The Root Cause of Uneven Shoulders

  • In this video, I explain the root cause of uneven shoulders. This doesn't start from the shoulders, this is caused from a hiked up hip, twist in the spine, leading to compensations with the shoulders. Once we address the cause, we can then start working in the shoulder area to strengthen its new alignment.

    This was amazing, thank you Quinn! I think it might be important to add that this wouldn't necessarily be the case for everyone though -- I'm assuming typical right-handed folks have their right hip hiked up? I'm not sure how someone who is left-handed would present... Just wanted to mention that I'm right-handed, but I grew up playing soccer and also did gymnastics and long jump for track, with my left leg as my planting leg. This led to my body aligning in almost the opposite way that you're describing here. I still found these exercises extremely helpful knowing that I needed to alter some of the instruction, so I hope others will know that to listen to their own bodies as they might have certain differences as well. Thank you again!

      Yes, this video is definitely speaking to the typical right handed person. That is awesome that you were able to make adjustments or even do this opposite to what I described. And that's a big point with all of this, it's you becoming aware of your body and making the necessary changes. We are all unique on how our fascia holds us together based on our posture, what sports we play and habits etc. Thank you very much for your comment!

      I'm left hand dominant and figured I just need to switch these movements to opposite sides. I'm excited about adding these exercises to my routine!

    Thank you! Do you find that most people have a higher left shoulder due to the pelvis twisted on the left side. My left shoulder is higher. Just wanting to clarify that I follow this video exactly 🙏🏻🙏🏻

      In this scenario I'm explaining if your left shoulder is higher which is typically caused from a pelvic rotation to the right. Then there is a loss of space between your right side of your pelvis and your right lower ribs. This will cause the collapse and your right shoulder will be lower and internally rotated, making your right shoulder appear higher than your left.
      Most people would be in this scenario and that's typically because majority of people are right arm dominant. Let me know if this video helps you out! :)

    For as long as I can remember, my right shoulder has been rolled forward. I notice that my right knee also knobs inward and I have to consciously work to pull my right knee outward when squatting. Do you think they are related? Do you have stretches / exercises for the lower body twist? What is usually the original cause for these issues?

    This was incredibly difficult for me in the triceps portion of it. I have a severe scoliosis so as you can imagine it was fighting hard…but, feels great and I shall continue. Do you think it’s ok to rest the head on the arm when doing that part?

      Yes absolutely you can rest your head on your arm when doing that position and any position really!
