  • Join me and fellow helicopter pilot Dave as we fly from Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ (FFZ) to Sedona, AZ (SEZ) along the Salt and Verde Rivers and through the Verde River Valley. I've cut this hour+ flight into multiple parts, each highlighting a specific area of our flight. In this flight, we begin on the ground at Falcon field, make a Gecko 2 departure across the runway, and hookup with the Salt River, where I drop altitude and point out numerous wild horses in the river. Along the way, you'll hear radio communications with Falcon tower, our in-cockpit conversation, and us working through an intercom issue. At the end of this video, we've just turned up the Verde River and are making a detour to take a closer look at the fountain at Fountain Hills.
Dave is an airline pilot who is working through his helicopter ratings. At the time of this flight, he was a private helicopter pilot; he got his commercial helicopter rating a few weeks later. Dave and I split the cost of this flight; I flew to Sedona and he flew back.

    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
    - My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl) and a GoPro Hero 8 camera (amzn.to/2PBlZ4o). One camera is connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). All cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound by 10 decibels from normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
    - The "cockpit cam" front-facing camera was mounted with my current Instrument Cam set up, which you can learn about in this Behind-the-Scenes video: • Behind the Scenes: Coc... . It's based upon a MyPilotPro Helicopter Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/helico...) modified to get the height I need. The "nosecam" has a proprietary mount.
    - The video was edited on a iMac using Davinci Resolve 16 software. Learn more about it here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/prod...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/
I TRY (really!) to drop cockpit POV videos on Sunday mornings and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. SUBSCRIBE and turn on the notification bell so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. I'm trying hard to deliver good videos and grow my subscriber base.
Some links on my channel are affiliate links, including all links to Amazon (amzn.to/32PLHTD) and MyPilotPro (mypilotpro.com/shop/?wpam_id=13). If you click one of them and buy something, I get a small referral reward. It doesn't cost you anything so I hope you'll shop with one of those links. Thanks.

Deja-vu for me. I had a nice flight along this same route on April 2021, which is the posting date of this video. I was a passenger in an R66 out of Chandler which was arranged by my son for my 71st Birthday. I just accidently discovered your channel this Sunday morning (November 2021) of you cherry drying, and have been binge watching it. It's really great to have someone who is a skilled communicator and author, as well as an experienced helicopter pilot, narrate the videos and do the live stream Q&As. Not a bunch of "um"s, "amazing"s, "awsome"s connecting repetitive blather. Instead you provide clear sentences of factual and informative descriptions of both the area and flying a helicopter.
Thank you for being you, a real down-to-earth person sharing all of this. Best wishes for your endeavors and life.
I have a friend in Mesa who was a Huey pilot in 'Nam. He got shot down a few times and crashed several more. Watching and listening to your cherry drying reminded me of what he told me was far more dangerous than being shot-at: agri-flying. He flew a Hiller to dust mostly cotton, around the outskirts of Phoenix. The larger fields were done by his boss in a plane, he got the smaller, "locked in fields". He never got seriously injured in 'Nam, but after a few crashes crop-dusting he fractured several vertebrae on an "unscheduled, high velocity" landing next to Scottsdale. He had some interesting stories indeed.

Thanks so much for your comments! It's feedback like this that keeps me making videos. Your pilot friend sounds interesting. Does he still fly at all? I'm wondering if I know him. It's not Ed B, is it?

As a fixed wing pilot, I'd love to know what I can do to be better about helicopters flying in my vicinity. It's pretty rare I see a helicopter around, so besides keeping distance from the churning air, I'm not sure what else to do!

You don't have to do anything. And helicopter rotor wash isn't an issue if you're more than 25 to 50 feet away. You shouldn't be that close when flying.
Just understand that helicopters are supposed to avoid the flow of fixed wing traffic. An experienced pilot will likely NOT take off or land on a runway unless instructed to by a tower. The departure from Falcon Field at the beginning of this video is a great example. It requires us to make a 270° climbing turn to cross the runway at 500 feet AGL before crossing the runway UNDER the traffic pattern. In most cases, that's where you'll see us flying: below the airplanes.
