Embracing the Slow Season | Winter Homestead Chores
Try Monterey Disease Control, AKA Double Nickel, I've had tomatoe issues, it almost solved the issues.
Try Piel de Sapo, aka Christmas Melon, is has done OK in our 9B temps, and they keep real well open pollinated, but ive had to buy seed, as they dont do well from seed saving, the immature ones keep into the spring, I cut them for the chickens, for a melon they keep amazingly, almost like a squash. Almost.
Try and get some Tepary beans from Arizona, they will thrive in your zone. Also Sunn Hemp is awesome, a legume that it very drought tolerant. Great soil builder, and does well chopped down to 12" then it comes back with a vengance, I'm in a zone 9B, so I cover crop two season and rotate every year, building soil too. Get some Phoenix Tomato seed, they were developed to take heat, they cant take 9B but you should be OK, great taste.
Are the flowers edible?
"I'm not an herbalist" ... But you do alllll the herbalist things. Hi fellow folk herbalist. ✌️
Thanks for sharing
Well done, I learned alot! I love in Arizona and will look gor that mill program ! Thanks for a great video ❤
I would be interested to know what kind of light you use indoors for the tower?
Hey there! They are just shop lights that I bought off Amazon. 5K daylight bulbs
Thanks for the information about the shade cloth shouldn't touch the plant- no other gardener has said that. I have mine draped over my tomatoes ( they do have cages) but the cloth still touches my plants. My tomatoes are in containers and the cloth just sits on top of the cages. I noticed you only have shade cloth over the top do you only need it over the top of the tomatoes? I have mine totally surrounded in cloth- all sides of the containers are under the cloth. I live in zone 8 a but we are hot and humid. I am still getting flowers on my tomatoes will they have time to fully develope and turn red before November 15th(our predicted first frost)?
They don't need to be surrounding the plant completely...though it's not harmful if they are. You just don't want it so close to the plants that it traps heat (like a blanket). You should have enough time for tomatoes by the first frost
🎉 congrats… and thank you! As a struggling NM gardener your vids are an inspiration
I'm so glad!
Can you just put in a canning jar or do you have to dry first
Need to dry first
surely you would soak the beans first ?
Thank you for the excellent video. I wanted to find a good explanation of the slow cooker, no-water method. You gave many important details and why you do them. This was very helpful. I don't have a crockpot but rather an instant pot that you are supposed to be able to use as a slow cooker. I will try this once I get down more details on how to use the instant pot as a slow cooker. I got the slow cooker lid, so that's one thing. The instant pot videos all seem to use water and use it as a pressure cooker. I may call the company to ask about temperature settings, etc, since it has a stainless steel bowl and I don't want it to scorch.
A coffee grinder works fairly well
I'm in Arkansas and I have high winds and tornadoes, how well does the shay cloth hold up to those elements? (Not necessarily tornadoes but how does it hold up to gusty high winds)
It holds up very well. I got grommets installed every 6 inches so it is lashed down pretty tight to the steucture
Which book of Rosemarys are you referring to? I love this video and am finding it so helpful!
Tea from the leaves??
Hello! I am curious what I did wrong I did the exact same thing.. my lemons were just barely floating in the top like hers are but it ended up going bad after a week or so!
How long does the balm last in the jar at room temp?
I give everything about a year
Congratulations. Wedding need not to be expensive to be memorable. Make it simple with your loved ones.
I am in zone 13 india. I just realized I need the shade net. My bitter gourd vine flowering but the leaves are burning. produce also comes in small lize even though there are many fruits coming out and lots of flowers. But my plant taking really a lot of heat. I need to get the shade net asap.
I was literally driving around with my friend today in SE Arizona, and I was literally asking what those red berries were... Now I know... I'm so glad I stumbled on ur channel!:)
Oh hooray!
You are beautiful and smart. I pick up the bean pods and boil them for an hour or so, and make tea-like drink,I put ground cinnamon in mine. It's sweet and I drink it alot in the summertime.
I brew it in gallon jars ,I added some more ingredients, so I never run out ,I drink a shot glass every day
@barbarafallin2038 - how long is it fresh for once its done brewing?
@finmaxx it stays fresh ,for at least 3mos, or more
Moving to the Joshua Tree area; learning about the flora and fauna - your video was terrific, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
My row of tomatoes went quickly from nice and full to almost dead but the tops and some side branches are bouncing back
What have i done wrong if there is still liquid in the bottom of the jar? Its like the tallow is sitting on top (3/4) of jar. Also how long would this last in the fridge. Thank you... great video!
Hey there! Did you add water to the suet when it was rendering? That's the only way there should be liquid in the tallow after it cools and hardens
I'm in it for health. It grows naturally all over where I live, which I don't like or am used to but trying to make the most out of it. Point being, though not in it for the money, I saw it for sale at $90 a pint for untrained tincture! Maybe you can make a dime...
what percent shade cloth do you have above your tomatoes and where do you order it? thank you!!
Hey there! Growers solutions is where I got it. I believe it's 40%
You have a lot growing over there. Are you able to grow during the winter months?
Yes I am! It gets to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the coldest months so I am able to grow brassica through the winter
@@thefiresidefarm nice! I'm zone 6b so I only grow from April - October.
Great Peronality. Great Real Talk. And your cap, hilarious. America needs a lot more of this. Just found your channel and subscribed. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
Yaa.row. Like everyone else pronounces it. 😅
Hahaha
I made mesquite bean coffee by roasting the pods and pouring hot water over. No caffeine or acid.
Do you find your cattle panel trellises get too hot in the summer? We use UV protecting shade cloth for our raised bed garden, and wanted to install the trellis arches for our squash, but were worried the trellis would be too hot for their tendrils/vines. Thanks!
Nope they don't seem to have a problem with it at all 😁
I'm going out to check further but noticed grass hoppers in our garden about a month ago and then all of a sudden the leaves on the tomato plants started curling. We thought it was the heat. I'll double check 1/4 of our plants today. Thank you for your video.
I am doing around 8 pounds in a 8 quart crockpot. Is that too much?
It might be...you want a small amount on the bottom so that the melted stuff doesn't burn while the other suet is still heating up
Heartbreaking. I have two. One has it.
I planted two mesquite trees in my yard here in Scottsdale, AZ 7 years ago. They first started flowering this Spring and I have seen some pods on the ground now but my trees don't seem to be anywhere like your mesquite. Mine don't have spikes! I don't think there are any places where I could have my pods processed/ground anywhere near my area but I would love to use them for tea. Makes me wonder if I could make tea from young mesquite leaves!?! Thank you for all the info you shared. I am looking forward to learning more about how I could use my mesquite for food and a source of nutrients.
Bermuda grass is eternal. I have used cardboard and the heavy plastic weed cloth. It always comes back. The only areas that i have had success with removing it are the areas where I have completely dug up and turned soil. Two things that have pushed out the grass are clover and St. Augustine. The St. Augustine is just trading one problem for another, though lol.
Possibly squash wilt? A bacterium spread by cucumber beetles.
Never drink it pure but take a maximum of two tablespoons and dilute it with water, the vinegar can damage your throat/stomach/liver/kidneys/intestines.
What about in oil or honey for children? Dried?
I’m new to your channel. I live in Puerto De Luna which is 10 miles south of Santa Rosa and I’m trying to figure out how to garden in the desert. I’m originally from Illinois but I’ve been here for 20 years and I’ve never been able to grow a garden. I’m hoping for some help.
That's what I'm here for! Please check out my videos and if you have any questions let me know
Where are you located? Im in Carlsbad, NM! I just started my 1st ever garden this year and what a mess lol! I just went for it though and wow I'm learning! I just got to harvest some figs from my tree!
Congratulations on your fig!! I have tried and failed at every single fruit tree I've planted here 🙃. I'm nearer to El paso, so you definitely get more rain and are a little bit colder than I am.
@@thefiresidefarm well if it helps, the fig tree was already established before we moved in a yr ago lol. Idk about more rain lol and being cooler! I just lost a my 1st chicken 2 days ago because of the heat and almost lost another same day but I barely caught it so was able to help her recover. I literally knew nothing about anything until this yr when I started composting,a garden and got 4 chickens. I have grown tremendously and view things so different! I look at trees, trash(compost material) and everything else so different because I appreciate things like never before.
We seriously need to come up with something that solves the squash bug problem. They seem to just love the southwest. Seriously disgusting, vile, horrible. Great to find a fellow NM gardener- while not a video gal, most certainly keen to see more of us sharing our learning and experiences. Keen to know the long bean varieties you are growing. Can recommend Plants of the Southwest in ABQ for good NM seed varieties.
Hey there! Yah they have been so bad this year I'm considering taking a break from any curcubits next year to see if I can get the population numbers down. I don't burn my garden scraps so they definitely overwinter in my mulch. 😕 The long bean varieties I'm growing is the adapargus bean from baker creek. I've been growing them for years so I usually use my saved seed to replant the following year. They are are amazing producer and just never quit in the heat!
Is there another base you can use besides apple cider vinegar for those who can't drink it?
There may be, although I only know of the kind that uses vinegar. It doesn't have to be apple cider though.
I’m Canadian in southern Japan. It’s very hot (105F) and humid. Do my watermelon fruit need protection from the hot afternoon sun? Wonder if the vines would also benefit from some shade cloth draped over a frame like yours?
I would definitely think so! But if your area is hot but still recieves a lot of overcast from clouds it may not be a good idea.
@@thefiresidefarm Thanks! I decided to go ahead and build a simple frame and install shade cloth yesterday over my watermelon. My area has clear blue sky every day this time of year with no cloud cover, so the sun is very intense. I was surprised, the Garden Center had 50% and 70%-blockage shade cloth and the staff recommended I use the 70%. We’ll see how the watermelon responds. I’m slightly worried the 70% is blocking too much sun, but then again with the very high heat here, maybe the watermelon will appreciate the protection and grow better. I have 6 plants with about 20 watermelon fruit now.
