    I live in Albuquerque and this is my 1st year gardening. The book I recommend is called Down to Earth. I believe it was created by master gardeners in Albuquerque and is specific to gardening in the Albuquerque area.

      Thanks so much for your recommendation! For those that are interested in the book it's called "Down to Earth. A Gardeners Guide to the Albuqueque Area". It can be found on thriftbooks.com and several other retail outlets if you google it.

    I like this video, all questions very interesting amazing answers, but like you know we have the same interesting ways of growing a garden with no rain, the heat and strong winds, like always love it ❤

    Thank you for this video! I love hearing about your growing situation. Thanks for answering my questions! I appreciate your perspective because I have the same dry heat even though I live in Norcal. Sometimes I feel frustrated at how pathetic my plants start looking as that hot dry air saps the strength out of them. I am looking at growing more natives because I want to find edible plants that can thrive in my conditions. We don't have a summer monsoon season but we do get rain in the winter. I did not know that some of those seeds are primed for only thriving during the monsoon season. I appreciate you because you are helping unlock this puzzle of growing in a harsh environment.

    I wonder how clay pipes for plumbing would work? Just pondering an idea.

    I'm glad you made this! I'm just across the border in northern AZ so we have a very similar climate 😊 I've been curious about your shade cloth, how does it hold up to the high winds?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  2 месяца назад +1

      Hey neighbor! My shade cloth is holding up wonderfully through all of the winds. There are metal grommets every few inches and paracord is woven through the grommets, around the structure, along the entire perimeter. The grommets have never ripped and the shade cloth does not appear to have stretched out at all. I'm overall pleased with the quality!

    Have you had any problems using straw mulch from Tractor Supply? Do you recommend this over the free mulch from the recycling center?

    • @thefiresidefarm
      @thefiresidefarm  2 месяца назад

      I have actually never purchased straw mulch from tractor supply. Most of my straw comes from my neighbor. She has horses and I will just use the wasted hay and straw that's left behind.
      I've used the city compost once and had a bad experience so I've never gone back. Unfortunately I can't speak to the quality of mulch at the local center.

    You take an annual trip to Missouri?! :D

    Do you think the Sandia Park area will be hard to garden in? I will be new to the area and we will be sitting on 13 acres of flat land tucked away in the mountains. I think I will wait till next year to start a garden as I have no idea what the weather is like up there coming from Las Cruces. The ground seems to be reddish dirt. I'm excited to see what I can do but am worried as I will only have a personal well not intended for irrigation so limited to about 900 gallons a day which should be more then enough for 2 people and a personal garden.

      13 acres tucked away in the mountains?! That sounds amazing! Sandia park is up by albuquerque right? ABQ gets a little more rain than us and it's a fair bit greener up there. Being up in the mountains you might deal with colder winters and a slightly shorter growing season, but parts of Bernalillo County can be really beautiful! I'm excited for you!

    Why can't you grow fruit in your area??? Is it by choice or too hot/cold??? That comment really stuck out for me since I really wanna grow fruit up in Sandia Park area.

      @@thefiresidefarm love the honesty, I seem to have a green thumb for rose bushes down in Las Cruces, but they aren't gonna feed me lol. Want to switch my growing skills to a more sustainable lifestyle.

      @lizuranga that's awesome and totally encouraged your green thumb to more sustainable pursuits! Roses intimdate me! I'm so terrible with ornamentals already 😅..I feel like roses are the picky teenagers of the plant world.
