Ok, so this video showed me how the clutch is supposed to work, which it actually turned out to do properly, and put ke on track to figure out how the running gear works, which helped me quickly identify the problem - the bearing on the friction wheel was either seized or iced up. Grasped its hexagonal shaft with a wrench and rocked it back and forth gradually freeing it up until it would rotate freely.
Thanks for posting this - my 1980s Ariens ST824 wouldn't go into gear and I didn't realize how simple the fix would be - I also had to tighten that nut a little so the clutch would engage that disc a little bit more. Prior to doing that, I had virtually no movement in the disc when pulling the clutch handle. After lubing and adjusting the nut, works like a champ!
Snow tonight and wouldn't move. Thanks for the video. Took about 10 minutes to fix!

THANKS! My 10 year-old 824 sticking in gear. You saved me a costly repair.
Thank You so much for the video, it fixed my problem and saved me a trip to the repair shop. Good to know!!
Your advice and tutorial were spot on! Exactly what my snowblower needed. Thanks!
Mind stick and wheels won’t turn! Hoping this works thank you
Here's another video I made with other problems ruclips.net/video/U5U04YwR2JQ/видео.html
Is it possible I might need to apply lubricant more than once? The process itself was simple enough, but gears still won’t engage.
"arens"...
