@@thefiresidefarm When I rendered mine, I didn't use any water in the crockpot. I think I should have in order to prevent the suet from burning a little. The end product has a bit of a strong smell. Not sure if I ruined it.
@@Millstone_Firewood did the suet brown or just melt? Depending on the diet of the cow and other factors, the rendered tallow can have a stronger odor. Deer tallow is generally regarded as "stronger" than beef tallow. You didn't necessarily burn it😊 but there are many videos out there showing the water method if you want to check them out!
Thank you for the excellent video. I wanted to find a good explanation of the slow cooker, no-water method. You gave many important details and why you do them. This was very helpful. I don't have a crockpot but rather an instant pot that you are supposed to be able to use as a slow cooker. I will try this once I get down more details on how to use the instant pot as a slow cooker. I got the slow cooker lid, so that's one thing. The instant pot videos all seem to use water and use it as a pressure cooker. I may call the company to ask about temperature settings, etc, since it has a stainless steel bowl and I don't want it to scorch.
What have i done wrong if there is still liquid in the bottom of the jar? Its like the tallow is sitting on top (3/4) of jar. Also how long would this last in the fridge. Thank you... great video!
Suet is not tallow simply by it's very nature it is very hard and almost waxey when rendered and cooled. Tallow is intra-muscular fat that has a different texture when rendered and cooled. These two fats are apples and oranges in their qualities and properties, but in modern times are associated to be one and the same.
Thanks for sharing this. I just rendered about 5 lbs in a crockpot.
Nice! I'm looking into making firestarters soon with some deer that I rendered. The deer tallow is a little too pungent to cook with 😬

@@thefiresidefarm It didn't burn but I think it may have browned a bit. I'll know better next time. Never messed with deer tallow.
Very helpful, thank you!

Hey there! Did you add water to the suet when it was rendering? That's the only way there should be liquid in the tallow after it cools and hardens
I would say look into a band saw to trim the fat
I am doing around 8 pounds in a 8 quart crockpot. Is that too much?
It might be...you want a small amount on the bottom so that the melted stuff doesn't burn while the other suet is still heating up
Do we have to cut from frozen?
No but it makes it way easier in my opinion😁
