderland were nervous and overmatched, Liverpool only had to reach decent to win
At the time none of us could see the dominant United years coming. We won the league two years before, but definitely didn’t think we’d have to wait 28 years for another one and see our main rivals rise
I remember this, watching it at home. I was a plastic Liverpool fan. Not from anywhere near there just loved them as a kid in the late 80's/1990. But I recall feeling sad watching this as I could sense Liverpool's decline. They bought so much rubbish. I remember thinking at that time, why a club that big, were buying such mediocre players and so their downfall didn't surprise me.
David Lowes I was in Liverpool at the time I would’ve been 7 years old. From Ghana 🇬🇭 my family lived in Liverpool till 93 then we moved to Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦! Wow take me back!! I loved my childhood so much!!
Thomas tried doing everything he could to "redeem" 89 (Arsenal title win) although I'm not sure anything was going to be enough. Was probably our best Midfielder during the Evans era (94 - 97). But yes I think our decline was pretty evident at this stage given the players we had bought. I actually thought we'd sold Houghton by this stage but he was there. One of the rare highlights of the otherwise depressing 90's
Bosman rule. The change in club office come with his leaving. After that anyone who was left with 2y of contract was offer an exstenstion, if he rejected he would go to transfer list. The club didnt want to loose any more money. Macca made a good choice for himself.
Mcmanaman allowed his contract to run down, despite indicating that he would sign an extension...which he never had any intention. He betrayed the club and the fans...which is why he'll never be remembered as a legend player.
1:55 how did no one see that blatant penalty?
They didn't have VAR back then.
@@DigorengDadakan Does anyone need VAR for that?

Mark Wright lifts the f.a. cup and shouts "you f***ing beauty" before apologizing to the Royalty. Brilliant.

Even to this day, I could not grasp how Souness let Saunders go, together with Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton!!!!

Love you Liverpool..💓💓💗
The ref had a shocker but we still won anyway :)
Poor Sunderland . I fell mercy for them .
through what they have gone through over time. but Liverpool was clearly superior.
Ian Rush scored in 3 FA cup finals in 6 years.
I love this game

Liverpool is unstoppable
i was there all those years ago was in the corner had good view of thomas goal
A used to have the life of me English teacher after this one .am liverpool supporter since 6. born 78 in alnwick lived in town from 90
This game reminds me of Micheal Thomas , very good footballer can play in RB n Midfield , He retired in 2001 or 2002..
ahhh, the Souness era.. how on earth did Liverpool think Mark Walters was LFC material.. the beginning of the dry spell!
It was the logical step according to the Boot Room tradition...Souness was the wrong choice unfortunately
Tanner, Ruddock, Paul Stewart, Nigel Clough, Hutchinson, Torben Piecnik (and probably more)... all worse than Mark Walters.😊
@@roberthatlem4645 Also barry Venison, Ronnie Rosenthal and Igor biscan.
@@dee7781 yess, but souness didnt buy them 😉😉

cracking goal that from Thomas

He owed us that from what he did at anfield in 89 🤣.
Sunderland had some very good chances early doors. Great finish by Thomas, has to be one of the best cup final goals ever that.
Bringing in Paul Stewart, Julian Dicks, letting Peter Beardsley go... Oh the early 90s.

As a Sunderland supporter this game bloody hurts, but Michael Thomas’s goal was beautiful.

I remembered watching this FA Cup final way back in 1992,....It felt like yesterday,.... "You'll Never Walk Alone"🥅⚽🏃🏆🥇💯💖

Why didn't Souness lead the team out?
@@deanhowell5936 he had a heart attack 1 week before the match
Liverpool was brilliant against Sunderland well done reds ⚽️👑
Micheal Thomas didn't make the Euro '92 squad but Carlton Palmer was a starter. Thomas was a quality player he deserved more caps.
Salah 💖💖💖👍
Sunderland shirt was ahead of its time.

Macca was ready for Albion in 1992, but Taylor did't see that. England needed young talents like Le Tissier, Anderton, Jones, McManaman...

would have loved to watch Rob Jones's career without that injury. such as shame.
Would have liked to see him continue at right back, not get shoved to left back.
YNWA. Dont sell Salah Plz
This match would have contained the last ever back pass that a goalkeeper was aloud to pick up in English club football.
Mcmanaman was such a fine player. How did they let him leave
