    I found an original framed cheap lithograph in a charity shop here in the UK. It was easy enough to take out of it’s frame and copy it with my printer several times (useful for trying out different effects). I have had a bit of fun adding various ghostly additions without harming the original. 👻🙂

    I think I definitely see both sides, if you’re an artist who wouldn’t want your paintings repainted with ghosts it makes sense to me that you wouldn’t like it. However, if those paintings never sold, they would get thrown away eventually so I completely understand why people do it.

      @@nikkibrown1191 what's the big deal about getting whatever number of likes? I never understood that. Is everyone so starved for attention that they expect other people to give them a sense of meaning or value? You have worth and value because you are alive. Learn to love yourself. Because not everyone else will. Nor should you expect them to. That's normal. Don't let that bother you. What other people think of you should have no bearing on how you think about yourself. They don't know you. If you are a good person you already know that.

    I really don't see anything wrong with adding to a painting (original, print, or mass-produced). If it ended up at a thrift store, it's probably destined for a landfill. By taking it home and adding to it, you're giving it new a life! If I had the skill to add ghosts to a painting in a way that matched the original style, that painting would become part of my Halloween decor for the rest of my life. I don't paint, but I can only hope the art I do make can give others joy after I'm gone, even if its a random person at the thrift store looking for something to DIY. 😊

    The thing is that a lot of the paintings you see people paint over in those thrift store videos are mass produced. I don’t know if it’s still done, but it used to be a thing where certain artists would have a whole studio full or people trained to paint exactly like them. So they’d make an original and then have these artists paints thousands of copies to be sold to people for home decor. And they’d all be signed with the same “company” name so-to-speak.

  • @seanaepley3180
    @seanaepley3180 11 месяцев назад +8

    I haven't seen anyone actually do it to a real painting, only prints from the thrift store. And honestly...anything to keep things out of landfills for a bit longer. People rarely actually purchase art for their home from the thrift store, so by all means, save it and paint on it.

    I crochet and I see crochet/handmade things in goodwill all the time. Sometimes that makes me sad but mostly I’m happy that someone gets to experience it for less and it gets to live on past the trash. I love seeing ppl make bags or clothes out of them too. Same with quilts. It’s so cool to me. So I don’t mind the idea of ghost painting. But there are other ppl who would be livid if their crochet work left their family or ever left the person for which it was intended, let alone if it was cut up and given a new life or unwound for yarn. I’m just not personally that way. I don’t have time to be worried about what ppl are doing with their personal belongings. If I did I wouldn’t hand it over to someone else in the first place. Ya know?

    • @dees3179
      @dees3179 11 месяцев назад +1

      I create nonsense all the time. Art, quilts, crochet etc. when I die I have absolutely no clue what will happen to any of it. There’s no one to leave it to and I can’t imagine anyone would want any of it, but it seems a waste for it all to go straight to landfill without any opportunity for someone to grab it. I also don’t want to have to give up my horde while I’m alive, and due to indifferent health I have less idea than most of likely life expectancy. So I don’t realistically feel like a Swedish death cleaning approach is for me either. There will be no loved one going through my house to be considerate of. This video has made me think though. I’m wondering if I can set up a will which specifies a house clearance company has to try and sell hand made stuff rather than bin it. I wish I could think of someone who could be an executor. I can’t even think who to leave any value in my estate to, the cost of hiring a lawyer to do the work of disposing of assets would wipe out any value and any beneficiary I could think of isn’t up to the job of disposing of assets! Dying is hard work and it might be decades away yet…I need a lie down.

Social workers need stuff like blankets and stuffed animals they can give children that are being placed in care. Having something of your own that you can take with you wherever you are placed means a lot to children in the system. People who go through disasters need stuff to rebuild. Kids who deal with distasters and loose everything love having something they can love and call their own again.

I feel if you do this to make sure you aren't destroying anything truly rare you are fine using thrifted pieces however you feel paintings, clothing, vases, etc. Now paintings ideally you go with reproductions or prints but I know that's not always possible.

    I mean yeah, it is one thing if you completely change the image and add a ghost in the process because then the painting is yours and you were just using a canvas that just so happen to have paint on it or some type of art medium. However, it would probably just easier to use a blank canvas at that point.
    For this trend, you are literally just adding to something that is already created and then calling it your own. It is kind of like those group projects in school where everyone else does the work and you add a slide or two to the presentation and take credit for the full thing.

    A very large part of art nowadays and forever has been using other art as apart of your art. Both in inspiration and use of original works. Especially as part of artist collectives. Art and creativity does not exist in a bubble.
    Painting on the painting that someone else has painted on is just an ongoing artist collaboration.
    Also It does seem like a lot of artwork donated to thrift stores are high school projects or a painting that you weren't that happy with. At least for works that are original. So it's kind of the equivalent of scrap paper.
    But I ask if you find a piece of handmade pottery at a thrift store. Would you feel weird adding to that? A lot of other thrift store items are also pieces of art wirh an original artist idea in mind.

    Just started watching the video and you are talking about painting on top of others art, I understand your point of view if it is an original but at the same time not all painting are originals some canvas are just reproduction and some printed by machines( for my understanding) and if that's the case I don't see a problem. Or even if is an original but it will end up in the trash, if you can change it and use it for decor I think is probably fair. I think is subjective..

    always breaks my heart when people paint over original art or old photos 😭 if its prints then I feel like its fine but i could never paint over someone's art myself

    not saying I don't like it, because I absolutely do. but I feel like the off thing about the dementor thing is no facial features. like normally there would be eyes and a mouth imprint with those type of blobs. idk if it's just me

    Hullo Chloe, I have painted over a thrift store find, I believe that you can create a new artwork giving a painting a new life where before it sat on a shelf unappreciated. Now my sister has been after me to paint some ghosts on a picture she has had for quite some time. I have even purchased some paintings when I was very broke and gessoed the canvas for my own original painting! You can buy a canvas for so cheap! I got a 24x32 inch canvas for $3.00! It had a very poorly executed painting and I used gesso to create a blank for new artwork. This was a wonderful canvas from Michael’s one of their better gallery style canvases. I say do what you feel is necessary for creating your own art! I do enjoy watching your videos and think your an amazing artist and wonderful personality, I am truly glad that you are continuing with your RUclips career! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

    I try to avoid trends that I find as stupid. I feel repainting over an original is stupid. 😊

    You shouldn't really paint over another creators work they've taken time, to make that piece. It'd be just as easy to photocopy it, and give it back to the charity shop

    I hate it and think it's rude to the artist whether they are still alive or not. I feel like if it's a print it's fine but if it's the original painting then no it's rude.

    I think painting over someone else's work for a trend is borderline sleezy. I've seen anther very popular/huge creator sell the work. Personally I find that borderline criminal. He made it extra and cooler - true. But he only did 15% of the overall work. It feels very, very shady to me. This is 100% an opinion, but I deeply respect your choice to use reproductions.

    Unfortunately, I think a lot of them would end up in a landfill. Altering the art, to me, is kinder and more respectful to the piece, the artist, and the planet, than just letting the item go to waste. And im no professional artist, but i feel like a lot of the best and most important things in art (as in inventions and education and science and etc) is reworking previous things. Copying and altering art are also geeat ways to share art and creativity and make it fun and accessible to everyone. I personally really like this trend. But to each their own, obviously nothing wrong if you are uncomfortable painting on another older painting.

    i think art is meant to be enjoyed - if adding lil ghosties is going to bring you happiness, it's fine to enhance an existing piece. like you said, if it's a cheap thing from target or something languishing in a thrift store, i truly don't see the harm in it. and, there's a lot of genuinely ugly art out there 🥴

    My house was the contractors original work buuuut I had a different vision. So I took down a wall and a bunch of trim and changed it. I sew patches to thrifted items or paint or dye them. I don’t really see an issue with painting over original art especially if you’re only just tweaking or adding to it. Fully painting over canvas to start your own painting- like, I get it because it’s economical but that does gut me. Instead of being a collaboration with the original artist you’re just erasing it. I don’t wanna know about it if you’re doing that 😂 keep that horror to yourself

      @@watermelonmint_ personally I'd prefer that to someone thinking they can "improve on my art". If you're poor you're poor and if my painting is in goodwill it can't have been that good anyway.

      @@watermelonmint_😂yes, that's how people learn and recycle "bad" art. Many of the most famous paintings in museums have other full works of art under the art we can see. Art historians and preservationist will use technology to see the older pieces.
