FUJIFILM'S BEST MID LENGTH LENS (GFX EDITION)

- If I had to pick one lens to sit on my Fujifilm GFX system until the end of my career it would be this one. The Fujifilm GF 55mm F1.7 is magic but with so many lenses to choose from between the 45mm and 65mm range somebody had to rank them all in order. We discuss Autofocus speeds, size and weight, and quality across four of the current lens options for the medium format GFX mount and show images taken with each of them.
The camera world is absolutely exploding lately. After the wildly successful launch of the new Fujifilm X100VI the attention of the photography community is on these systems and while the X cameras are remarkable it really is in the GFX Medium Format cameras that Fujifilm hides their very best tech. As a full time GFX photographer I've had the chance to test these cameras and all of the Fujifilm lenses for them out in the field and have come to a pretty rock solid conclusion.
The GF55mm lens might just be the coolest lens on the market today. Across any brand. This video breaks down my view as to why I feel that way, shows actual images taken in different lighting scenarios with it and compares it to other lenses that I love as well as one that I don't.

Awesome video dude
THANK YOU! You a GFX shooter?
@@mileswittboyer.photoco Yeah, and super happy! Been using the system for one and a half years now, and I am in-love with the glass.. all the lenses are outstanding.
Love seeing you find that "RUclips Voice" of yours. 55 is def magic and very much looking forward to moving into the GFX system for photo.
Man. It’s a battle to have the confidence to record these videos and know sometimes there’s a stutter or a mistake that I want to edit out. Thanks for being awesome and encouraging
@@mileswittboyer.photoco OH I KNOW! It's terrifying but keep showing up it only gets better! As you know people have herd info 100 different ways but they haven't herd it from you. So your voice, and knowledge might impact a few people I think if that's the case it's worth the little stutters lol
Confused between the 32-64 and 55..please help!
If you want a 50 ish focal length (it’s 44mm equiv on full frame) get the 55 f1.7. The quality of shot from the lens is nicer than the zoom and you have a wide open bokeh similar to a canon 50mm f1.2 full frame also wide open.
Shots are super sharp and the colours are incredible. It’s a little loud focusing but it doesn’t bother me too much.
If you want a single lens and need to vary focal length then the zoom makes more sense. It’s a great lens too.
It took me a long time for me to like the 50mm, but now it is one of my favourites. I sold the 45, 63 and 120, kept the 23, 30, 55 and 110, but also the 50. When I just want to walkabout, the 50 is king. The 55 is phenomenal though. I might add the Mitakon 65/1.4 (Zhongyi makes the Mitakon) or the 80/1.7, but I am not in a hurry. At the moment I am doing 65:24 with the 30mm. Fantastic look.
Thanks for this! Very insightful! Of the 9 GF lenses I own, the 63 is one of my favourites. Used for VOGUE, ELLE, etc...
Great video and very entertaining!
The 55 1.7 GFX lens has been pretty much acknowledged as a top notch optic but a few reviewers have identified the lack a linear motor and noisy autofocus as a con - but you didn't mention this aspect. Maybe for your style of photography it is a non issue - but video photographers using the GFX may prefer a quieter focussing system.
I have only just purchased a GFX 100sii - no lenses but the 55 1.7 is on the shortlist!
Subscribed!
Great video. Appreciate the disclaimer at the start but your video is very good. Been using the gfx ii and the x2d now for some time and love them both. Fuji lens are very good. I’d say not quite as good as Hasselblad. But much cheaper !! Love the camera.
What about 40mm 1,4 sigma on gfx? I have a 135mm 1.8 sigma and it gives good results, with a viltrox adapter it focuses better than the fujifilm 120mm macro....
At 13.59, you got my thumbs up and subscription :D But also, a great discussion of the pros and cons of those lenses, really enjoyed the video.
I just picked up the GFX 100 ii and the 55mm 1.7. Crazy combo but definitely takes some getting used to. I'd love to see some videos with the 55mm!
it's such a remarkable lens. you're going to love it.
@@mileswittboyer.photococannot decide which should be my first lens..55 or 32-64…😢
I have 35mm,55 to 110mm zoom,200mm,300mm,500mm mamiya 645 lens with converter to fujifilm gfx camera. 150mm Hasselblad v lens with adapter. The images from the lens are wonderful .
The 55 is on my list, can you tell how fast the AF is in comparison to the 45mm? I‘m a street photographer and I‘m thinking about replacing the 45mm in my camera bag cause the AF is not that fast.
Glad to see you shooting with the Gfx
I ve bought my gfx100 with the 63mm last year but I am still missing the confidence to use it the whole wedding
It absolutely takes some courage. Learning to trust that your eye and your instinct can give you enough heads up that a moment is coming actually goes a long way. I’d say go for it!
Miles, you should have 100K subs for sure! Great info and beautiful images😊
Aye. Thats a generous compliment! Thank you! Just really leaning in and trying to scale this page up.
Would have liked to see more photo examples in this video.
Great perspective. Thank you!
Hey mate, greetings from down under. Loved this summary ! Thank you !!!! I am about to drop coin on a GFX100s. Lens selection is next....... I'm off to find your GFX100s episode!
that's GREAT. Love hearing it!
Had the GFX50R. The GFX50SII. Sold them to get the GFX100S. Love it! I also had the GF50mm and came to the same conclusion that you did. Sold it. Had the GF110, (didn't like the chatter it made.) And the GF35-70mm. Sold them. I agree with you 100% about the GF55mm. I also have the GF30mm. But since I bought the GF55mm, it hasn't been off the camera. Also have the GF45-100mm and the GF100-200mm, but haven't started using them yet. After the GF55mm, nothing else will do!
Awesome! Have you ever tried the gf 110mm? For me it's Fujifilm best lens on the GFX. Will definitely add the 55mm to my kit sooner or later!
We’ve used the 110 since it was released and love it. I mention it in this video as well. It’s a great lens though I’m not a BIG lover of long lenses. It has its use for sure and allows us a little reach when we need it. We carry two of them in the kit!
I have been in the GFX system now for about six months or so and I'm not a full-time wedding photographer. I do a lot of different photography. Everything from landscapes to weddings to Real Estate to products. I do a bit of everything. And I haven't got the 55 1.7 yet but it's definitely on my list. I'm currently saving for the new GFX100s ii and I'm really looking forward to that and then I'll get the 55 1.7.. Oddly I think I just clicked the subscribe button and I'm your 1000 follower congratulations. I was going to start a RUclips channel myself but decided not to as I'm too busy. I don't shoot full-time but I have a well-paid day job and I do have a small Photography business which is going really well and I love Fiji film. I actually used to use the Nikon D850 and I love the feeling of that camera but it wasn't Mirrorless, now that I have a mirrorless camera no going back. Thanks for your video. I'm curious are you interested in the new GFX100s ii
This was fun! I’ve been shooting medium format since my father gave me his WWII twin lens Rollei. Shot Pentax 67 & 645. I do mostly architecture so mirror less opens all kinds of doors.
I also do portraits of family. I disagree with you about the 45. I think it is a great lens and somehow very diff from a 35mm on FF.
Your channel interests me in part bc I have too much gear. I sold the 63 and bought and sold the 80mm.
The 55mm sounds very interesting tho heavy.
For my money the best GF lens is the 110mm. It’s the only lens I use that makes me think I am a great photographer. The rest are great but suggest I’m still in a learning stage.
My least favorite is the gf 100-200. I use the canon EF 100-400. Very heavy. Some vignetting but. SHARP! Way sharp. And focuses to 36 inches.
Again, fun delivery!!! Thanks
I love the 110 as well. The 55 is quite nice too but nothing beats the 110.
The 110 is amazing
Hey Miles! Great video! I'm sorry you don't love the gf 45mm as much. There is something unique about the rendering of that lens, I've been using it for almost 6 years now and I still fall in love every time I use it!
That being said, I'm so ready to try the 55 for wedding work :D
The only time you need or could use high frame rates is for sports. I always set up the shot and shoot with several variations. So I agree, high FPS people tend to spray and pray. Who wants to cull all of that! ;)
Nice commentary about the prime GS lenses. Curious to know if you use any of the Zoom and how you feel about it. As a landscape photographer I use the 20-35 the 35-70 and the 100-200 mostly. The work very well for my purposes and the IQ is superior. I do own the 55 and I fully agree with your feelings. Thanks you for your video.
I have the 100-200 and it has about a half of inch of dust on it. Truth be told I don't love zoom glass mostly because of the way it affects my creativity in shooting, again primarily as a wedding photographer. I see the draw, I just don't love the process. That said - I also have had a lot of problems with the sharpness of that lens. I haven't use the wider zoom glass.
I'd be interested to see how you've gone with the hundred mark 2. I've just got the GFX100s ii .... Really got me thinking about the 63
The 50mm F3.5 is a great lens.
Not "just" for the size.
Love that you think so! I’m sure people have made some killer images with it. Just not me
@@mileswittboyer.photoco How about to challenge yourself creating great images from the lens that you didn't like? Or using only 50mm f3.5 for the whole month? Being creative from limitation is a great things to do :)
Thank you for having the balls to call the GF50 for what it is. A boring lens! I may be the only other person who shares your opinion on this. (Havent read your comments yet, but I'm hoping more people agree).
Fun fact, I started out with the XT2 before going medium format - the GF50 was the ONLY lens I have sold. Ever. Across all systems.
I wanted to love the lens so much. The lens does not have any magic. Well said.
I thought the 45mm where the one? At least its my favourite. Works great on the 50R and the 100.
GFX : Yes its a bit expensive, but compared to Leica, its almost budget friendly ;) Since the 100 II came on the marked, the GFX 100 now can be bought at a more decent price, at least here in Norway .
Back to the point : agree on the Speedmaster 65mm, had it, did not use it much, sold it. 1109 gram with filter and lens caps included.
Thats quite some lug around.
The 45 is a great lens! Just not my favorite
Sold my GF 50mm to get the GF 55mm. The small size and fast AF speed wasn't enough to justify keeping it.
exactly right.
Just one complaint. Not LM. Why Fuji, why?
Where did you get that shirt
Fujifilm gave it to me for Christmas! Totally realize that sounds funny but actually - it’s true. All the Creators and XPhotographers got on this year.
Why so much hate on that little 50, lol? It does have pretty fast AF, and if you stop it down a little it works fine in the studio. But you're right: no real magic. Nothing like those 55 shots at medium distance you showed: interest sparked :-) If you talk about magic, my favorite is the 110. That thing is awesome (but not the most versatile of course). The 30 is a solid lens too, and it always delivers when I need extra wide, but not as magical as that 55. I have a feeling your video is going to cost me money, lol. Subbed though :-)
Haha. Just poking fun at the 50 because it’s small and can’t fight back. I do love the 110 a lot and for portrait work it’s incredible. Love the reach but it doesn’t get as much use out of my camera because I love to get close.
The 55 might be snappier than the 63 but it's still a slower to AF lens compared to som offerings like the 110 or the 45. Really like your review...though... too much belief in magic :)
Hi and What about the 45mm f2.8? Amazing too!:-)
I own it! And sadly it get's very little use. I've always loved the 63mm more in the 2.8 but a lot of that is the fact that I'm not a huge fan of the 35mm (equiv) focal range. That is all personal preference.
The 55mm is all that you say it is and then some. The imgages I'm able to produce make it look like I might actually know what I'm doing. The caveat being I haven't worked up the courage yet to tell my wife that I spent over 10 grand on a new camera system....have a spare room?
Oooo. Danger.
08:13. 09:45 I hope you meant grams and not 746 lb. 😂 that’s the weight of my tourer motorbike. I’m not poking fun at you just thought it would give you a laugh if you didn’t notice the little slip 😅
sorry im late to the party and maybe i missed something but when you said you've never used a Mitakon lens, you're literally holding one
Well 3 mins in, it begins. 55 great 50 bad, humm. 2.8 not blurry enough f2 ideal...
So to be fair - there's a LOT of difference between a 50mm 3.5 and a 55mm 1.7. Those differences are much larger than just the difference in F Stop. The AF speed, size of the front element and the way it collects light, and even the unique perspective of the 55mm makes it simply a much more attractive piece of glass. The easy argument towards shooting faster glass like this isn't in being able to shoot it at 1.7 but rather that it is sharper at 3.5 because it isn't wide open to achieve that aperture. Again, as I stated, not a paid ad by Fujifilm and not compensated in any way. I bought my 55mm and simply love the lens. You're more than welcome to disagree!
@@mileswittboyer.photoco Most lens traits are subjective, but one small correction - the GF 50 3.5 remains the fastest focusing lens from the entire GF lineup, the GF 55 1.7 didn't match those speeds. Otherwise, sure, all valid arguments.
conclusion : old optical formulas got soul .... modern optical formulas are boring ...
Hmmm not sure I’d totally agree there! But I do love a unique field of view. The 63mm is a roughly 50mm equivalent though and is absolute magic, as is the 110 that is essentially an 85mm.
How can we be a hater or troll when you can't even find the time to pronounce the Zhongyi?
It’s a really great question.
Nice sales pitch brah
lol. I mean not really. Considering I don’t mention any affiliate program or incentive and the video isn’t brand backed. There’s nothing I gain for selling Fujifilm gear but I am qualified to have an objective and informed perspective. So - if that was convincing, then so be it.
yes it is. are you or are you not a fuji ambassador?
@@bbones3318 It's sort of painfully clear that you don't understand what that word means. but yes - I am a Fujifilm X-Photographer. Who doesn't receive in kind of compensation from the company unless it's specific to a program, of which - this is not. (nobody get's paid by a brand to just create random videos, especially when they literally CALL OUT in the video that it's not paid)
@@mileswittboyer.photoco lmao "Fujifilm Professional Photographer". Literally no need to say any more. One who doesn't receive compensation but continues to shill them in the hope of getting escalated to main advertising campaigns.
@@bbones3318 so that's cute - i love the trolls. I'll be more clear, I'm on the global team of which there's a very limited list. An X-Photographer endorsed by Tokyo and the US team. The face of quite a few of their campaigns actually such as the release of the GFX100S and the Xt4/X100V. Not a youtube reviewer, an actual member of their team. That said, they don't compensate ANYBODY on their team, not me, or John Branch, or PVR, or Alison Conklin... ANYBODY for youtube videos like this. Instead we make them because - we believe in what we say. A touch of conviction is a great thing for this industry, especially from working photographers at the top of the industry. That said, it does come with the necessary element of dealing with people who clearly don't have much going on other than to pad my comment's section with more numbers. So Bones, will you be signing up for my workshops to learn something, or just rolling in on my youtube comments to act like you already know it all?
7:53 Zhongyi is pronounced as: John gay
Way helpful!
i think it is zhong yi because i believe it is 中一 in chinese. maybe pronounced like john E
